At Tokyo Game Show, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy shared a detail in an interview with Bloomberg that quickly spread across the gaming community: Grand Theft Auto VI multiplayer is expected to launch in 2027.According to Clancy, Twitch has been in regular contact with Rockstar and is helping the studio think through its strategy for bringing streamers into the launch of the new game. He expects two major waves of viewer interest: the first when the single-player game launches, and an even bigger one when multiplayer arrives. This is not an anonymous leak or a blogger's guess. It comes from the head of a platform whose business is directly affected by major game releases. GTA Online has generated enormous Twitch viewership for more than a decade, and moving that audience over to the sixth installment is a major business priority for the streaming platform.Image unavailableAt the same time, neither Rockstar's official website nor its press materials currently mention a multiplayer mode. GTA VI is described exclusively as a single-player experience. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, speaking to investors that same day, said the company intends to continue supporting the existing GTA Online. Zelnick avoided giving a direct answer about a new online mode, while Clancy referred to multiplayer arriving next year as something he expects to happen. Still, it is important to remember that Clancy represents Twitch, not Rockstar. His comments may reflect information discussed during conversations with the studio, but they are not an official announcement.Rockstar has used both approaches when launching online modes in the past. When GTA V launched in 2013, GTA Online became available just two weeks later. Red Dead Online, meanwhile, entered beta about a month after Red Dead Redemption 2's console release, but did not leave beta until May 2019, roughly seven months after launch. For Twitch, a GTA 6 multiplayer launch could be comparable in scale to the release of the game itself: dormant viewers returning, more hours watched, and an influx of new content creators. For Rockstar, multiplayer represents a long-term live-service model built around microtransactions, one that has generated revenue through GTA Online for more than a decade. In other words, there is every reason to prepare the online component carefully before launch.Until Rockstar confirms it officially, 2027 remains an encouraging but unofficial window. The single-player campaign launches on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
