Herm is one of the first merchants you meet in Graveyard Keeper 2. Most of his quests are tied to developing your farm: first you'll need to grow Wheat, then track down a missing fishing rod and catch a couple of fish, and later help the merchant obtain Lace for another shop upgrade. In this guide, we'll cover all of Herm's quests and explain the quickest ways to meet some of the requirements that can be troublesome early in the game.

Supply and Demand

You meet Herm shortly after speaking with the head of the village. Go to his shop and discuss the settlement's supplies. This opens two objectives at once: Herm asks you to show him the results of local farming and also mentions a fishing rod he once lent to the twins. It is best to buy 16-20 Wheat Seeds from him right away and plant them as soon as possible. While the crop is growing, work on the second task or other early quests so you do not have to wait around for the Wheat to mature later.

Planted and Delivered

Despite the wording of the quest, Herm does not need seeds. He wants 5 Wheat. The 16-20 seeds mentioned in the journal are simply a recommended supply for four or five plantings. Return to the garden near your house and, if Larry starts talking about the old garden beds and other work areas, let the conversation play out. You do not need to repair the bridge leading to the vineyard for this quest.First, unlock the Gardening Technology for 5 green tech points. Then use the building table in the garden to place a regular Garden Bed. The bed itself does not require any materials, but you still need to dig it with a Shovel, which requires Farming Mastery 2.

How to Get Farming Mastery 2

If the game will not let you prepare the Garden Bed, the problem is almost certainly your Mastery level. Take the Rusty Shovel from the supply chest near the graveyard and make sure to equip it in your tool slot. The shovel itself provides one point of Farming Mastery. The easiest way to get the second point is through Inspirations. Gather Mushrooms and Berries until you complete Mushroom Hunter I and Berry Seeker I, then claim the rewards in the corresponding menu. The first levels do not require Faith and together provide enough experience to earn a Talent Point. Spend it on increasing Farming Mastery. Combined with the bonus from the Rusty Shovel, this gives you the required two points. We explain Technologies, Talents, and the Mastery requirements for different workstations in more detail in our Graveyard Keeper 2 progression and Technology guide.

How to Grow Wheat

Each planting consumes 4 Wheat Seeds. Select them at a prepared Garden Bed, complete the work, and leave the crop to grow. If you have built several beds, it makes sense to plant all of them at once so you have a better chance of getting the required five Wheat from your first harvest. You do not need Fertilizer or a zombie gardener for this quest. Once the crops are ready, harvest them and check how much Wheat and how many seeds you received back. The yield can vary, so do not assume that a single Garden Bed will always be enough. If you get fewer than five Wheat, simply plant another batch. While the Wheat is growing, you can work on Heffry and Jeffry's quests or continue Herbert's questline. You will need to progress through both branches early in the game anyway, so there is no reason to stand around waiting for the harvest.

How to Give Wheat to Herm

Once you have 5 Wheat, return to Herm's shop and choose the special dialogue option to hand over the free samples. Do not sell the Wheat through the regular trading menu, as doing so will not complete the quest.Herm takes the 5 Wheat and upgrades his shop to the next tier. You also receive Farmer's Clothes, a Story, Town Gratitude, 5 Village Reputation, and unlock recipes for vegetable dishes.

The Quiet Art

Herm's second early quest involves the fishing rod he lent to the twins. Head to Twins' Land and continue their storyline. You need to deal with the brothers' argument, speak with both of them, and complete their request involving Clay Plates. We cover this entire section in our walkthrough of all Heffry and Jeffry quests. After completing their quest, you receive a Basic Rod. Keep it with you, as Herm immediately asks you to put the rod to use and bring him two specific fish.

How to Catch a Roach and Gudgeon for Herm

Equip the Basic Rod and head to the fishing spot west of your garden. You need 1 Roach and 1 Gudgeon for the quest. Both fish can be caught without bait, so there is no need to spend additional resources on lures.Gudgeon is more common during the day, while the chance of catching a Roach is roughly the same regardless of the time of day. If you want a more detailed breakdown of fishing spots, bait, and available fish, see our Graveyard Keeper 2 fishing guide.Once you have caught both fish, return to Herm and select the fishing-related dialogue option. He takes 1 Roach and 1 Gudgeon, while you receive 2 Town Gratitude, a Story, and unlock recipes for river fish dishes.By this point, Herm's early quests and the twins' storyline also provide a convenient way to reach 10 Village Reputation. Turning in the Wheat gives you five points, while completing Heffry and Jeffry's Clay Plate request gives another five. This threshold is required for several later questlines, including Jack's quests.

How to Complete The Frill of the Chase and Make Lace

Later, Herm offers another quest called The Frill of the Chase. This time, the merchant only needs 1 Lace, but producing it requires a considerably more developed farm.First, unlock the Flax Thread Technology in the Farming branch for 45 green tech points. This allows you to build a Spinning Wheel and process Flax into Flax Thread. One standard crafting cycle turns 4 Flax into 4 Flax Thread, so you need at least two batches for this quest.Next, unlock Sewing Basics and build a Sewing Table in your yard. This is where you make the Lace Herm needs: one piece requires 8 Flax Thread. If the necessary Technologies or workstations are not available yet, continue developing the Farming branch. You cannot complete the request before reaching this stage of progression.Take the finished Lace to Herm and hand it over through the special dialogue option. Completing the quest upgrades his shop to Tier III and expands his inventory. This concludes Herm's known personal questline.
