In Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2, Malum Caedo and Nyra Veyrath can build very different arsenals. The Space Marine relies on heavy firepower, while the Sister of Battle favors bolters, flamers, and melta weapons. In this guide, we'll cover every weapon available to both characters, help you choose the best guns for crowds and tough enemies, and explain where to find your first weapons and some useful hidden caches.

How the Arsenal Works in Boltgun 2

You choose your character before starting the campaign, and that decision determines which weapons you can use. Malum and Nyra each have nine ranged weapons, plus a Chainsword and Power Sword, respectively, for melee combat. Both can wield the Meltagun and Heavy Bolter, but most of their arsenals are different. There's no point looking for Malum's Shotgun in the Sister of Battle's inventory. She has her own ways of teaching heretics that they picked the wrong distance for a fight. You pick up weapons as you progress through the levels. Some are right along the main route, while others are worth checking a side room or hidden cache for. The campaign branches, so pay attention to the mission name instead of thinking of it as the sixth level. Two playthroughs can take you to entirely different places after a branching choice. Be especially thorough when you find ammunition for a weapon you don't have yet, but don't assume that means the gun itself is hidden just around the next corner. One other important change from the first game is that the visible numerical weapon Strength and enemy Toughness ratings are gone. It's easier to choose a weapon based on range, target size, and how it attacks. To start with, you only need a simple setup: one gun for ordinary firefights, one for crowds, and one for large enemies. Get used to switching between them before your favorite Boltgun runs completely dry.

All Malum Caedo Weapons

Boltgun - Your Main Weapon for Regular Firefights

You get the Boltgun near the start of the campaign. It's a convenient choice against enemies at medium range. You can move around the arena, pick off ranged attackers, and avoid having to close in with your sword for every cultist. We recommend using it as your main weapon between tougher encounters. When a large enemy is soaking up bolt after bolt, switch to something more suitable. The Emperor's patience may be infinite, but Malum's ammunition certainly isn't.

Shotgun - For Enemies That Get Too Close

Use the Shotgun in tight spaces and against enemies that close the distance quickly. Let the target get into effective range, fire, and move before shooting again. We wouldn't recommend trying to hit an enemy across a huge hall with buckshot. Save the Boltgun or an energy weapon for distant targets instead. But if trouble is already waiting on the other side of a doorway, the Shotgun saves you from having to make a long argument.

Plasma Gun - For Dangerous Single Targets

Save the Plasma Gun for tough enemies that would take too many bursts from conventional weapons. Step out of cover, fire carefully aimed shots, and reposition if enemies start moving around your flanks. Watch the heat buildup, as continuous fire can leave Malum unable to respond at the worst possible moment. You can switch to another gun during the pause and keep the attack going.

Frag Cannon - For Groups of Enemies

The Frag Cannon works like a grenade launcher. Pull it out when several enemies are clustered around an entrance or moving in a tight group. An explosion is much more useful here than a shot at a lone cultist. We recommend choosing a good firing position in advance and falling back toward it when a large wave approaches. Chasing a single fast enemy with a grenade launcher is usually less convenient than switching to the Boltgun.

Meltagun - A Powerful Close-Range Attack

The Meltagun is handy when you need to burn through a tough target up close. For Malum, it's another reason to close the distance, but it's better to move in after the enemy has attacked and you have an opening to retaliate. If other shooters are nearby, choose a position where they won't have a free shot at your back. The weapon's raw power doesn't remove the need to escape a crowd. You can find one in Dilapidated Prison, near the purple door. We'll cover the route to this cache below. It's easy to miss if you're focused solely on the marker for your next objective.

Heavy Bolter - For Sustained Fire

The Heavy Bolter is useful when you have multiple targets ahead and enough room to shoot. Use it in open arenas and against advancing groups you can keep in front of you. First, eliminate enemies blocking your escape route, then turn your fire on the rest. If they're spread across different floors, don't stand in the middle of a hall just to keep firing one long burst. Change position as the direction of the attack changes.

Volkite Caliver - For Keeping a Beam on Target

The Volkite Caliver hits enemies with a focused energy beam. It's useful when you have a clear view of your target and can keep the beam aimed at it while moving around the arena. Deal with smaller enemies that might disrupt your aim before opening fire. If a large enemy ducks behind cover, move around it or pick another target instead of continuing to burn a hole in the wall.

Missile Launcher - For Tough Fights and Groups

The Missile Launcher comes in handy when a regular firefight is dragging on or several dangerous enemies are standing close together. We recommend using it against large targets and clusters of enemies, leaving weaker foes to your Boltgun. Before firing, make sure there isn't an obstacle right in front of Malum. In a cramped room, it's better to clear your line of fire than try to squeeze a missile past a doorframe. There's a Missile Launcher cache in Breaking the Ice, inside the icy canyon caves. Nyra can obtain a Heavy Flamer at the same location. We'll explain how to reach the cache below.

Grav-Cannon - For Heavy Targets and Crowd Control

The Grav-Cannon doesn't just deal damage. It can also affect enemy positioning. Use it when you need to bring down a dangerous opponent and prevent them from freely forcing you into melee range. Make sure you have room to maneuver beforehand. An unusual attack won't save Malum if he's already trapped in a corner. Ordinary weapons will do fine against a single weak enemy, so save the charge for a more serious encounter.

Chainsword - For Closing the Gap and Saving Ammo

The Chainsword is available from the beginning and remains useful even after you've acquired heavier weapons. Its attack lets Malum rush toward a chosen enemy. Use it to reach an appropriate target quickly, then assess what's happening around you. We recommend cutting down weaker enemies this way when the others can't freely shoot at Malum. Leaping across the whole arena toward a cultist standing between two heavy fighters is a questionable way to save a couple of bolt rounds.

All Nyra Veyrath Weapons

Bolt Pistol - For Early Encounters and Accurate Shots

The Bolt Pistol is Nyra's first ranged weapon. Use it against individual targets and enemies that are awkward to reach with a sword or flamer. It suits her mobile playstyle: move, aim, shoot, and slip out of the firing line again. Once you've found heavier weapons, keep the pistol for easier encounters so you don't waste powerful ammunition unnecessarily.

Condemnor Stakethrower - For Precision Attacks

The Condemnor Stakethrower helps you deal a quick hit to a chosen target. Bring it out when you need to eliminate a dangerous shooter separately from the crowd or finish an enemy after a sword thrust. Rather than firing continuously, keep a comfortable distance and pick your moment to strike. If Nyra is already surrounded, make some space first and return to precise shots afterward. The Machine Spirit upgrade is particularly useful here. With it, every shot from the crossbow becomes blessed for the rest of the level. If you find this bonus before a difficult section, you can apply it to this weapon. Just make sure you're holding the crossbow when you pick it up.

Flamer - For Crowds and Narrow Passages

The Flamer is useful against groups of weaker enemies. Fall back toward a passage, wait for the enemies to approach, and sweep the flames across the advancing crowd before they can get around Nyra on both sides. We recommend using it when you're the one controlling the engagement distance. If a shooter is standing on a distant balcony, pull out something with better range instead of trying to reach them with fire.

Storm Bolter - For Automatic Fire

The Storm Bolter gives Nyra a useful option for sustained shooting. Use it when individual pistol shots aren't enough but moving in with the Flamer would be too dangerous. Shoot while moving between cover and switch to the next target after securing a kill. Against particularly tough enemies, pull out your plasma or melta weapon and save the bolt rounds for the rest.

Meltagun - For Large Enemies

Nyra can also use the Meltagun. It's a powerful option against tough targets, but it's best used alongside her mobility. Move into a good position, deal damage, and dodge the counterattack. There's no need to stand right in front of an enemy and see who stops firing first. If the area gets too crowded, use Fervent Slide to put some distance between you and the attackers.

Heavy Bolter - For Open Arenas

Nyra also has access to the Heavy Bolter. Use it when there are plenty of visible enemies and you can keep firing without moving right up to them. Combine sustained fire with repositioning, and escape through the open side of the arena if enemies try to surround you. We recommend dealing with fast enemies that disrupt your aim first, then focusing on everyone else.

Plasma Pistol - Against Armored Enemies

The Plasma Pistol is worth keeping for dangerous opponents, including Helbrutes and other large enemies. An ordinary pistol is enough for a lone cultist, so save your plasma ammunition for fights where the extra power matters. Pick your target, fire aimed shots, and don't let the smaller enemies sneak around your flank. It's one of Nyra's most useful options in tough encounters.

Multi-Melta - Against the Toughest Enemies

We recommend using the Multi-Melta against large, durable targets. Once you've found it, don't mentally consign every other weapon to storage. Ordinary enemies still aren't worth spending your most powerful shots on. First, find a position where you can attack and retreat, then open fire. If your target takes cover or moves, adjust your aim before spending more ammunition.

Heavy Flamer - For Clearing Groups

The Heavy Flamer is useful when regular fire isn't enough and you want a lot more of it. Use it against tightly packed enemies, keeping them in front of you while moving along the open edge of the arena. Pay attention to your surroundings. The stream of flame looks spectacular, but it also blocks part of your view. Don't keep burning a target that's already dead while new enemies close in on Nyra. One cache containing this weapon is located in Breaking the Ice, near the end of the canyon route. Malum receives a Missile Launcher at the same spot.

Power Sword - For Lunges and Making Space

The Power Sword is available to Nyra from the start of the campaign. Use normal strikes against weaker enemies and hold the attack button to prepare a lunge. After landing a hit, you can retreat and finish the target with a shot rather than staying nearby for a counterattack. Fervent Slide also works with her sword attacks, so use it to break through a suitable opening and get out of danger.

Where to Find Weapons: Early Pickups and Useful Secrets

Boltgun or Bolt Pistol in Shattered Station

Your first ranged weapon lies along the main route of the opening mission. After the melee tutorial, activate the green panel, head through the damaged corridors, and cross the gap. Malum picks up a Boltgun, while Nyra gets a Bolt Pistol. Soon afterward, you'll need to shoot a switch across another gap, so the new weapon comes in handy almost immediately. This is a regular pickup along the route, not a reward for finding a secret or Purity Seal. If you reach the distant switch without a gun, retrace your steps and check the pickup location. There's no need to hunt for a hidden passage to get your first Boltgun.

Meltagun in Dilapidated Prison

Reach the purple door, but inspect the hall and the room to the left before opening it. You'll find machinery with large green pipes, concealing the pickup behind it. Climb onto the pipes, make your way across the machinery, and drop into the enclosed area to collect the weapon. This cache is the level's third secret.Don't leave as soon as you collect the key. The main objective points toward the door, but the side area you need is still nearby. Once you've explored it, return to the purple lock and continue through the mission. There is also a Machine Spirit on the far side of the door. Use the crates to climb onto the pipes above the room.

Missile Launcher or Heavy Flamer in Breaking the Ice

This level belongs to the frozen branch of the campaign. Near the end, after the rooms and battles inside the snowy base, you'll reach a canyon with caves that release packs of hounds. Look into the openings on the left instead of just following the route forward. The cache is in the third cave on the left in this section.Head all the way inside. Malum receives a Missile Launcher, while Nyra gets a Heavy Flamer. It's easy to miss this pickup in the middle of a fight, so take a moment to check the caves once you've dealt with the nearest enemies. If you chose another campaign branch, this level won't appear on your current route. Don't go hunting for an icy canyon in a flooded area.

Best Weapons for Malum Caedo

For your first playthrough, we recommend relying on the Boltgun, Shotgun, and Plasma Gun, then adding heavier weapons as you find them. These three cover straightforward situations: ordinary firefights, enemies at close range, and tough single targets. It's easier to get used to switching between them than trying to finish the whole game with one Boltgun or memorizing every weapon's quirks right away. From there, pick a weapon to suit the fight:
  • Regular enemies at medium range - Boltgun.
  • Tight rooms and approaching enemies - Shotgun.
  • Dense crowds - Frag Cannon or Missile Launcher.
  • Sustained fire - Heavy Bolter.
  • Large targets - Plasma Gun, Meltagun, or Grav-Cannon, depending on the available range.
  • Weak enemies you can reach safely - Chainsword.

Best Weapons for Nyra Veyrath

A good foundation for Nyra is the Bolt Pistol, Condemnor Stakethrower, and Flamer. Keep the pistol for easy individual targets, the crossbow for precise attacks, and the Flamer for crowds. Once you find the Plasma Pistol and melta weapons, use those against tougher enemies rather than burning all your fuel on a single heavily armored foe. Here's what we recommend for each situation:
  • Individual weak enemies - Bolt Pistol or Power Sword.
  • Precision damage - Condemnor Stakethrower, especially with a Machine Spirit upgrade.
  • Regular close-range crowds - Flamer.
  • Large groups - Heavy Flamer, provided they're within range.
  • Automatic fire in an arena - Storm Bolter or Heavy Bolter.
  • Armored and large enemies - Plasma Pistol, Meltagun, or Multi-Melta.

Frag Grenades and Melta Bombs: When to Use Them

Malum has Frag Grenades, while Nyra has Melta Bombs. The former are useful against groups of ordinary enemies. We recommend saving the latter for dangerous groups or large targets. Holding the throw button lets you line up a throw while displaying its trajectory and slowing time. This makes it easier to hit your intended target instead of the nearest pillar.Nyra can detonate a Melta Bomb in midair by pressing the throw button again. Use this when the enemies are already close to it and you don't want to wait for the usual detonation. Pick a suitable target before preparing the throw. Standing in the middle of an arena under fire just to line up the perfect trajectory is still a bad idea.

How to Upgrade Weapons with a Machine Spirit

A Machine Spirit upgrades the weapon you're holding when you pick it up. So don't run toward the bonus with whichever gun happens to be equipped. Decide in advance what you'll use for the rest of the level. The effects vary depending on the weapon, and the upgrade lasts until the end of the mission. It's worth making a deliberate choice before a difficult arena fight.Nyra's crossbow is a particularly useful choice, as its shots become blessed. For Malum, we recommend choosing a weapon with sufficient ammunition and suitable targets ahead. Even a powerful upgrade won't help if you've barely got enough ammo to fire it.

Can You Unlock All Weapons Right Away?

Yes. The accessibility settings include an unlock all weapons option. This gives you access to your arsenal without collecting weapons normally throughout the levels. It's handy if you want to try different guns and find your favorites. You can leave the setting off for a first playthrough and discover weapons as you progress, then turn it on when you're ready to experiment. The weapon selection is still tied to your chosen character, though. To compare Malum and Nyra's full arsenals, start a campaign with each of them. The easiest approach is to test several guns in the same fight. You'll quickly learn which ones feel best for picking off shooters, holding back crowds, and bringing down tough enemies.
