To complete the Free Spirit quest in The Witcher 3 Remastered, you need to bring Ivar five specific books. Two are sold in Velen and three more in Novigrad, so there is no need to search every island in Skellige for the right literature. We recommend collecting the entire set in a single trip to the mainland and only then returning to the quest giver. The quest is sometimes referred to by translated variants of its name, but the official English title is Free Spirit. Ivar hopes the books will reveal a way to free his beloved Irma from the vows of a priestess of Freya. Geralt briefly has to swap witcher work for book delivery, although the quest still begins with a fight.

Where to find Ivar and start Free Spirit

Ivar is on the southern shore of Snidhall Isle, north of the Ancient Crypt signpost on Ard Skellig. Reach the island by boat and look for two men arguing near the shore. One is the unarmed Ivar in blue clothing, while the other is preparing to kill him. Do not spend too long exploring the area first because it is best to intervene immediately.Kill the attacking warrior and speak to the man you saved. You will learn that the attacker was Irma's brother and disapproved of her relationship with Ivar. Agree to help find the books, then head to Velen and Novigrad. If you already bought some of the required volumes earlier, you do not need to purchase them again.

All five books for Ivar

Only the five titles listed below count for the quest. Another book about religion will not substitute for the required volume, even if its subject seems relevant. Check your inventory before traveling so you do not buy duplicate copies.
  • Religion and Life - sold by the merchant in the lower section of Crow's Perch, near the bridge entrance.
  • Tristianna and Isador - sold by the merchant in Lindenvale, next to the fast travel signpost.
  • The Curious Case of Virtuous Vegga - sold in a Novigrad shop southeast of St. Gregory's Bridge, next to the barber and notice board.
  • Change Your Life! A Handbook - sold by the loan shark in Novigrad near the Southern Gate area.
  • The Cult of Freya - sold by the disguised Eternal Fire priest and alchemist in Electors' Square on Temple Isle.

Religion and Life - Crow's Perch

Travel to Crow's Perch and find the regular merchant in the lower part of the settlement near the bridge entrance. Open his inventory and buy Religion and Life. You do not need to climb all the way up to the Baron's castle for this book because the merchant is below, close to the entrance to the fort.Do not confuse him with the craftsmen who sell weapons and armor. You specifically need the general merchant. If the book is already in your inventory, keep it for Ivar and move on to the next stop.

Tristianna and Isador - Lindenvale

The next stop is Lindenvale in Velen. The local merchant at the stall near the fast travel signpost sells the book you need. Speak to him and buy Tristianna and Isador. It is one of the five mandatory quest volumes, not optional reading material. We recommend grabbing it immediately after visiting Crow's Perch so you can finish the Velen purchases in one trip. After that, only three vendors in Novigrad remain. There is no need to search villagers' homes or buy every book available in the village.

The Curious Case of Virtuous Vegga - Novigrad shop

Travel to St. Gregory's Bridge and head southeast toward the Gildorf district. Look for the shop beside the barber and notice board. Its merchant sells The Curious Case of Virtuous Vegga, so you do not need to check every street vendor along the way. This same shopkeeper also carries items connected to the mage Aeramas, which can serve as an extra landmark if you have visited him before. Open the trade menu and select the book by name. Nothing else in his inventory is required for Ivar's quest.

Change Your Life! A Handbook - loan shark

For this book, visit the loan shark in Novigrad near the Southern Gate area. Enter the shop, speak to the owner, and buy Change Your Life! A Handbook. The important point is that you are looking for the Novigrad loan shark, not traveling to Oxenfurt itself. Older walkthroughs sometimes describe the vendor differently, but what matters here is his shop inventory rather than any nearby NPC with a similar description.

The Cult of Freya - priest in Electors' Square

The final book is sold by a man posing as a priest of the Eternal Fire on Temple Isle. Travel to Electors' Square and find the preacher near the fountain. Despite the name of the fast travel point, you do not need to enter a large palace because the vendor is outside.Talk to him until you gain access to his wares. He is actually an alchemist in hiding, and The Cult of Freya is among the items he sells. We recommend visiting during the day because the vendor may not be present at night. If he is missing from the square, meditate until daytime and check again.

How to give the books to Ivar and finish the quest

Once you have collected the full set, return to Snidhall Isle. Find Ivar near his hut at the base of the extinct volcano and speak to him about the books. You can hand them over as you collect them, but it is more convenient to bring all five in one visit and select the relevant dialogue options one after another. After the final book, Ivar decides that he should travel the world himself and look for a way to be with Irma. He thanks Geralt, and the quest ends. You do not need to bring the priestess to the island or search for a sixth book. Your part is finished once all five volumes have been delivered.

What to do if Free Spirit will not complete

First, compare all five titles with the list above and make sure you actually handed over every volume through dialogue. Reading a book and giving it to Ivar are separate things, so having its text among your journal entries does not count as turning in the quest item. Do not assume that any other book about Freya will work if the title is different. If you delivered the full set but the quest remains active, reload the save from before the conversation. Try giving Ivar the books one at a time, ending the conversation between hand-ins, then speak to him again. If the problem happened during the first encounter and Ivar died, buying the books on the mainland will not fix it. You need to return to a save from before the warrior attacked him.
