Cloud Imperium Games has moved Squadron 42 from its planned late-2026 release window to Q2 2027. Chris Roberts said the decision was driven largely by timing rather than a new technical setback, with Grand Theft Auto 6 currently scheduled for November 19, 2026.
Roberts explained the move in a Letter from the Chairman. The original plan was to release Squadron 42 in Q4 around the Intergalactic Aerospace Expo, but the studio decided that launching so close to GTA 6 would leave too little room for press, creators, and the wider gaming audience to focus on another major release. Roberts described Squadron 42 as his "spiritual successor to Wing Commander" and said he did not want twelve years of work to disappear into GTA 6's media cycle. At the same time, Cloud Imperium began opening the game to a limited external group. Selected original backers and long-time Star Citizen content creators were invited to play Squadron 42 in Manchester on October 9 and 10. Roberts said more release information would be shared around these sessions and that a specific launch date would follow shortly afterward.Squadron 42 has also received an official Steam page, which currently lists a Q2 2027 release window and allows players to add the game to their wishlist. The project features a cast that includes Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Henry Cavill, Gillian Anderson, and other well-known actors. Star Citizen's broader crowdfunding total has now passed $1 billion, although that figure covers the wider Star Citizen project and should not be treated as Squadron 42's standalone development budget.
