The Valheim Hearth & Home update introduced several new building pieces, furniture items, food recipes, and one especially useful device for players who hate clutter: the Obliterator. It lets us permanently destroy unwanted items and converts some of them into Coal. The mechanic is still present in Valheim 1.0, although a few details have changed since the original version of this guide. Below I will explain how the Obliterator works, where to get a Thunder Stone, how to find Haldor, and how much Coal we actually receive for different items.

What Is the Obliterator in Valheim?

The Obliterator is basically Valheim's answer to all the junk that starts piling up after dozens of raids and expeditions. Skeleton trophies, Greydwarf drops, old tools, spare ammunition, and other unwanted items can quickly fill entire rows of chests. Before Hearth & Home, our options were not particularly elegant. We could throw unwanted items somewhere far away, dump them into the ocean, store them forever, or use developer commands such as removedrops.

The Obliterator gives us a proper in-game way to get rid of those items. Place it somewhere convenient, open its inventory, put unwanted objects inside, close the container, and pull the lever.A lightning bolt immediately strikes the machine and destroys everything inside. We do not need a thunderstorm or an Aurora. The Obliterator summons its own lightning.

There is one important safety detail that is easy to overlook. The lightning strike deals a huge amount of Lightning damage directly to the Obliterator, which is immune to that damage, and also deals a small amount of Lightning damage in the immediate area around it.In other words, do not stand directly beside the Obliterator when pulling the lever, and do not surround it with fragile objects if we can avoid it.

Does the Obliterator Give Coal?

Yes. The old version of this guide made the result sound almost random, but the amount of Coal is actually based on conversion ratios. The basic rates in the current version are:
  • Most trophies: 1 trophy gives 1 Coal.
  • Wood, Core Wood, Fine Wood, Ancient Bark, and Yggdrasil Wood: 5 items give 1 Coal.
  • Most arrows: 20 arrows give 1 Coal.
  • Most bolts: 20 bolts give 1 Coal.
  • Most other items: 10 items give 1 Coal.
There are several exceptions among newer trophies, arrows, and bolts, so the exact result can vary for later-game items. If the amount we put inside is below the required conversion threshold, the Obliterator can simply destroy the items without producing any Coal.
Do not use the Obliterator as a replacement for a Charcoal Kiln. Five Wood becoming one Coal is a terrible exchange compared with the normal 1-to-1 conversion in a Charcoal Kiln. The Obliterator is primarily a trash disposal tool, with Coal as a small bonus.
Trophies are one of the best things to burn because many of them have little use once we have kept the few needed for decoration or crafting.

How to Build the Obliterator in Valheim

To unlock the Obliterator recipe, we need to discover all of its construction materials and have access to a Forge. The recipe is still:
  1. Iron x8.
  2. Copper x4.
  3. Thunder Stone x1.
  4. A nearby Forge.
Equip the Hammer while standing within the Forge's building radius. The Obliterator appears in the crafting-related section of the build menu once we have picked up the required materials.Unlike a normal crafted item, we do not manufacture the Obliterator at the Forge itself. We place it with the Hammer while the Forge is close enough.

Where to Get a Thunder Stone in Valheim

The Thunder Stone cannot be mined or crafted. We have to buy it from Haldor, the Dvergr trader who lives in the Black Forest.

A Thunder Stone costs:
50 Coins
There is one progression requirement in the current version of Valheim: Haldor only starts selling the Thunder Stone after we defeat The Elder. This means finding Haldor early is not enough by itself. If the Thunder Stone is missing from his inventory, defeat The Elder and return to the trader. The Thunder Stone weighs 10 units, can stack, and can be carried through a normal portal.

How to Find Haldor

Haldor appears in the Black Forest. His exact position depends on the world seed. The way his spawn works is a little more complicated than simply saying that one random trader is placed somewhere in the world. Valheim generates several possible Haldor locations. Once we approach one of them closely enough and that location is activated, Haldor permanently appears there and the other candidate locations are discarded. His trader icon then appears on the world map.If we have not found him yet, explore Black Forest biomes farther from the center of the world. Haldor's candidate locations are generated away from the starting area, so sailing around large Black Forest coastlines is often much faster than searching every forest on foot.If you need a more detailed route, read our guide to finding Haldor and earning Coins in Valheim.

How to Use the Obliterator

Once the machine is built, using it takes only a few seconds:
  1. Open the Obliterator's container.
  2. Put all unwanted items inside.
  3. Close the container.
  4. Move slightly away from the machine.
  5. Pull the lever on the side.
  6. Wait for the lightning strike.
  7. Open the Obliterator again and collect any Coal produced by the conversion.
The items destroyed this way are gone permanently. There is no undo button and no way to recover a sword, armor piece, trophy, or stack of resources after Thor has turned it into smoke. So yes, the machine is perfect for garbage, but I would still look through the inventory one final time before pulling the lever. Accidentally obliterating a rare weapon for a fraction of a piece of Coal is a very Valheim way to ruin an evening.

Is the Obliterator Worth Building?

Definitely, but not because it is a good Coal farm. Its real value is convenience. Once we have spent enough time in one world, our base inevitably fills with old trophies, low-tier materials, duplicate equipment, and random enemy drops. The Obliterator lets us clean all of this up without throwing items into the sea or filling another storage building with things we will never use.The recipe is also relatively cheap by the time we have defeated The Elder and progressed far enough to obtain Iron.If we actually need Coal in large quantities, use a Charcoal Kiln or another proper Coal-producing method instead. Use the Obliterator for the things we genuinely want to delete.
