Ambers in Valor Mortis can affect healing, boost your weapons, and let you use Transmutations more often. In this guide, we'll cover every available Amber, explain what each one does, and show you where to find it.

How Ambers and duplicate pickups work

There are 29 unique Ambers, each with a different effect. There are more pickups than that because some Ambers appear in multiple places. A duplicate upgrades that Amber's rank instead of taking up another slot. Some effects have ranks I-III, while others have only one.Check your collection by name in the Ambers section of your inventory. If you don't have a particular effect at all, one of the locations listed below will be enough. If you're trying to upgrade your Ambers, check the other locations for the same one.You equip Ambers at a Lantern through the level-up menu. We've covered that in more detail in our guide to Amber slots and equipping Ambers. Here, we'll focus on finding them. You'll need story abilities to reach some late-game chests. Fire burns away golden vines, certain mechanisms require Stasis, and it's safer to return to dangerous poisonous areas after obtaining the Shield Transmutation at the University. Don't feel you have to grab everything on your first visit.

Best Ambers for healing and survival

Wound that Heals

Effect: Gradually restores lost health. Handy while exploring, since it helps conserve flasks between fights, but it won't replace quick healing when enemies are hitting you.Where to find it:
  • Vale of Wrath, Wolfsbane Field. Collect the cellar key in the cave beyond the elite enemy, then return to the large house near the beginning of the settlement. The Amber is in a chest in the cellar connected to the Lost Boy quest.
  • Vale of Wrath, Under the Bridge. At the road covered with bodies, turn right and head uphill. Defeat the miniboss near the house to get the Amber.
  • Cursed Hollow, Deep Water Lantern. Turn around and follow the main path back toward the cannon miniboss. Activate the Lantern first so you won't have to repeat the long run if things go wrong.

Tomorrow's Promise

Effect: The Ferrofluid Flask provides gradual health regeneration. Using it again refreshes the effect's duration.Where to find it:
  • Fallen Village, Marketplace. Complete Lullaby. Find the old key behind the house with the cradle, unlock the house across the water in the previous area, and bring the toy back to the cradle.
  • Cursed Hollow, Village Church. During the quest about the dead lovers, take the red ribbon from the grave behind the church and return it to the wreath in the Bride's arena.
  • Fortress, underground area near the Chapel. In the sewer room after a jump from a pole, go through the door on the left. At the bottom of the stairs, look for another ladder on the left. It leads to a long room with a switch-operated door and a chest on the right.

Dominatus

Effect: Critical attacks restore health. A good choice if you regularly stagger enemies and finish them with critical strikes.Where to find it:
  • Valley of Ashes, Military Camp. Cross the camp full of explosive barrels. Before heading uphill, turn left toward a tent containing a chest.
  • Caverns, Last Sunlight area. In the large room with campfires, stick to the left. Defeat the elite enemy among the other foes.
  • The Outskirts, Broken Bridge area. Before the wall-running section, check the platforms on the left. There's a chest above them. You can also return from the next Lantern near the gap.

Bountiful Harvest

Effect: Picking up Petroglobin Remnants restores health.Where to find it:
  • Fallen Village, Fields. Complete The Scarecrow. Bring back the pendant found beneath the large tree and the illustrated letter from the house. Once you've handed over both items, climb into the hayloft and watch the memory beside the two pillows.
  • Vale of Wrath. Complete The Deserter by collecting three pieces of the figurine from safe beehives: beside the beekeeper's house, near the entrance to the poisoned camp, and behind the house after the large bridge. Don't touch the hives marked with red crosses.
  • City of Orphans. Take the shortcut back toward the tower and climb the ladders to the elite enemy. Defeating it gives you another copy.

Limit Break

Effect: Excess healing from a flask is converted into temporary bonus health.Where to find it: In the Caverns, in the Old Mine section with several levels of wooden platforms and rope bridges. Drop to the lower level, turn away from the bridge, and use the grapple point near the wall-running section. The chest is tucked around the corner beneath a sloping platform.

Butcher's Carnage

Effect: Melee hits heal you, but flasks no longer restore health. This Amber is for a deliberately aggressive build. You can't just equip it for the healing and keep fighting as before.Where to find it:
  • Vale of Wrath, Under the Bridge. Complete In the Name of Art. Unlock the house by shooting through the window, move the painting, find the key near the grave, and explore the basement until you reach the artist's final letter.
  • Vale of Wrath, Ship Graveyard. Grapple back toward the village and turn right into the poisonous side path. The chest is on the balcony to the left of the entrance to this area.
  • The Outskirts, Harbour. During The King of Smugglers, collect the key from the ship's hold. Unlock the house near the harbour and go upstairs to the journal. The Amber chest is beside it.

Life Diverted

Effect: Flasks restore Petroglobin instead of health, while Transmutation damage restores some of your health. Make sure you're ready to rely on abilities for healing before equipping it.Where to find it:
  • Cursed Hollow, Deep Water area. Before the church, you'll find a round platform with a hay bale and an enemy wielding a cannon. Head to the island on the right, walk around the hay, and defeat the Eternal Guardsman. The chest is behind him.
  • City of Orphans, Shamble Street. Continue along the main route through the building. The chest is right by the exit.
  • Fortress, second courtyard. From the Lantern, head back into the side area on the left. In the building opposite, burn the golden vines, defeat the enemy that appears, and open the chest against the back wall.

Potent Concoction

Effect: A flask restores both health and Petroglobin. Unlike the previous Amber, this one still lets you heal normally.Where to find it:
  • Valley of Ashes, Quarry. After the first wooden platforms, drop onto the ledge. Opposite the shortcut ladder, burn the vines and take the chest behind them.
  • The Outskirts, Laudanum. To get this copy, agree to help the children and hand the woman the poisoned medicine. Your choice is locked in during the conversation, and refusing means losing this particular reward.
  • Fortress, Ramparts. Head up the steps from the Lantern and turn around. Shoot the weak point on the opposite wall, climb the revealed ladder, and check the side rooms. In the second room, crawl through the opening to reach the chest.

Iron Grip

Effect: Makes using your flask faster and prevents the action from being interrupted. We recommend trying this Amber early on. Finishing a heal in time is often more valuable than another damage boost.Where to find it: The Battlefield, Trenches. After the plunge-attack tutorial, turn right instead of climbing the wooden ledge. Open the chest behind the enemy in the dead end.

Indestructible Shell

Effect: Reduces damage taken from explosions.Where to find it:
  • Valley of Ashes, starting road. After the first Grenadier, check the chest on the left before the next metal carriage.
  • Cursed Hollow, Silent Cannons area. Behind Seamus's shack, find the chest near the exploding bodies. The chest is trapped too, so step back after opening it.
  • Fortress, second courtyard. Head left from the Lantern under cannon fire. At the end of the road, enter the small room on the left.

Payback

Effect: Getting hit while at low health triggers a Stasis explosion.Where to find it: University, Main Hall. Once you reach the circular room with access to the rooftop, climb down the ladder instead. The Amber drops from the cannon miniboss below.

Best Ambers for melee combat

Perfectionism

Effect: Increases melee damage while you're at full health. Great for careful duels, but the bonus temporarily disappears if you take a hit.Where to find it:
  • Valley of Ashes, Demolished Path. Take the side path toward the first Eternal Guardsman, defeat him, and open the chest behind him.
  • Caverns, Old Mine. Use the suspended crate, climb the ladder, and reach the upper platform. Defeat the next Guardsman in the cave at the end of the path and check the chest.
  • Vale of Wrath, beekeeper's house. Get the key from an Eternal Guardsman during The Deserter. Inside the house, the chest is at the back.

Glass Soldier

Effect: Increases melee damage but also increases the damage you take. If ordinary soldiers already send you back to the Lantern, leave this one unequipped for now.Where to find it:
  • Fallen Village, Orchard. In the boss arena, climb into the building on the right of the entrance. Break the crates and drop out of the back to reach the chest.
  • The Outskirts, Market Square. Find the house with hanging meat outside and a pretzel sign. Shoot the growth through the upper window, enter, and climb over the crate. Defeat the elite enemy upstairs.
  • Fortress, Courtyard. Go beneath the hanging banner and turn left in the large room. The Amber drops from the monstrous Eternal Guardsman at the end of the route.

Warrior's Fury

Effect: A kill temporarily increases movement speed and damage. More useful when fighting enemies in succession than against a lone boss with no reinforcements.Where to find it:
  • Fallen Village, Marketplace. Enter the house under fire from a group of enemies. On the upper floor, step onto the balcony and jump across to the chest.
  • Cursed Hollow, Silent Cannons area. Go through the house with three notes behind Seamus's shack. On the other side, defeat the dog miniboss.
  • University, Lift Shaft. In the underground room filled with square cages, defeat another dog miniboss.

Duellist's Focus

Effect: Widens the timing window for parrying with melee weapons.Where to find it: Return to the first Onslaught Arch on the Battlefield. Climb the rocks, pass the camp, and turn left at the fork. Shoot the weak point in the wall, defeat the Eternal Guardsman, and open the chest behind him. You'll need a firearm to access this area.

Fire Breathing

Effect: Attacking during a dodge triggers a fiery explosion.Where to find it: At the Fortress Main Gate. Defeat the cannon miniboss near the entrance. The Amber drops directly from the enemy, so there's no separate chest to find.

Best Ambers for firearms

Sleight of Hand

Effect: Speeds up reloading and weapon switching.Where to find it: Complete An Unheard Farewell in the Valley of Ashes. Speak with the man in the carriage, explore the route through the lift, and find the order beyond the golden vines. Unlock the shortcut and return to the quest giver. Your answer in the final conversation doesn't affect whether you receive this Amber.

Dilated Moment

Effect: Aiming slows your perception of time, drains stamina, and reduces firearm damage. Keeping your sights up constantly is a bad habit here, since you could run out of stamina for dodging.Where to find it: Vale of Wrath, Under the Bridge. In the fishing settlement, stick to the right near the river. Follow the bank to a dead end. The chest sits beneath a grapple point.

Lucky Shot

Effect: Shots have a chance not to consume ammunition.Where to find it:
  • Caverns, Last Sunlight area. In the large cave full of enemies, drop through the hole with a visible tunnel below. Follow it to a chest near a Grenadier.
  • Vale of Wrath, Poisoned Camp. After the two flamethrower enemies, check the chest in the corner. Opening it triggers bombs, so step away immediately.
  • Fortress, second courtyard. Head back from the Lantern into the side area, climb the stairs, and go to the far left corner toward the Fortress entrance. Drop from the ledge to the chest.

Sixth Sense

Effect: Boosts firearms after perfect dodges. Dodging bullets also briefly slows your perception of time.Where to find it: City of Orphans, Tribunal Square. Reach the children's burrow near the river. Climb the crates on the left and follow the upper route around the building to the chest.

Volatile End

Effect: Hitting weak points triggers an explosion.Where to find it: Fallen Village, Fields. Along the main route, enter the barn on the right that's filled with exploding bodies. The chest is against the far wall. Deal with the dangerous occupants first, unless you want your introduction to this Amber to be a little too literal.

Marksman's Bane

Effect: Lets you parry bullets and gain a pistol round for each successful deflection.Where to find it: Valley of Ashes, Quarry. After the first zipline, turn left instead of climbing the slope. Break the crates at the edge of the platform and follow the revealed path to the tower with the chest.

Best Ambers for Transmutations and Petroglobin

Bottomless Well

Effect: Gradually regenerates spent Petroglobin.Where to find it:
  • The Battlefield, Onslaught Arch. Turn around from the first Lantern and climb back up the rocks and branches. Burn the golden vines on the left to reveal a chest.
  • Caverns. Complete Homesick. Find the wife's letter beside the memory and the death notice on the boat, then return to where the quest began.
  • City of Orphans, Tribunal Square. After the house where you shoot weak points through a window, circle around the back of the building. Defeat the miniboss in the courtyard near the chest.

Transmuted Persistence

Effect: Transmutation damage restores a recoverable portion of your health.Where to find it: The Battlefield, Onslaught Arch. Head out into the field and keep left. Before passing through the metal carriage, burn the vines on the left. A chest is waiting beyond the enemies.

Lunatic's Grasp

Effect: Makes Burn and Stasis build up faster on enemies, but reduces your own resistance to those effects.Where to find it:
  • Caverns, Weeping Ledge area. After dropping into the room with many Carrion enemies, check the chest to the left of the vines you need to burn to progress.
  • The Outskirts, Market Square. Pass through the barn until you reach the grapple point ahead. Turn around and walk around the building. Jump across the boats into the side house containing the chest.
  • University, Lift Shaft. At the end of the hallway with poison on the lower level, drop down to two trapped chests. The Amber is in the one on the left.

Equivalent Exchange

Effect: Allows you to spend health when you run out of Petroglobin.Where to find it: Vale of Wrath, Wolfsbane Field. After destroying the second weak point required to progress, enter the cave with the shortcut back to the previous area. Use the grapple point in the room on the right and defeat the elite enemy on the upper platform. It's a fallback for an empty resource bar, not free magic. Keep an eye on your health after every cast.

Best Ambers for leveling, stealth, and stronger builds

Surplus

Effect: Increases the number of Catalysts earned from kills.Where to find it:
  • Valley of Ashes, Military Camp. Head uphill past the camp and burn the golden vines on the right. Inside the cave, shoot the lantern and weak point across the poisonous area, use the revealed grapple point, and follow the path to the chest on the cliff.
  • Caverns, Old Mine. By the minecart tracks, head back past the ladder near the shortcut. Follow the side passage to a moving crate, freeze the mechanism with Stasis, and climb the platforms on the right.
  • The Outskirts, Island of Whispers. On the long road with two tall enemies, look for the chest on the left, about halfway along.

Perfect Copy

Effect: Raises the ranks of your other equipped rank I and II Ambers.Where to find it: Return to The Other Side in the Valley of Ashes after obtaining the Shield Transmutation at the University. Cross the poisonous area toward the camp from The Emissary quest. Shoot the weak point on the carriage to open the way. If you can't get a clear angle, climb the rocks. The chest is in the tent immediately to your right. This Amber is especially useful if you're running several effects you haven't fully upgraded. If your other equipped Ambers are already rank III, free up this slot for something else.

Silent Squeak

Effect: Reduces movement noise and the chance of being detected.Where to find it: City of Orphans, Shamble Street. After grappling across the courtyard, you'll reach a room with stairs leading down. Head outside, climb onto the roof, and speak with the children through their burrow.Talk to the children along the way and check their other hiding places. Don't leave every conversation until your final visit, since getting this reward depends on your interactions with them.

Which Ambers should you equip first?

For a more comfortable playthrough, we recommend starting with Iron Grip and Duellist's Focus. The first helps you finish healing, while the second makes parrying more forgiving. When you find Wound that Heals, try it while exploring longer areas. If you're struggling to survive even without worrying about Ambers, check out our guide to the opening hours of Valor Mortis.Bottomless Well is useful if you cast Transmutations often, while Lucky Shot can help you save ammo. But don't equip Butcher's Carnage, Life Diverted, or Glass Soldier just because their initial bonuses sound tempting. Understand the drawback first, then test your build against enemies you already know.

How to complete the collection without missing rewards

Start by looking for Amber names you don't have, then work on upgrading their ranks. You only need one copy of each type to get every distinct effect. Duplicates are for upgrades. You can revisit the main regions after finishing the story, so there's no need to force your way toward a chest behind a poisonous barrier immediately. Here are the main exceptions and traps to keep in mind:
  • Laudanum. Your choice affects whether you get one copy of Potent Concoction. The other locations for this Amber remain available.
  • Children's burrows. Talk to the children as you progress if you want to get Silent Squeak.
  • Trapped chests. Be especially careful when opening chests in the Poisoned Camp, near Silent Cannons, and in the University underground areas. Make sure there's room to retreat before you open one.
  • Duplicate copies. Keep track of which locations you've checked. Having an Amber in your inventory confirms you've obtained that effect, but doesn't tell you which chest it came from.
