How to Increase Carry Weight in ValheimInventory management has always been one of the biggest limitations in Valheim, especially when you start mining ore or hauling heavy materials over long distances. The problem becomes particularly noticeable in the Mountains, where each Dragon Egg weighs 200 and you need three of them to summon Moder. The old version of this guide described Megingjord as the only way to increase carry weight. That is no longer true. In the current 1.0 version of Valheim, you can permanently increase your normal carrying capacity with Megingjord and temporarily raise it much higher with Moder's Forsaken Power and Mead of Troll Endurance. Valheim 1.0 also introduced permanent pocket upgrades, although those increase inventory space rather than weight.

How Carry Weight Works in Valheim

Every character starts with a maximum carry weight of 300.If the total weight of the items in your inventory exceeds that number, you become Encumbered. You can still move for a short time, but walking drains Stamina, Stamina does not regenerate while you are moving, and you cannot run, jump, dodge, or block normally. The simplest permanent solution is still Megingjord.

How to Get Megingjord and Increase Carry Weight to 450

Megingjord is a belt sold by Haldor, the merchant who appears in the Black Forest. The belt costs 950 Coins and is available as soon as you find him. You do not need to defeat a specific boss before buying it.

Equip Megingjord in your accessory slot. While it is equipped, your maximum carry weight increases by 150, taking the normal limit from 300 to 450.The belt is especially useful during mining trips because ore and metal are among the heaviest materials in the game. There is one important limitation. Megingjord uses the same accessory slot as the Wishbone and Wisplight. This means you cannot benefit from the belt while using the Wishbone to locate Silver or while using the Wisplight to clear Mistlands fog.For Mountain mining, a common strategy is to use the Wishbone to locate a Silver vein, mark the location, then equip Megingjord while carrying the ore back.

How to Increase Carry Weight With Moder's Power

The Call to Arms update changed Moder's Forsaken Power considerably. After defeating Moder and hanging her trophy at the Sacrificial Stones, you can activate her power. In the current version of the game, Moder's power increases maximum carry weight by 300 for five minutes. It also provides additional movement-related benefits, including increased movement speed and Frost resistance, while retaining its usefulness for sailing. With only the normal 300 carry weight, activating Moder's power raises your limit to 600.If you are also wearing Megingjord, the two effects stack and raise your carry weight to 750.

How to Make Mead of Troll Endurance

Another temporary carry-weight bonus comes from Mead of Troll Endurance.Drinking one increases maximum carry weight by 250 for five minutes. The effect has a two-minute cooldown. To make the mead, first prepare Mead Base: Troll Endurance using 2 Trollfish, 10 Honey, and 1 Powdered Dragon Eggshells. The base is then fermented into six bottles.Powdered Dragon Eggshells are sold by the Bog Witch in the Swamp. Five pieces cost 120 Coins.Because the recipe also requires Trollfish, this is not an early-game replacement for Megingjord. It is more useful later when you already have fishing equipment, access to the Bog Witch, and a working mead setup.Megingjord and Mead of Troll Endurance stack. Wearing the belt and drinking the mead raises your carry weight from 300 to 700.If you also activate Moder's Forsaken Power, the practical carry limit becomes 1,000 for five minutes.

What Is the Maximum Carry Weight in Valheim?

Under normal planned conditions, the highest useful carry weight is 1,000.That total comes from the standard 300 carry weight, +150 from Megingjord, +300 from Moder's Forsaken Power, and +250 from Mead of Troll Endurance. There is technically one way to push the number even higher. After recovering your grave, the temporary Corpse Run effect adds another 150 carry weight. If it overlaps with all the bonuses above, the theoretical maximum becomes 1,150.Corpse Run only lasts for a short time and exists to help you escape after recovering your equipment, so it is not a practical hauling method.

Wider Pockets and Deeper Pockets in Valheim 1.0

Valheim 1.0 introduced two permanent inventory upgrades sold by Haldor: Wider Pockets and Deeper Pockets. These upgrades are easy to confuse with carry-weight bonuses, but they work differently.Wider Pockets becomes available after defeating Moder. It costs 1,000 Coins and permanently adds one inventory row, or 8 slots, to the character.Deeper Pockets becomes available after defeating The Queen. It costs 2,000 Coins and permanently adds another row of 8 slots.Buying both increases the normal inventory from 32 slots to 48 slots. The upgrades do not increase carry weight. You can have 48 available inventory slots and still become Encumbered after exceeding the same weight limit. That distinction matters when gathering heavy resources. Wider Pockets and Deeper Pockets are excellent for exploration, food, tools, trophies, arrows, and mixed loot. Megingjord, Moder's power, and Mead of Troll Endurance are what actually help when the problem is weight.

How to Transport Heavy Materials Without Carrying Everything Yourself

Increasing carry weight is useful, but you should not try to move an entire mining operation on your back. For large quantities of Copper, Tin, Iron, Silver, Black Metal, Flametal, and other heavy resources, use a Cart on land whenever the terrain allows it. A Cart can carry far more material than your character, although it becomes increasingly difficult to pull as its cargo gets heavier and the terrain gets steeper. For long-distance transport, ships are even better. Ore that cannot pass through a normal Portal can be loaded into a ship and transported by sea.Megingjord is therefore best treated as a personal hauling upgrade rather than a replacement for proper logistics.

What Is the Best Way to Increase Carry Weight?

For most of the game, Megingjord remains the most important upgrade. It is available relatively early, costs only 950 Coins, works permanently while equipped, and raises the limit from 300 to 450 without consuming anything.Once you defeat Moder, her Forsaken Power becomes the best option for short heavy-hauling trips. Mead of Troll Endurance can push the limit even higher, especially when moving large amounts of ore between a mine, Cart, ship, and base.Meanwhile, the new Valheim 1.0 pocket upgrades solve a different problem by increasing inventory slots rather than weight.
In Valheim 1.0, your base carry weight is 300. Megingjord raises it permanently to 450 while equipped. Moder's Forsaken Power adds 300 for five minutes, and Mead of Troll Endurance adds another 250. Used together, these effects let you carry up to 1,000 weight under normal conditions. Wider Pockets and Deeper Pockets increase inventory space to 48 slots, but do not increase carry weight.
