QSSR, or Quick Spectral Super Resolution, is a streamlined AI upscaling solution derived from the technology behind PS5 Pro's PSSR. It was developed as part of Project Amethyst, Sony and AMD's joint graphics initiative. QSSR is optimized for the standard PS5 hardware and does not require the more powerful GPU or dedicated machine-learning resources available in PS5 Pro. Sony reduced the computational load through a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation for the base console.Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei were the first games to receive QSSR support, with patches released on October 1. Digital Foundry tested the technology and found that QSSR adds roughly 1.5-1.8 ms of extra frame time in one 1440p test in Marvel's Wolverine compared with the game's previous upscaler. In the standard 60 FPS mode, dynamic resolution scaling compensates for the added cost, so the frame-rate impact is limited. The resulting image is noticeably sharper, especially in fine details and textures. Sony does not position QSSR as a mandatory mode either. Players can choose between the existing rendering options and QSSR depending on the balance of image quality and performance they prefer.
For owners of the standard PS5, this is a meaningful upgrade. QSSR brings some of the image-quality benefits previously associated with PS5 Pro to the base console, especially in games with dense scenes and lots of fine detail. The technology can improve clarity without a major hit to frame rate when developers tune their modes around it. It does not attempt to invent new game content. Instead, it reconstructs and upscales the existing image while preserving the original artistic presentation.Sony plans to make QSSR broadly available to other PlayStation developers, giving studios tools to integrate the technology into more games in the future.
