Electronic Arts has announced that DICE and Respawn Entertainment are working together on a new shooter set in the Star Wars universe. The publisher has yet to reveal its title or any details, but according to Variety, the project is Star Wars: Battlefront III. The announcement came on the same day EA shut down BioWare and canceled one of its The Sims projects.Rumors about a third Battlefront game had been building all week. First, Joe Brammer, producer of the indie hit Wardogs and head of Bulkhead, said on X that Lucasfilm was working with Respawn and DICE. Then an internal EA memo to employees officially confirmed that the two studios were collaborating on a project. The publisher's leadership explained that the success of Battlefield 6 had provided valuable lessons. EA intends to apply what it learned about launching and providing long-term support for an online shooter across its entire action game portfolio, not just Battlefield.
DICE developed both Battlefront games released in 2015 and 2017, while its Battlefield 6 recently became another hit for the publisher. Respawn, meanwhile, has established a strong track record with the Lucasfilm license thanks to two successful Star Wars Jedi games and the tactical Star Wars Zero Company. On the same day, EA closed BioWare, the studio behind Mass Effect, KOTOR, and Baldur's Gate, and canceled a project in The Sims series. Against that backdrop, the focus on Battlefront III and Apex Legends looks less like a simple release strategy and more like a shift of resources toward proven franchises. The publisher has not announced any platforms or release window.
