Vehicles in Cyberpunk 2077 work very differently from the launch version of the game. Fixers no longer spam V with sales offers, purchased cars are handled through AUTOFIXER, Street Cred unlocks more of the catalog, and later updates added armed vehicles, CrystalCoat, TWINTONE, AutoDrive, Delamain taxis, and several new reward cars. You can still steal almost anything you see on the street, but a random stolen vehicle does not become part of V's permanent collection. This guide explains how buying, stealing, summoning, customizing, and unlocking vehicles works in the current version of Cyberpunk 2077.

Can You Steal Cars in Cyberpunk 2077?

Yes, V can still steal civilian and gang vehicles throughout Night City. Depending on the vehicle, the game may require enough Body to pull the driver out or enough Technical Ability to bypass the lock, while some unattended vehicles can simply be entered without a check. Update 2.0 also made some NPCs react more aggressively when V hijacks their car, and stealing in front of the police can quickly lead to a wanted level. The important limitation is that a normal stolen car remains temporary and does not become one of V's summonable vehicles.Driving a stolen car across the city does not register it as owned, and there is no garage where you can permanently store arbitrary traffic vehicles. If you abandon the car, move far enough away, reload the game, or progress through other activities, it can disappear. This remains true even if you find a paint scheme or model that you would rather keep than the version sold through AUTOFIXER. The permanent vehicle list is reserved for cars and motorcycles that the game explicitly grants, sells, or unlocks through quests and special activities.

Can You Add a Stolen Vehicle to V's Garage?

You cannot permanently add an ordinary stolen street vehicle to V's collection. Cyberpunk 2077 does contain several cars that are obtained by stealing, finding, or claiming them during specific quests, but those are scripted rewards rather than a general vehicle ownership system. When the game intends V to keep one of these vehicles, the car is added to the owned-vehicle list after the relevant objective is completed. Simply stealing the same model from traffic will not produce the same result. This distinction matters more after Updates 2.2 and 2.3 because many vehicles that once appeared only as traffic models are now available through AUTOFIXER or dedicated side jobs. Update 2.2 added ten commonly requested street vehicles to the store, while Update 2.3 introduced more cars through purchases and new quests. As a result, finding a permanent version of a model is often easier than it was in the original release. If a car does not appear in your summon menu after you leave it, the game does not consider it yours.

How to Buy Cars Through AUTOFIXER

The old fixer-message system was removed in Update 2.0. Vehicles are now purchased through the AUTOFIXER netpage, which you can open from the computer in one of V's apartments or from dedicated AUTOFIXER terminals around Night City. The terminals are located at places such as gas stations and repair shops, and the world map has an AUTOFIXER filter that makes them easy to find. The store sorts vehicles by manufacturer and shows special icons for models with built-in weapons or compatible customization features.

Open AUTOFIXER, choose a manufacturer, select the vehicle you want, and confirm the purchase if you have enough eurodollars and meet its unlock requirements. The car or motorcycle is added directly to V's owned-vehicle list, so you do not need to travel to a physical parking spot and manually collect it. This is a major change from the launch version, where fixers sent individual messages and each vehicle had to be bought at a marked location. The old Journal section built around those sales offers should therefore no longer be used as the main method of buying vehicles.

Why Are Some AUTOFIXER Vehicles Locked?

Street Cred is still one of the main progression requirements for vehicle purchases. As V earns more Street Cred, additional models become available in AUTOFIXER, which means an expensive car may remain unavailable even if you already have enough money to pay for it. Some vehicles added by later updates or Phantom Liberty use additional unlock conditions tied to quests, special activities, or Vehicle Contracts. Always read the requirement shown in AUTOFIXER rather than assuming every locked car only needs a higher character level.Street Cred is earned naturally from Gigs, NCPD Scanner activities, jobs, and other mercenary work around Night City. The maximum Street Cred level remains 50, and reaching higher tiers expands the selection of vehicles available for purchase. Phantom Liberty can add another progression layer because several Dogtown-related vehicles depend on completing repeatable work for Muamar "El Capitan" Reyes. If you are trying to unlock a particular model, the store itself is the best place to check whether the missing requirement is Street Cred or another activity.

How Vehicle Contracts Work in Phantom Liberty

Phantom Liberty adds repeatable Vehicle Contracts through Muamar Reyes. These activities appear after the relevant Dogtown progression and ask V to steal a marked vehicle and deliver it while dealing with conditions such as a time limit, hostile pursuers, or an undamaged-delivery requirement. Finishing contracts rewards money and other loot, while repeated completions also unlock some Phantom Liberty vehicles for purchase through AUTOFIXER. They are therefore useful even if you are not interested in the individual stolen car used during the contract.Vehicle Contracts also interact with the modern vehicle economy by providing AUTOFIXER discounts. Update 2.1 added another source of discounts by making races replayable after completing The Beast in Me, with race victories awarding eurodollars and a discount for the AUTOFIXER website. These discounts are useful when you are collecting expensive high-end models rather than buying one or two cheap vehicles. They do not change the basic ownership rule, so a contract vehicle only becomes permanently yours when the game explicitly grants or sells that model.

How to Get Free and Quest Reward Vehicles

Not every permanent vehicle needs to be purchased. Cyberpunk 2077 contains cars and motorcycles awarded through main jobs, side jobs, hidden encounters, lifepath content, and exploration, and several later updates added more of these reward vehicles. Once the game formally grants the vehicle, it appears in the same summon menu as anything bought through AUTOFIXER. This makes quest rewards one of the best ways to expand V's collection without spending large amounts of money.Update 2.3 added several notable examples, including the Yaiba ARV-Q340 Semimaru and the Rayfield Caliburn "Mordred," both tied to new side jobs, while the Chevillon Legatus 450 Aquila was added directly to AUTOFIXER. The Yaiba ASM-R250 Muramasa also has its own acquisition path and can later become purchasable if the related side job is failed under the supported conditions. Older examples include vehicles earned from characters such as Jackie, Panam, Claire, and Delamain, as well as hidden cars discovered through exploration. These vehicles are scripted exceptions to the rule that random stolen cars cannot be saved.

How to Summon a Car or Motorcycle

On PC, the default vehicle call key is V. Tapping it summons the most recently selected owned vehicle, while holding it opens the vehicle list so you can choose a specific car or motorcycle from your collection. After selecting a vehicle, the game attempts to bring it to a nearby road or accessible position rather than spawning it directly on top of V. The exact controller button depends on the platform and control layout, so follow the vehicle-call prompt shown in the HUD if you are not using keyboard and mouse.

The launch-era claim that a vehicle can always be summoned during combat or a police chase is too broad for the current game. The summon icon can become unavailable in interiors, scripted quest zones, restricted areas, or other states where the game temporarily blocks vehicle delivery. If the icon is disabled, move back onto a normal public street, finish the active combat or scripted sequence, and try again after the restriction clears. A permanently unavailable icon after returning to normal free roam can indicate a bug, but temporary restrictions are expected behavior.

Why Is the Vehicle Summon Button Red or Unavailable?

The most common reason is that V is standing somewhere the game cannot safely deliver a vehicle. Interiors, underground sections, enclosed mission spaces, some combat zones, and specific scripted sequences can temporarily disable the summon system. Walking back toward an ordinary road usually restores the option once the game considers the area valid again. The same issue can appear while a quest is controlling movement or temporarily restricting open-world systems. If the summon function remains unavailable in normal free roam, first hold the vehicle button and try selecting a different owned vehicle. Fast traveling to another district or making a manual save and reloading can also clear occasional stuck states. Make sure you actually own a summonable vehicle, especially early in the story when V's starting car may temporarily be unavailable after The Heist. Persistent problems after those checks are more likely to be a bug or mod conflict than a normal gameplay restriction.

How AutoDrive Works

Update 2.3 added AutoDrive to owned vehicles. Set a destination or job objective, enter one of your cars, make sure the vehicle is on a road, and activate AutoDrive with the displayed control, which is G by default on PC. The vehicle will drive toward the destination automatically, and if no destination is selected, the system can enter a free-roam mode for a more relaxed trip through Night City. AutoDrive is disabled when V enters combat or when the vehicle is heavily damaged.Patch 2.31 improved the system substantially. Cars now drive more smoothly toward selected destinations, overtake blocking vehicles, and no longer stop at traffic lights while traveling to a marked destination, while the free-roam mode follows traffic rules more reliably. Update 2.3 also added a Cinematic Camera that can be activated during AutoDrive for a more passive sightseeing experience. This makes owned cars useful for more than manual driving, especially when crossing long distances without using fast travel.

How to Use Delamain Taxis

Update 2.3 also added an on-demand Delamain taxi service. Complete Don't Lose Your Mind, wait for the follow-up message from Delamain, and the cab becomes available through the same vehicle-call menu used for V's normal cars. Select Delamain Cab and request the ride, then use it as a self-driving taxi rather than taking direct control like an ordinary owned vehicle. This feature works regardless of the outcome chosen at the end of Don't Lose Your Mind. The Delamain service is separate from AutoDrive on V's personal vehicles. With AutoDrive, you remain inside one of your own compatible vehicles while the car navigates toward a destination, while the Delamain option specifically summons a cab service. Patch 2.31 fixed several issues related to the taxi system, including Johnny incorrectly appearing in the passenger seat every time. Both systems are convenient alternatives when you want to travel through the city without manually driving the entire route.

Can You Customize Vehicle Colors?

Yes, although Cyberpunk 2077 still does not offer a traditional garage with engine tuning, suspension upgrades, custom wheels, and interchangeable body parts. The modern customization system is based mainly on CrystalCoat and TWINTONE, which allow supported owned vehicles to change their exterior color schemes. Update 2.2 expanded CrystalCoat beyond Rayfield to brands such as Herrera, Mizutani, Quadra, and Villefort, while Update 2.3 expanded compatibility even further. AUTOFIXER marks compatible vehicles so you can see which models support these systems before buying them.TWINTONE lets V scan the color scheme of a compatible vehicle with Kiroshi optics and save that scheme for a fee, after which it becomes available in the CrystalCoat menu for supported vehicles. Some quest vehicles, NCPD vehicles, and incompatible models cannot have their paint scheme cloned. CrystalCoat can also help lower an active wanted level on supported vehicles by changing the car's appearance. The system is much more flexible than it was at launch, but it still focuses on cosmetic paint rather than mechanical performance tuning.

Which Vehicles Have Built-In Weapons?

Update 2.0 introduced proper vehicle combat and added vehicles with mounted weapons. AUTOFIXER marks armed models with a special icon, making it possible to distinguish them from ordinary civilian cars before purchasing. Depending on the model, the built-in equipment can include machine guns or other vehicle weapons, while V can also use certain personal weapons during normal driving. Phantom Liberty expands this side of the game further through Dogtown vehicles and contracts.Weaponized vehicles are not required for normal open-world travel, but they are especially useful during chases and hostile vehicle encounters. Update 2.0 also added vehicle-related perks that improve abilities such as combat handling, collision damage, weapon effectiveness, and vehicle quickhacking. Motorcycles have their own combat options and allow V to use melee attacks while riding. If you want a combat-focused vehicle, check the weapon icon in AUTOFIXER instead of buying solely on speed or appearance.
In the current Cyberpunk 2077, permanent vehicles come from AUTOFIXER purchases, quests, exploration rewards, and specific scripted acquisitions. Random cars stolen from traffic cannot be added permanently to V's collection. Buy vehicles through AUTOFIXER, increase Street Cred to unlock more models, hold the vehicle-call button to choose an owned car, and use AutoDrive or the Delamain taxi service when you do not want to drive manually. Compatible vehicles can also use CrystalCoat and TWINTONE for modern paint customization.
