Fishing in Valheim has changed significantly since the game's early-access launch. What used to be a simple side activity with a single bait type has grown into a full progression system with 12 species of fish, biome-specific bait, fish quality levels, a Fishing skill, special recipes, and the Fishing Hat.Valheim 1.0 launched in September 2026 and opened the Deep North, making Northern Salmon properly obtainable and adding new fish-based endgame foods such as Fish Soup and Smoked Fish. In this guide, we'll explain where to get a Fishing Rod, how bait works, how to catch fish efficiently, which fish live in each biome, and what you can cook from your catch.
How to Get a Fishing Rod in Valheim
The easiest way to obtain a Fishing Rod is still to buy one from Haldor, the merchant found in the Black Forest. The rod costs 350 Coins. If you have not found Haldor yet, check our guide to valuables, Coins, and the merchant.Unlike in the original version of this guide, the Fishing Rod is no longer available exclusively from Haldor. A rod can also appear in a very rare Frost Cave room containing a frozen lake. If you find one there, several pieces of basic Fishing Bait may spawn with it.Where to Get a Fishing Rod in ValheimWhere to Get a Fishing Rod in Valheim

How to Fish in Valheim
Fishing looks simple, but stamina management becomes increasingly important when you start hunting larger fish in later biomes. How to Fish in ValheimHow to Fish in ValheimOn PC, the basic sequence is:
Equip the Fishing Rod.
Choose the bait you want to use by right-clicking it in your inventory.
Hold the left mouse button to charge the cast. Release it to throw the line. A fully charged cast can reach roughly 30 meters.
Wait until a fish reaches the bobber and pulls it underwater.
Press the right mouse button quickly to hook the fish.
Hold the right mouse button to reel it in.
Once the fish is within roughly one or two meters, look at it and use the interaction key to pick it up.
Fishing consumes stamina while reeling. A hooked fish alternates between calmer periods and struggle phases. Reeling during a struggle drains much more stamina, especially with large, high-quality fish.If your stamina reaches zero before the fish is under control, it can escape.
How to Catch Fish Without Wasting Stamina
Before fishing, eat stamina-focused food and make sure you have the Rested buff whenever possible.Several simple tricks make fishing much easier:
Use shorter casts. The closer the fish is when hooked, the less line you need to reel in.
Do not reel aggressively while the fish is struggling. Wait for it to calm down, then continue.
Walk backward toward the shore. The line length remains locked while a fish is hooked, so moving away from the water can drag the fish closer without the same stamina cost as constant reeling.
Fish from shallow shores when possible. This shortens the distance and can make the final pickup much easier.
Bring stamina mead for difficult fish. Later-biome species can consume a lot of stamina.
Fishing Skill: What It Does
Fishing now has its own player skill.Every level:
Increases reeling speed by approximately 2%.
Reduces fishing stamina consumption by approximately 0.8%.
At very high Fishing skill, you can reel in fish much faster while spending dramatically less stamina. You gain Fishing experience while actively reeling the line. Reeling with a fish hooked grants more experience than reeling an empty line.
Fish Quality Levels
Fish can spawn at quality levels 1 through 5. Higher-quality fish are physically larger, weigh more, are harder to reel in, and produce more Raw Fish when processed.Do not assume that a quality 1 and quality 5 fish are effectively the same catch. Large fish can drain much more stamina, so high Fishing skill and stamina food become increasingly valuable when hunting trophy-sized specimens.
All Fish in Valheim and Where to Catch Them
There are currently 12 fish species.
Perch — Meadows and Black Forest. Use Fishing Bait.
Pike — Meadows and Black Forest. Use Fishing Bait.
Trollfish — Black Forest shores. Use Mossy Fishing Bait.
Giant Herring — Swamp shores. Use Sticky Fishing Bait.
Anglerfish — Mistlands shores. Use Misty Fishing Bait.
Pufferfish — deep water around the Mistlands and Ocean. Use Misty Fishing Bait.

Some fish can also provide bonus resources when caught with a rod. These drops vary by species and can include materials such as ore, Sap, Soft Tissue, Black Metal Scrap, or other biome resources.
How to Turn Fish into Raw Fish
Caught fish are not automatically converted into generic food anymore.Use a Food Preparation Table to turn a caught fish into Raw Fish. The amount you receive depends on the species and quality level. Large high-quality fish produce substantially more Raw Fish than small quality 1 catches.Raw Fish can then be cooked on a Cooking Station or used in later recipes.

Best Fishing Tips in 2026
Buy the Fishing Rod and a large supply of basic bait as soon as you find Haldor.
Build a Food Preparation Table before trying to progress through the specialized bait system.
Use short casts whenever possible to save stamina.
Eat stamina food before targeting large fish.
Stop or slow down reeling while a fish is struggling.
Save Anglerfish for Fish 'n' Bread instead of immediately processing every catch into Raw Fish.
Keep at least one of every fish species if you want to craft the Fishing Hat.
Once you reach the Deep North, Raw Fish becomes useful again for high-end Eitr foods such as Fish Soup and Smoked Fish.
Fishing is still an optional activity in Valheim, but by 1.0 it has become much deeper than it was at launch. The system now rewards biome progression, trophy hunting, Cooking development, and collecting every species, while also providing useful food and several unique consumables.
