How to Rename an Item

You don't need a Name Tag to give an item a custom name. All you need is an Anvil. Anvils can also be used when applying enchantments to weapons and armor. To craft an Anvil, you'll need three Blocks of Iron and four Iron Ingots. Arrange them in a Crafting Table as shown below.

Place any item in the Anvil and enter its new name in the field at the top.

Rename

Once you've crafted an Anvil, you can use it to rename your tools and weapons. You can also rename almost any other item, including Name Tags, which can then be used to give custom names to your animals.
