According to Halo insider Rebs Gaming, Activision's plans for the franchise have changed significantly. The company initially considered a hybrid approach with a separate free-to-play multiplayer game and a full single-player campaign developed by another team. The focus has reportedly shifted toward one larger project that would reintroduce the Halo universe to a broader audience. Sledgehammer Games, the studio behind Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and Modern Warfare III, is said to have conceptualized and prototyped basic gameplay mechanics for the project. Those early prototypes reportedly used Infinity Ward's proprietary engine to quickly test core movement and gunplay.
The biggest question is how far the project could move away from established canon. Earlier plans reportedly involved a soft reboot, but Activision is now said to be considering a complete restart. One possibility is a new take on Master Chief's origins, covering his early years, the first trials of the SPARTAN-II program, and the path that turned him into the legendary supersoldier. Such an approach could make the story easier to follow for newcomers who are unfamiliar with decades of novels, comics, and animated projects. For longtime fans, that prospect is both worrying and potentially exciting. A reboot could offer a cleaner entry point into Halo without requiring players to know a huge amount of expanded-universe material just to follow the plot. Insider reports also suggest multiplayer would remain a major part of the project and would be developed as part of a single complete game rather than as a separate service.
