Bosses in Valheim are more than just especially powerful enemies. They are the main milestones of progression. Nearly every victory opens the next stage of the game, unlocking new tools, resources, biomes, or mechanics. Brute force isn't always enough, either. Bonemass barely takes damage from many familiar weapons, Moder forces you to fight at range, The Queen constantly summons additional enemies, and the final boss has three separate phases.
Valheim 1.0 has eight main bosses: Eikthyr, The Elder, Bonemass, Moder, Yagluth, The Queen, Fader, and Kall Fimbulbringer. In this guide, we'll explain how to find and summon each boss, what gear to prepare, and what to do during the fight itself.
How to Defeat Eikthyr
Eikthyr is the first boss in Valheim and serves as an introduction to the game's core combat system. His altar is located in the Meadows, and you can reveal its location almost immediately after entering the world by interacting with the Vegvisir near the Sacrificial Stones. You'll need two Deer trophies to summon him. Place them on your hotbar and use them at the Mystical altar.Image unavailable
How to Prepare for the Fight
You don't need any particularly advanced gear for Eikthyr. Leather armor, a decent supply of food, and a Flint spear are more than enough. If you'd rather keep your distance, bring a Crude bow and a few dozen Fire arrows or Flinthead arrows. The boss has only three main attacks. He lowers his head before striking with his antlers, rears slightly before firing a ranged lightning attack, and stands on his hind legs before unleashing a powerful electrical blast around himself.
How to Fight Eikthyr
The main rule here is not to get greedy. Wait for an attack, dodge it or block it with a shield, land a few hits, then back away again. An even easier option is to maintain your distance and keep shooting with a bow. Two of Eikthyr's attacks become almost irrelevant this way, while his lightning attack can be avoided simply by moving to the side. After the fight, collect the Hard antlers. They are used to craft your first pickaxe, which unlocks Copper and Tin mining in the Black Forest.
How to Defeat The Elder
The Elder is found in the Black Forest. His location is revealed after interacting with the appropriate Vegvisir, which can usually be found inside Burial Chambers and near certain structures. You'll need three Ancient seeds to summon him. These can be obtained from Greydwarf Brutes and by destroying Greydwarf nests.Image unavailable
How to Prepare for the Fight
Bronze weapons, a Finewood bow, and Fire arrows are all good choices. The Elder is particularly dangerous at range, so having plenty of stamina is often more useful than a few extra points of health. Take a good look around the arena before starting the fight. The four enormous pillars around the altar are not just decoration. They provide excellent cover.
How to Defeat The Elder
The boss can summon roots, stomp the ground around himself, and fire a long barrage of vines toward the player. The vines are by far his most dangerous attack. Don't try to tank them with a shield or roll through the entire barrage. Simply keep one of the stone pillars between yourself and The Elder. When the boss summons roots, move to another pillar and keep firing Fire arrows. Once the area is safe again, you can close the distance and attack with a sword or spear.
Fun fact:
the fight becomes a fairly simple loop: move in, land a few hits, wait out the dangerous ability behind a pillar, then repeat.
After defeating him, you'll receive the Swamp key, which is required to explore Sunken Crypts.
How to Defeat Bonemass
Bonemass is found in the Swamps. The easiest places to find Vegvisirs that reveal the boss location are inside Sunken Crypts. You'll need ten Withered bones to summon him, and these can also be found in the local dungeons.Image unavailable
How to Prepare for the Fight
This is the first boss where damage type really matters. Bonemass is weak to Blunt damage, so leave your sword at home and bring a good mace instead. Poison resistance mead is also essential. Without it, getting caught in one of the boss's poison clouds can end the fight very quickly. Before summoning him, use a Hoe to level the ground around the altar. The last thing you want during the fight is to keep running through deep swamp water.
How to Defeat Bonemass
The boss has three main attacks. He swings his arm in melee range, releases a huge poison cloud around himself, and throws a glob that spawns regular enemies. Kill the summoned creatures as soon as possible. If you let them build up, keeping track of the boss, skeletons, and poison at the same time becomes much harder. When Bonemass prepares to release the cloud, simply move away. His melee attack, on the other hand, gives you an excellent opening to land several hits with your mace.Repeat this cycle and don't keep attacking inside the poison just to squeeze in one extra combo. The fight isn't particularly fast, but with Poison resistance and the right damage type it becomes very predictable.
How to Defeat Moder
Moder is the first boss who spends much of the fight in the air. Her altar is located in the Mountains, and you'll need to bring three Dragon eggs to summon her. Make sure you have Frost resistance before starting the fight. The easiest options are a Wolf cape or Frost resistance mead.Image unavailable
How to Prepare for the Fight
Bring a good bow and a large supply of arrows. Draugr fang with Poison arrows or Obsidian arrows works well. A Silver sword is a solid melee option. You should also level the arena beforehand and, if you want, use a Hoe to raise several pillars of earth. The boss cannot destroy them, making them excellent cover from her ice projectiles.
How to Defeat Moder
While the dragon is airborne, shoot her with your bow and hide behind the raised earth whenever she fires a volley of ice projectiles. It's also a good idea to destroy the crystals left behind by the attack so they don't obstruct your movement. On the ground, Moder can bite, swipe with her claws, and use frost breath. All of these attacks have fairly clear tells, giving you time to dodge, move in, and land several hits. If you're not confident in melee, don't take the risk. Stay at range and keep using your bow even after she lands. The fight will take longer, but it will also be much safer.
How to Defeat Yagluth
Yagluth is found in the Plains. To summon him, collect five Fuling totems and place them at his altar. Make sure to prepare Fire resistance barley wine before the fight. Most of Yagluth's dangerous attacks deal Fire damage, so this effect makes the encounter much easier.Image unavailable
How to Prepare for the Fight
A full set of Padded armor works well, along with a weapon that deals strong Physical or Spirit damage. The Silver sword remains an excellent option even at this stage. Don't destroy the enormous stone fingers around the altar. You'll want to use them as cover.
How to Defeat Yagluth
Watch the boss's hand movements. When Yagluth raises his left hand, a meteor shower is about to begin. Move away immediately and use the stone pillars for cover. Raising his right hand signals a powerful ground slam that leaves the area around him burning for a while. This creates one of the best openings for an attack. With Fire resistance active, you can endure some of the lingering damage and still land several hits. His third ability is fire breath. You don't need to run far from it, just move to the side. The biggest mistake in this fight is constantly chasing the boss. Wait for a favorable attack, deal your damage, then create distance again before the next meteor shower.
How to Defeat The Queen
The Queen is found inside the Infested Citadel in the Mistlands. To enter it for the first time, you'll need to explore Infested Mines and collect nine Sealbreaker fragments. This is a considerably longer fight than the previous ones, so it's a good idea to build a small base with a Portal right outside the entrance. You can leave the arena, recover, repair your weapons, and then continue the fight.Image unavailable
How to Prepare for the Fight
Bring a Wisp light, Poison resistance mead, healing mead, and stamina-restoring mead. The Feather cape significantly reduces the risk of dying from a fall in the multi-level arena. You should also bring something that can deal with large groups of small enemies. Ooze bombs or weapons with area-of-effect damage work particularly well.
How to Defeat The Queen
In melee, The Queen uses several claw attacks, a bite, a lunge, and powerful ground attacks. She can also fire projectiles that spawn Seeker broods, burrow and reposition around the arena, and summon adult Seekers. The most important rule is to control the additional enemies immediately. If you ignore them for several minutes, the arena will quickly fill up and finding a safe opening to attack the boss becomes much harder. It's best to attack The Queen in short bursts. Two-handed weapons can actually be more comfortable here than fast one-handed options because the boss's constant attacks leave almost no time for long combos anyway. A magic build makes the fight considerably easier. Keep your protective barrier active, maintain your distance, and use staffs with area-of-effect damage while clearing the summoned enemies at the same time.
How to Defeat Fader
Fader is the boss of the Ashlands and one of the toughest enemies in Valheim. Simply equipping good armor and trying to out-damage him won't work. The fight is built around constant movement, dodging, and short attack windows. To summon the boss, you'll need to explore Charred Fortresses, collect the required items, and use them at his altar.Image unavailable
How to Prepare for the Fight
For melee, use fully upgraded Ashlands-tier armor and a weapon with high damage. Fast axes work especially well because many of the boss's attacks leave only a short window for a proper combo. If you prefer magic, don't rely on Fire damage. Fader is immune to Fire, so the Staff of Frost or another weapon that doesn't depend on that element is a much better choice. You should also bring:
Lingering stamina mead;
Tasty mead;
Healing mead;
Good Health and Stamina food.
Stamina management is especially important here. Fader has a huge amount of health, so the fight lasts much longer than the opening minutes might suggest.
What Attacks Does Fader Use?
At close range, the boss bites, swipes with his claws, and performs a spinning attack. These moves are relatively predictable on their own. You can block them or wait them out with dodge rolls, then quickly land a few hits. His special abilities are much more dangerous. Fader uses fire breath, calls down meteors, and creates a ring of fire around the player. His most dangerous attack, however, begins when he drags a paw across the ground and slams it down. Small patches of green flame appear beneath the player. At first they deal almost no damage, but after a short delay enormous spikes erupt from the ground.
How to Dodge the Fissure Attack
As soon as you see green flames beneath your feet, start moving away from the boss and follow a wide arc. You don't need to sprint constantly. The spikes appear after a short delay and track your position, so ordinary movement is often enough. This lets you save stamina for your next approach.Don't rush back toward Fader as soon as the final spikes appear. Wait until the fire on the ground starts fading, then close the distance. Trying to return to the boss too quickly is one of the easiest ways to take unnecessary damage.
How to Attack Fader in Melee
The basic strategy is straightforward: stay relatively close to the boss, dodge his regular attacks, and use every safe opening for a short burst of damage. Don't insist on finishing a full combo. If you see Fader starting another animation, stop attacking immediately and prepare to dodge. When a meteor shower begins, a fissure appears, or the ground around the boss catches fire, back away and recover stamina. Once the dangerous area disappears, move in again.Tasty mead is especially useful in these situations. Drink it after spending most of your stamina to recover faster and extend your next attack window.
What to Do With Summoned Charred
After Fader loses roughly half his health, he starts summoning green Charred. You don't need to immediately switch targets every time one appears. Keep moving around the boss and continue watching his attacks. The spikes from his fissures can damage the summoned enemies, so Fader will effectively do some of the work for you. Deal with the Charred only when they start interfering with your movement or surrounding you.
How to Defeat Fader With Magic
A magic build lets you approach the fight much more safely. Because Fader is immune to Fire, the Staff of Frost is a better primary weapon. Keep your distance, constantly move around the boss, and gradually wear down his health with ranged attacks. The main rule remains the same: the moment you see green flames beneath your feet, stop attacking and move away.Don't keep firing in the hope that you can survive the spikes. Fader has a huge health pool, so keeping your character alive and calmly resuming the fight after the ability ends is far more important. If you're using other magic staffs, pay attention to the boss's resistances and don't rely on Fire damage as your main source of DPS.
Which Strategy Is Easier?
Melee can kill Fader fairly quickly, especially with strong axes, but this approach requires you to read his animations confidently. A magic setup built around the Staff of Frost takes longer, but it allows you to fight from a safer distance and get hit by his regular attacks much less often. The core principle is the same either way: don't try to outlast the boss with a huge health pool. Attack in short bursts, retreat during meteor showers and fissures, recover your stamina, and only return once the ground is safe again.
