Cyberpunk 2077: How to Level Up Fast

Cyberpunk 2077 has changed dramatically since launch, and the old leveling system no longer matches the current game. Update 2.0 rebuilt the Perk trees, replaced the previous Skills with five new progression tracks, made enemies scale with V's level, and changed how equipment tiers appear in loot and shops. As of Patch 2.31, the fastest way to level is not to grind one enemy group or raise the difficulty as high as possible, but to combine story missions with Side Jobs, Fixer Gigs, and NCPD Scanner Hustles. If you own Phantom Liberty, the character level cap is also higher than in the base game.

How Experience and Levels Work in Cyberpunk 2077

V has several separate progression systems, and they should not be confused with one another. Regular XP raises the character's overall level, Street Cred has its own reputation bar, and Headhunter, Netrunner, Shinobi, Solo, and Engineer each gain separate Skill XP from the actions associated with that playstyle. Character levels grant Attribute and Perk Points, while Skill progression unlocks passive bonuses at fixed milestones and can also award additional Perk Points. Because these systems advance at different speeds, it is completely normal to have a high Street Cred level while one or more Skills are still far from their cap.Level also affects the quality of equipment that appears throughout Night City. Since Update 2.0, weapon and loot tiers become widely available at specific player-level thresholds, while cyberware vendors also improve their stock as V grows stronger. This means leveling is not only about gaining Attribute and Perk Points: it also gives you access to better weapons, cyberware, and general loot. Enemies scale with V as well, so you no longer need to clear districts in an old fixed level order.

How to Level Up Fast

The most efficient method is still to complete Main Jobs and Side Jobs. Major quests award large chunks of XP, and many of them also contain combat encounters that provide additional experience on the way to the objective. Side Jobs are especially useful because they combine strong XP rewards with eddies, Street Cred, Iconic gear, and access to further quest chains. If your goal is to reach the level cap without mindless grinding, simply clearing substantial quest content is faster and more useful than repeatedly killing random gang members.Between larger quests, complete Fixer Gigs and NCPD Scanner Hustles. Assaults in Progress are usually short, while Suspected Organized Crime Activities contain more enemies and often valuable loot or Iconic crafting specifications. These activities are densely distributed across Night City, so you can clear several while traveling from one Side Job to another instead of wasting time driving across the map solely for XP. They also provide Street Cred, making them one of the best ways to advance both major progression bars at the same time.If you own Phantom Liberty, do not rush into Dogtown only because the level cap rises to 60. The expansion contains plenty of XP through its Main Jobs, Side Jobs, gigs, and other activities, so it is usually better to let those ten additional levels come naturally while playing the DLC. Starting Phantom Liberty too late can leave you sitting at the cap for a large part of Dogtown, while entering at a reasonable midgame level lets its content contribute to your build progression. The game scales enemies to V, so there is no need to reach level 50 before beginning the expansion.

Do Higher Difficulties Give More XP?

Do not switch to Hard or Very Hard purely as an XP farming trick. Quest and gig completion rewards are not multiplied simply because you selected a harder difficulty, and longer fights can reduce your real XP per minute if enemies take substantially more time to kill. Higher enemy health can sometimes result in more Skill XP for certain combat Skills because you perform more relevant actions during a fight, but that is a different system from V's normal character level. If the only goal is to level V as quickly as possible, use whichever difficulty lets you clear missions and enemy groups efficiently. This makes the old advice to increase difficulty for dramatically better leveling outdated. Very Hard is worth choosing because you enjoy the combat challenge, not because it is secretly the optimal XP setting. A strong build on Normal or Hard that clears encounters quickly will usually progress through quest content faster than an underpowered build struggling through Very Hard. Since mission completion provides the most important bursts of XP, completion speed matters more than squeezing extra combat actions out of every enemy.

Best Activities for Farming XP

If you want to level efficiently while postponing the main story, start by clearing the Fixer Gigs and NCPD activities in the districts you are already visiting. Gigs have clear objectives, good rewards, and enough combat or stealth opportunities to advance several progression systems at once, while NCPD Scanner Hustles are ideal for filling gaps between larger missions. Long Side Job chains are also excellent because completing one stage often unlocks another without requiring random open-world grinding. Random gang encounters still give XP, but they are better treated as bonus fights rather than the core of a leveling route.A practical loop is to pick a Side Job, complete nearby NCPD markers on the way, finish any Fixer Gig in the same area, sell unwanted weapons at a Drop Point, and then move to the next quest. This keeps downtime low while earning XP, Street Cred, eddies, components, and equipment simultaneously. You can find our current money-making recommendations in the Cyberpunk 2077 money guide. There is little reason to spend hours farming one respawning group when the map already contains enough meaningful content to reach high levels naturally.

What Is the Maximum Level in Cyberpunk 2077?

The maximum character level depends on whether Phantom Liberty is installed. In the base game, V can reach level 50, while owners of Phantom Liberty can continue to level 60. Street Cred remains capped at 50 in both versions, so seeing the reputation bar stop while V continues gaining normal levels is completely normal. Each of the five Skills introduced in Update 2.0 has its own separate cap of 60, even though a base-game character without Phantom Liberty still stops at overall level 50.Each Attribute can be raised to a maximum of 20. Even at level 60, you do not receive enough Attribute Points to maximize Body, Reflexes, Technical Ability, Intelligence, and Cool simultaneously, so build specialization still matters. Perk Points are more flexible because individual Perks can be refunded outside combat and redistributed for free, while Attribute Points normally have only a single full reset available during a playthrough. Plan your Attributes carefully, especially if you want several level-20 capstone abilities in the same build.

How to Raise Street Cred Fast

Street Cred is separate from the main level and represents V's reputation as a mercenary. Gigs, Side Jobs, NCPD Scanner Hustles, and eliminating wanted criminals all provide Street Cred XP, so the same activities used for fast character leveling usually raise reputation at the same time. The maximum Street Cred level is 50, regardless of whether Phantom Liberty is installed. You normally reach that cap well before exhausting all of Night City's optional content if you regularly work for fixers and clear police activities.Street Cred should not be confused with item level or Skill progression. It affects parts of Night City's progression and rewards, while V's character level controls broader scaling and equipment-tier availability. Because Update 2.0 changed vendors, cyberware, loot, and enemy scaling, many launch-era guides overstate the importance of grinding Street Cred before continuing the story. In the current game, simply combine gigs and side activities with normal quest progression and both bars will rise without a dedicated reputation farm.

How Skill Progression Works After Update 2.0

The old Athletics, Stealth, Cold Blood, Engineering, and weapon-specific skill structure is gone. Update 2.0 merged the progression system into five Skills: Headhunter, Netrunner, Shinobi, Solo, and Engineer. These Skills are not limited by the level of a corresponding Attribute and can each reach level 60, granting passive bonuses every five levels. They also award a Perk Point at levels 15 and 35, so raising Skills contributes directly to the number of Perks available for your build.

Do not try to raise all five Skills evenly unless you actually enjoy constantly changing playstyles. A Netrunner will naturally level Netrunner much faster than Solo, while a shotgun-and-Gorilla-Arms build will do the opposite, and that is how the system is designed to work. Skill Shards found as loot can also grant direct progression XP to one of the five categories, so pick them up whenever they appear. The important point is that Skill levels no longer determine whether you are allowed to buy a Perk in the way the old launch-era system worked.

Use the Rested Buff to Level Skills Faster

Sleeping in one of V's apartments grants the Rested status, which temporarily increases Skill XP. This affects Headhunter, Netrunner, Shinobi, Solo, and Engineer progression rather than acting as a universal multiplier for all quest XP. If you are deliberately trying to raise one of those Skills, sleep before a long sequence of gigs, NCPD activities, or combat-heavy Side Jobs. The bonus is easy to maintain because apartment beds are available throughout normal progression and do not cost resources to use. This is particularly useful when one Skill is lagging behind the rest of your build. Equip weapons and cyberware associated with that Skill, activate Rested, then clear several combat activities instead of grinding the same enemy group for hours. Skill Shards can accelerate the process further, and the level-15 and level-35 milestones are especially valuable because each grants an additional Perk Point. Treat Rested as a Skill-progression tool, not as a reason to sleep before turning in every quest.

Fastest Leveling Strategy in 2026

For a fresh character, progress through Act 1 normally and complete the Watson activities that are already close to your objectives. Once Night City opens up, alternate Main Jobs with substantial Side Jobs, Fixer Gigs, and NCPD Scanner Hustles instead of committing to only one category. Sleep before combat-heavy sessions when you want faster Skill progression, sell or dismantle unwanted loot as you go, and avoid raising the difficulty solely for XP. With Phantom Liberty installed, let Dogtown supply part of the journey from level 50 to 60 rather than exhausting the entire base-game map first. The current leveling system rewards variety much more cleanly than the launch version did. Main and Side Jobs provide the best overall progress, open-world activities fill the gaps, and your chosen combat style automatically develops the relevant Skills in the background. You do not need an exploit, an infinite enemy route, or a Very Hard playthrough to reach the cap efficiently. Play the high-value content in compact geographic clusters and V will gain levels, Street Cred, money, equipment, and Skill progression at the same time.
