Bohemia Interactive has released Badlands, the largest expansion in DayZ history. The action moves to the desert province of Nasdara, a 267-square-kilometer region west of Chernarus that borders Takistan, and the biggest official map the game has ever had. The expansion launched on October 15 for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. The global 1.30 update arrived alongside it.Nasdara changes the very formula of survival. Instead of familiar forests and European villages, players face scorching sunlight, abandoned Middle Eastern-style towns, Soviet military bases, and ruined oil infrastructure. The infected are no longer the only enemy. The climate itself is dangerous. Heat can cause dehydration and heatstroke, while dust storms bring the risk of silicosis, a lung disease, and reduce visibility. Water has to be found in the few surviving wells and tanks, while new animal species roam the map. According to the developers, they created four times as many unique assets for the new map as they did for last year's snowy Frostline.Badlands' defining mechanic is rebuilding. Ruined wells, houses, tunnel entrances, and bunkers can be repaired to gain access to resources and new areas. The developers are also putting greater emphasis on playing together, giving survivors tools to form factions that can take control of these devastated lands. As a bonus, Update 1.30 adds DayZ's first-ever two-wheeled motorcycles, new weapons, Morse code, and visual upgrades for certain assets.Badlands isn't the only development for the franchise. Back in June, Bohemia Interactive announced a Nintendo Switch 2 version of DayZ, while a full-fledged DayZ 2 remains speculation rather than an official announcement. That leaves plenty of room for Nasdara to be followed by more experiments in the original game.
