The Moose is one of the new animals introduced in the Deep North with Valheim 1.0. The creature is aggressive when first encountered, but it can be tamed, bred, and eventually used as a mount. In this guide, we'll explain where to find a Moose, what to feed it, and which materials are required to craft a Moose Saddle.

Where to Find a Moose

Moose spawn on the surface of the Deep North during both the day and night. They're usually easy to spot across open snowy terrain, although you can also encounter them among the trees.Don't immediately attack the first Moose you find. Starred variants can spawn as well, so if you're planning to build a proper breeding farm, it's worth looking for a rarer animal and taming that one instead.

How to Tame a Moose

You'll need Lingonberries to tame a Moose. The bushes grow directly in the Deep North, so start gathering the berries during your first expeditions into the biome. The taming process works almost exactly like it does for other animals. Prepare a secure enclosed area, lure the Moose inside, and drop Lingonberries where it can reach them. Then move away and avoid provoking the animal. The Moose must remain calm and fed for taming progress to continue. If enemies appear nearby or the player stays too close and keeps the animal alerted, progress can stop.Full taming takes around 30 minutes. Once the process is complete, the Moose will stop treating you as an enemy.

Can You Breed Moose?

Yes. Tamed Moose can breed using the same basic system as other domestic animals.Keep two tamed, fed, and calm Moose close to each other. After enough successful breeding checks, a Moose Calf will appear.Starred animals are especially valuable for breeding because offspring inherit the parent's level. That means you don't need to search the entire biome for another rare Moose every time you want to expand the herd.

How to Craft a Moose Saddle

Once a Moose is tamed, you can use it as a mount. To do that, you'll need a Moose Saddle, crafted at a level 2 Black Forge.Recipe:
  • Bloodgold - 4
  • Seal Pelt - 5
  • Timberwood - 5
  • Linen Thread - 15
If you've only just reached the Deep North, Bloodgold will probably be the first serious obstacle. Obtaining it is tied to Gammeltrolls and the biome's later resource-processing chain, so the Moose Saddle belongs to a slightly later stage of Deep North progression.

How to Ride a Moose

Once the saddle is crafted, place it on your hotbar and use it on a tamed Moose. You can then mount the animal and control it much like Valheim's other rideable creatures.Moose are particularly useful for crossing the open terrain of the Deep North. They can also damage certain objects while moving. If you're planning to spend a lot of time in the final biome, keeping at least one tamed and saddled Moose can make travel between your base, abandoned settlements, and major dungeons considerably faster.
