In the Deep North of Valheim, deep snow interferes not only with movement but also with construction. You cannot place a portal or build a proper base on an unprepared patch of ground, so it is worth crafting a Snow Shovel before your first expedition. In this guide, we'll explain how to unlock the tool's recipe, where to get Embers, and which materials you need to craft it.
First, defeat Fader in the Ashlands. You will receive the Fader Relic, which is used to build the Eternal Pyre. The structure is placed with a Stonecutter. You will need:
Fader Relic — 1;
Stone — 10.
Once placed, the Eternal Pyre periodically produces Embers. You do not need to collect them immediately, as the structure can hold the resource for a while. Embers are useful for more than just the shovel. Later, they are also used to craft Ember Charges, which are required to obtain Petrified Tissue from Gammeltrolls, so it is a good idea to build the Eternal Pyre as early as possible.
How to Craft the Snow Shovel
The recipe becomes available once you have discovered all the required materials. The tool is crafted at a Level 3 Black Forge.Image unavailableYou will need:
Finewood — 5;
Flametal — 4;
Embers — 2.
If you have already finished the Ashlands, you probably have the first two resources back at your base. All that remains is to wait for Embers to appear around the Eternal Pyre.
How to Clear Deep Snow
Equip the Snow Shovel and use it on snow-covered ground. The tool removes the deep layer of snow and exposes the surface underneath, allowing you to place structures there.Start by clearing a small area for a portal and Workbench. There is no reason to remove all the snow around your landing spot immediately. You can always expand the cleared area later if you decide to build a permanent base there.
Should You Upgrade the Snow Shovel?
The tool can be upgraded at the Black Forge. The main benefit is increased durability. If you plan to clear a huge area for a settlement, upgrading it will be useful. For normal progression and a few small building sites, the base version is enough.
