How to Get Scrap in Permafrost

Scrap in Permafrost can be gathered from metal objects, found in containers, purchased, and obtained by dismantling Metal Junk. If you are short on Scrap for repairing the route into a bunker, first check your stored junk and whether you have access to the Disassembly Bench. This guide explains which sources to look for, how to process your finds, and how the bunker entrance from the older test differs from the story visit to Bunker 21.

Where to find Scrap

You can find ready-to-use Scrap directly, but we recommend not limiting yourself to that resource alone. The game also has a separate item called Metal Junk, which can be dismantled into Scrap. This distinction can easily cause confusion because your backpack may already contain suitable metal parts while the repair requirement still says you do not have enough Scrap. Check both resources before deciding whether another scavenging trip is necessary.

For more information about the current version and launch, see our Permafrost before-you-buy guide. For ready-to-use Scrap, check the following sources:
  • Metal objects and lootable scrap piles. Pre-release data lists small metal objects as yielding 1-3 Scrap, medium objects as yielding 3-5, and some dedicated scrap piles as yielding 2. These categories do not mean every decorative metal object can be dismantled.
  • Military vehicles. Some early vehicle and forest-region loot tables include ready-to-use Scrap. The exact loot depends on the object type.
  • Crates, cabinets, and tool containers. Scrap appears in some of their loot tables, but it is not guaranteed.
  • Traders. Pre-release data lists Scrap in the inventories of Anna and Logan Boyce. Check the actual stock and price in your current version.
Metal Junk can be found in vehicles, trash containers, and piles of rubbish. We recommend checking accessible cars and garbage objects along a familiar route first, then returning to process what you collected. Opening random cabinets indefinitely for the last two pieces can test your patience, but it is not the best farming plan.

How to turn Metal Junk into Scrap

Use the Disassembly Bench to process Metal Junk. In the pre-release build, one unit of Metal Junk becomes two Scrap, and the listed processing time is five seconds. Metal Junk and Scrap remain separate items until you dismantle the junk. Simply carrying metal parts does not let you pay a repair cost that specifically requires Scrap.Access to the bench is connected to Rusty's side quest in House Camp. In the English interface, it is called Disassembler: The First Disassembling. According to the quest log, the Disassembly Bench blueprint is in a box near Rusty. The pre-release quest sequence is:
  • Pick up the Disassembly Bench blueprint near Rusty.
  • Build the bench.
  • Use it to dismantle an item.
  • Return to Rusty and finish the conversation about how the machine works.
  • Claim the reward. In the pre-release build, this is 10 Scrap and 50 currency units.
If you are only missing a small amount of Scrap, this quest is worth checking before another random loot run. It gives you both the processing station and a supply of the resource. Do not dismantle a useful tool just because it can also produce Scrap. Process accumulated Metal Junk first because a working Pickaxe may become important before you can craft a replacement.

How to build up Scrap faster for repairs

Permafrost

First, walk up to the object you need to repair and note the exact requirement. Subtract the Scrap you already have, then calculate how much your stored Metal Junk will produce. For example, if you are short by eight Scrap, four Metal Junk covers the gap at a 1-to-2 conversion rate. This is only an example of the calculation, not the universal cost of entering a bunker. We recommend the following order:
  • Check your storage and backpack. The missing resource may already be there as Metal Junk.
  • Dismantle the available junk. After processing, confirm that you received actual Scrap.
  • Complete Rusty's quest if it is already available and you have not claimed the reward.
  • Buy a small amount from a trader if Scrap is available in the current stock.
  • Save the collected Scrap for the objective. Do not spend it on optional tools or structures before completing the repair.
Do not confuse an item's estimated database value with the purchase price from a specific trader. Also, do not rely on loot immediately respawning in a container you already searched because there is no confirmed respawn timer for that route. Combining scavenging, dismantling, and available quests is more reliable than depending on one lucky container.

How to enter the bunker: the ladder from the older test

Players discussing an earlier test build did describe a bunker ladder repair where progression stopped because they were short on Scrap. However, statements such as "I still need 18" or "I only need four more" refer to the individual player's missing amount, not the total repair cost. Do not treat those numbers as a universal recipe. Check the repair requirement shown on the ladder in your build. If you are playing a version that still uses this obstacle, prepare the listed materials and interact with the repairable object as instructed by the interface. Do not try to replace the intended repair by placing an arbitrary construction ladder nearby. Those are different actions and may not progress the objective. Repair the intended route first, then check the passage beyond it. The exact cost and full layout of this entrance have not been confirmed for the newer build.

How to reach Bunker 21 through the story

In the pre-release data for the newer story chain, Bunker 21 is connected to Jeremiah Crow. After the quest about recovering stolen supplies, Where it all began becomes available and sends you to the place where everything started. Do not treat this as the same objective as the ladder from the older test because the listed quest steps use a different route. The available data does not provide exact entrance coordinates, so follow the current quest marker and Journal. The main objectives are:
  • Talk to Jeremiah Crow and check the active objective.
  • Reach the route leading toward Bunker 21.
  • Pass through the opening specified by the quest to continue farther inside.
  • Find the Lunar Armor blueprint.
  • Return to Jeremiah and tell him what you found.
Do not head toward the bunker unprepared for the cold simply because you solved the Scrap problem. The material may help with repairs, but it does not replace warm equipment and supplies for the trip. Before leaving, check the current quest requirements, clothing condition, and food supply. If the objective in your version differs from the one described here, follow the requirements shown by the live quest. This guide reflects pre-release data rather than an unverified final route.
