On September 29, three weeks before launch, Activision shared new details about Collateral, a multiplayer mode coming to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. The information was tucked away near the end of a blog post about the PC version, but Eurogamer, GameSpot, and Dot Esports quickly picked it up. The idea is simple: classic Search and Destroy with an economy similar to Counter-Strike and Valorant. Two teams take turns attacking and defending two bomb sites. Instead of using custom loadouts, every player starts with a pistol and a fixed amount of cash. Eliminations and objective play earn in-match currency, which can be spent between rounds on weapons, armor, perks, and equipment. Any money you save carries over from round to round, so a successful round lets you enter the next one better equipped.
Timesaver.gg, citing the PC trailer and Activision's blog, reports that Collateral will be exclusive to PC at launch on Steam, Battle.net, and Xbox on PC. Eurogamer, however, notes that while the mode was highlighted in a PC-focused article, there is no clear indication that it will actually be limited to computers. Playground adds that the distinction may concern controls and optimization rather than availability itself. This isn't Call of Duty's first attempt at an economy-based mode. Black Ops 4 introduced Heist in 2018, which also let players buy gear between rounds. MW4 will also feature Inflation, a team-based mode built around collecting cash that appeared in the beta. But Collateral is currently the closest the series has come to the structure of a competitive tactical shooter.Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
