Mörkhalla is the main Deep North dungeon in Valheim and the next major progression step after the Winding Tunnels. It is a large vertical dungeon filled with multiple floors, side rooms, dangerous enemies, and valuable loot. For story progression, however, your main goal is to descend all the way to the bottom and destroy the Malicious Ice. In this guide, we'll explain how to unlock Mörkhalla, what to look for inside, and how to trigger a Jotun Invasion.

Where to Find Mörkhalla

While exploring the Deep North, look for enormous tall stone structures. They are easy to spot from a distance and look very different from the usual abandoned settlements. The easiest way to reach the entrance is with the Grappling Hook. Climb to the upper section, break through the wooden barrier, and descend into the structure. At the bottom you'll find a locked gate, which requires an Intricate Key.

How to Open the Gates

Keep the Intricate Key in your inventory and interact with the gate. The key is consumed, after which that entrance remains permanently open.Because of that, don't start an expedition if you've accidentally brought the only key you intended to save for another Mörkhalla. Every new dungeon requires another Intricate Key.

What to Bring Inside

Mörkhalla is large and highly vertical, so prepare for a long expedition. The Grappling Hook and Feather Cape are especially useful. The hook helps you climb back toward upper floors and recover from awkward drops, while the cape protects you from fall damage when a jump goes badly. Also free up as much inventory space as possible. A single Mörkhalla can quickly fill your bags with Ancient Coins, Moulds, gemstones, crafting materials, and resources from earlier biomes.

Which Enemies Appear in Mörkhalla

Krigen are among the main enemies inside. They become especially dangerous in groups in the lower sections, so don't jump into the middle of a room before checking how many enemies are waiting below.
Hexen attack from range and move around aggressively, making it easier to isolate and deal with them separately whenever possible. You'll also encounter Shapeless Pulp, hostile blobs that split into Tiny Pulp when killed.Another enemy type is the Captive Fuling. These are not the same weak Fulings you may remember from the Plains. The Mörkhalla versions are tuned for late-game Deep North content and can hit much harder.

What to Look for in Mörkhalla

Search chests, weapon racks, and side rooms carefully. Mörkhalla can contain Moulds for new equipment, Ancient Coins, valuable gemstones, Black Cores, and Idols used at the Forge of Potential.
Pay particular attention to weapon racks. Destroying them can drop Moulds that you'll later need to craft Deep North weapons and equipment. At the same time, don't force yourself to clear the entire dungeon in a single run. Mörkhalla contains plenty of loot, so if your inventory fills up, it's better to return home, unload everything, and continue exploring later.

How to Find the Malicious Ice

For the main progression objective, keep descending deeper through Mörkhalla. The Malicious Ice is located in the lowest section of the dungeon.Clear the surrounding area before destroying it. Fighting local enemies while simultaneously trying to break the objective is unnecessarily awkward.Once the Malicious Ice is destroyed, the game displays a message announcing the start of a Jotun Invasion.

What to Do Next

Open the Valheim world map. A new event marker will appear, and it can be very far from your current island or even located in a completely different biome.Don't immediately rush out of Mörkhalla. If there are unexplored chests or rooms nearby, finish collecting the remaining loot first. After that, return to your portal and plan a route toward the Jotun Invasion. Completing the invasion is the next major step in Deep North progression.
