In Valheim, Coins are used to buy unique equipment, fishing supplies, cooking ingredients, cosmetics, inventory upgrades, and other items that cannot be obtained through normal crafting. You can find Coins directly while exploring or earn them by selling valuables to one of the game's traders. The old version of this guide was written when Haldor was the only merchant in Valheim. In 2026, there are three traders: Haldor in the Black Forest, Hildir in the Meadows, and the Bog Witch in the Swamp. Valheim 1.0 also added new Deep North valuables and permanent inventory upgrades sold by Haldor.
How to Get Coins in Valheim
Coins can be found in chests, dungeons, abandoned structures, and several enemy loot tables. Early in the game, Burial Chambers are one of the most reliable places to start building a coin reserve because they can contain both Coins and valuables.Useful sources include:
Burial Chambers in the Black Forest.
Troll Caves.
Sunken Crypts in the Swamp.
Stone Graves and Viking Graveyards.
Chests in abandoned structures.
Trolls, which can drop Coins.
Fulings in the Plains.
Dvergr in the Mistlands.
Coins can pass through portals, so you do not need to transport them by ship.
What Valuables Can Be Sold to Traders?
All three traders buy the same valuables for the same prices. Sold valuables cannot be bought back, so make sure you do not want to keep an item for decoration before selling it.
Early- and Mid-Game Valuables
Amber — 5 Coins. Commonly found in Burial Chambers and treasure chests.
Amber Pearl — 10 Coins. Found in dungeons, graves, and treasure containers.
Ruby — 20 Coins. Found in Burial Chambers, Sunken Crypts, and various chests.

Grimvarn — 55 Coins.
Solryth — 95 Coins.

The four gemstones are found in Mörkhalla, including treasure containers and gem deposits in the dungeon. They have no normal crafting use, so their main purpose is to be sold.
How to Find Buried Treasure with the Wishbone
Some valuables are hidden underground and are difficult to locate by randomly digging. After defeating the third Forsaken, Bonemass, you receive the Wishbone. Equip it to detect hidden objects nearby. The effect becomes stronger as you approach the target. The Wishbone is useful for:
Finding buried treasure in the Meadows.
Locating hidden Silver deposits in the Mountains.
Detecting several other concealed objects and resources.
We explain how to defeat Bonemass and the other Forsaken in our Valheim boss guide.
How to Find Haldor
How to Find Haldor in ValheimHow to Find Haldor in ValheimHaldor is the main equipment trader and is found in the Black Forest. Each world generates several possible Haldor camp locations. The first one a player approaches becomes his permanent location for that world. When you get close enough, a merchant bag icon appears on the map automatically. There is no rule that places Haldor next to a boss altar. The old version of this guide incorrectly suggested that he always spawned near one.The safest way to find him without using external seed tools is to explore large Black Forest regions, especially areas farther from the starting stones. Sailing along coastlines and checking Black Forest islands can save a lot of time.Once you find Haldor, build a portal nearby. His camp is surrounded by a protective dome that hostile creatures cannot enter.
What Does Haldor Sell in Valheim 1.0?
Haldor's inventory grows as you defeat bosses.
Yule Hat — 100 Coins. Cosmetic headgear.
Dverger Circlet — 620 Coins. Provides a permanent forward-facing light while equipped.
Megingjord — 950 Coins. Increases maximum carry weight by 150.
Fishing Rod — 350 Coins.
Fishing Bait x20 — 10 Coins.
Barrel Hoops x3 — 100 Coins. Used to build Barrels.
Ymir Flesh — 120 Coins. Appears after The Elder has been defeated and is used in several weapon recipes.
Thunder Stone — 50 Coins. Appears after The Elder and is required to build the Obliterator.
Wider Pockets — 1,000 Coins. Unlocks after Moder and permanently adds one inventory row to the character.
Egg — 1,500 Coins. Unlocks after Yagluth. You need eggs to begin chicken breeding.
Deeper Pockets — 2,000 Coins. Unlocks after The Queen and permanently adds another inventory row.
What Should You Buy from Haldor First?
For most players, the best early purchase is Megingjord. The extra 150 carry weight is useful during almost every mining and building trip.A sensible priority is:
Megingjord for additional carry weight.
Fishing Rod if you plan to use the fishing system.
Dverger Circlet if you frequently explore dark dungeons.
Wider Pockets as soon as you defeat Moder and can afford it.
Eggs after Yagluth if you want to start producing chicken-based food.
Deeper Pockets after The Queen.
How to Find Hildir
Hildir is another Dvergr trader, but unlike Haldor she appears in the Meadows, generally much farther from the world center. When you approach one of her possible camp locations, a dress-shaped icon appears on the map and that camp becomes her permanent location.Hildir is mostly a cosmetics and quest trader. A map table at her camp reveals three special dungeon types:
Smouldering Tomb in the Black Forest.
Howling Cavern in the Mountains.
Sealed Tower in the Plains.
Each contains a miniboss and one of Hildir's stolen chests:
Hildir's Brass Chest from Brenna.
Hildir's Silver Chest from Geirrhafa.
Hildir's Bronze Chest from Zil and Thungr.
Returning these chests unlocks additional clothing, headgear, fireworks, and other cosmetic goods.
How to Find the Bog Witch
The Bog Witch is the third trader and lives deep in the Swamp. Her hut is protected by the same type of safe zone used by the other merchants. She was added in the Bog Witch update and is mainly associated with Cooking, Farming, meads, feasts, and special ingredients. Her stock includes items such as:
Candle Wick.
Scythe Handle.
Love Potion.
Toadstool.
Fresh Seaweed.
Cured Squirrel Hamstring.
Powdered Dragon Eggshells.
Pungent Pebbles.
Ivy Seeds.
Serving Tray.
Woodland Herb Blend.
Seafarer's Herbs.
Mountain Peak Pepper Powder.
Grasslands Herbalist Harvest.
Herbs of the Hidden Hills.
Fiery Spice Powder.
Seasoning of the Gourd, which becomes available after defeating Kall Fimbulbringer in the Deep North.
Some of her inventory unlocks only after specific bosses or creatures have been defeated.Valheim 1.0 also added the Crown of Roots to her late-game stock. It becomes available after killing a Writhan and costs 3,000 Coins.
Can You Sell Valuables to Hildir and the Bog Witch?
Yes. In the current version of Valheim, Haldor, Hildir, and the Bog Witch all buy valuables at the same prices. You do not need to return to Haldor just to sell Amber, Rubies, Silver Necklaces, Ancient Coins, or Deep North gemstones. This is particularly useful late in the game because you can sell Mörkhalla valuables to whichever trader is most convenient.
Best Ways to Make Money in Valheim in 2026
If your goal is simply to earn Coins quickly, use the method that fits your progression.
Early game: clear Burial Chambers and Troll Caves, collect Amber, Amber Pearls, Rubies, and Coins.
Swamp progression: search Sunken Crypts and sell valuables you find while collecting Iron.
Plains and Mistlands: kill Fulings and explore Dvergr areas, both of which can provide Coins while you progress normally.
Deep North: explore Mörkhalla and collect Ancient Coins, Grimvarn, Solryth, Veydris, and especially Draumyx.
For a new character, your first major savings target should usually be the [b]950 Coins required for Megingjord. Later, keep another 3,000 Coins available for Wider Pockets and Deeper Pockets after their boss requirements are met.The economy in Valheim is much more important in 1.0 than it was during the game's early years. Haldor now sells permanent character upgrades, Hildir offers a full quest chain and cosmetic rewards, the Bog Witch powers several Cooking and feast systems, and the Deep North provides valuable new trade loot. Coins are no longer something you collect only to buy a belt and a fishing rod.
