Where to start if The Witcher 3 Remastered is stuttering or crashing
First, make sure you are actually troubleshooting Remastered, released on September 29, 2026, rather than the version created by the 2022 Next-Gen Update. On PC, Remastered uses an exclusively DirectX 12 renderer and has updated system requirements. Old recommendations about switching to DX11 or replacing libraries from the Next-Gen build should not automatically be applied to the new version. We recommend checking game updates first, then moving on to Windows settings or driver reinstalls. For troubleshooting, choose one save and one short route where the problem is easy to reproduce. Repeat the same section after every change while keeping the resolution and graphics settings consistent. This will not guarantee an instant fix, but it makes it much easier to identify what actually changed the result. If you disable ten settings at once, you will have no idea which one mattered.- Install every available game update through your launcher.
- Update to a compatible graphics driver unless the problem started immediately after a driver update.
- For a baseline test, disable HairWorks, Ray Tracing, Path Tracing, and Frame Generation.
- Verify the integrity of the game files.
- Temporarily disable optional overlays and test the game without user mods.
- Repeat the problem area and check whether the stuttering or crashes still occur.
Update the game to hotfix 5.00c or newer
Hotfix 5.00c was released on October 1 for the PC versions on Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, and Xbox Play Anywhere. CD Projekt RED reverted a change that had caused significant performance and visual issues with HairWorks enabled for some players. The patch also fixed saving and loading when the path to the Documents folder contained special characters. If you experienced either problem on the launch build, updating the game should be your first step.Patch 5.00b separately fixed an issue that made DLSS unavailable in the PC Xbox Play Anywhere version. If the DLSS option is missing or grayed out on that version, do not immediately assume there is a problem with your graphics card. Install every available update and restart the game first. DLSS still requires compatible hardware, of course. The patch does not make the technology available on every GPU.How to improve low FPS
Start by separating consistently low performance from intermittent instability. If the game is always slow, reduce rendering load first. If it normally runs smoothly but periodically freezes or hitches, also use the stuttering section below. For troubleshooting, our baseline uses Ray Tracing, Path Tracing, and HairWorks disabled with a more moderate graphics preset. This is a diagnostic starting point, not a universal best-settings profile for every PC.Disable Path Tracing first, then Ray Tracing, and repeat the exact same test route. After that, lower the resolution or enable an available upscaler. If FPS rises significantly, the rendering workload is clearly a major factor, although that does not rule out other bottlenecks. Do not immediately turn everything back to maximum just because one quiet area now performs well.On a compatible GeForce RTX GPU, start with DLSS Quality and then try Balanced if you need more performance. Radeon owners should use the available FSR option. Remastered officially supports FSR 4 on Radeon RX 7000 Series and newer cards, while unsupported GPUs fall back to FSR 2. The absence of FSR 4 on an older Radeon is therefore not an installation error by itself.Once you have a stable baseline, restore visual features one at a time. Frame Generation is best enabled last so it does not make comparisons of base performance harder. A higher displayed frame rate with Frame Generation does not prove that the underlying cause of freezes or latency has disappeared. For a deeper graphics setup, see our The Witcher 3 Remastered graphics settings guide.Should you disable NVIDIA HairWorks?
While troubleshooting performance drops, we recommend temporarily turning HairWorks off regardless of your GPU brand. Before hotfix 5.00c, the developers specifically advised disabling it because of a confirmed issue. After 5.00c, however, it would be inaccurate to claim that the same launch bug necessarily affects everyone. Update the game, compare the same scene with HairWorks enabled and disabled, and decide whether the visual effect is worth the performance cost on your PC.GeForce RTX 50 Series cards also support the new Linear-Swept Spheres path-traced HairWorks rendering used by Remastered. This is not required for the game to function correctly. For a baseline stability test, it is better to keep the demanding hair rendering features disabled. Once the game is stable, you can evaluate the visual difference and performance cost separately. How to reduce stuttering and short freezes
Check which drive the game is installed on. Remastered's current PC requirements specify an SSD, so running the game from a mechanical hard drive falls outside the stated configuration. If it is installed on an HDD, move it to an SSD using your launcher and repeat the same problem area. Do not assume that storage alone explains every hitch, however, because stuttering can have several causes. For the next test, disable the Discord overlay, launcher overlays, and other optional software that draws over the game. Close unnecessary applications and background downloads while leaving required Windows services alone. This follows the general troubleshooting approach recommended by CD Projekt RED support. If performance improves, restore programs one at a time until you find the conflict. If stuttering began after installing mods, test a clean launch without them. Back up your saves and mod list first, then disable the modifications using the method supported by your mod manager. Do not overwrite your only valuable save while testing, especially if it depends on modded content. Verifying files restores official game data, but it is not a universal way to disable every third-party modification.AMD Radeon problems: drivers, artifacts, and timeouts
AMD added support for the current Witcher 3 update in Adrenalin 26.9.2. Make sure you install a compatible package for your exact GPU rather than simply choosing the driver with the highest version number. The supported-device list is included in AMD's release notes. Older Radeon cards, laptops, and handheld PCs may require a different package or the system manufacturer's driver recommendations. If you see artifacts or driver timeout messages, start by installing the correct current driver and testing without Ray Tracing or Path Tracing. This is a troubleshooting recommendation, not proof of a universal Radeon defect in Remastered. AMD's 26.9.2 notes include a rollback recommendation for a specific War Thunder issue. That should not be copied over to The Witcher 3 as a mandatory fix.If the problem on your PC began immediately after changing drivers, testing the previous compatible version that worked normally is reasonable. For a clean uninstall before reinstalling or rolling back, CD Projekt RED support points AMD users toward AMD Cleanup Utility. Download the required driver package in advance and follow the utility's instructions instead of manually deleting driver files from Windows.NVIDIA GeForce problems: drivers and missing DLSS
Game Ready Driver 617.14, released on September 22, includes support for The Witcher 3 Remastered. If your installed driver is significantly older, check the latest compatible version through the NVIDIA App or NVIDIA's official website. Laptop owners should also consider their manufacturer's recommendations. Updating the driver can help, but it does not replace game patches and does not make heavy Path Tracing settings suitable for every GPU.Do not confuse DLSS Super Resolution, Frame Generation, and Multi Frame Generation. These are separate features with different hardware requirements. In Remastered, NVIDIA lists Frame Generation support for GeForce RTX 40 and RTX 50 Series GPUs, while Dynamic Multi Frame Generation is an RTX 50 Series feature. Having DLSS Super Resolution on an RTX 20 or RTX 30 card does not mean the same Frame Generation options should appear there. If Frame Generation is unavailable on otherwise compatible hardware, check Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling in Windows graphics settings. CD Projekt RED support lists it as a requirement for DLSS Frame Generation. Restart the PC after changing the setting. We do not recommend forcing the feature through random registry edits or replacing game DLLs to bypass hardware restrictions. If crashes continue after a normal driver update, you can move on to a clean reinstall. CD Projekt RED's NVIDIA troubleshooting instructions describe removing the previous driver with Display Driver Uninstaller and then installing a driver package downloaded in advance. This is a more invasive diagnostic step, so check the game version, patches, and ordinary driver update first. Follow the official tool instructions instead of using an unknown all-in-one optimizer. What to do if the game crashes on startup or while loading
Verify the game files in the launcher you use. Corrupted data can cause crashes, graphical problems, and startup failures. Wait until the verification and repair process finishes, then repeat the test. If the issue only occurs on one save, try an earlier save without deleting the original.- Steam - open the game's Properties, go to Installed Files, and run Verify integrity of game files.
- GOG GALAXY - select the game, open Manage Installation, and use Verify / Repair.
- Epic Games Launcher - click the three dots next to the game, open Manage, and select Verify.
- Battle.net - open the cogwheel menu beside the Play button and choose Scan and Repair.
Save and load problems after the update
If Remastered cannot save or load progress, install hotfix 5.00c or any newer available patch first. It includes a specific fix for Documents paths containing special characters. That does not mean every already damaged save file is automatically repaired. Update the game and test your existing saves before renaming your Windows profile or deleting the progress folder. The default save location is %userprofile%\Documents\The Witcher 3\gamesaves. If Documents has been redirected, the real path may be different. Find your saves and make a separate backup before reinstalling the game or switching versions. If an older save loads normally, keep the problematic one for troubleshooting instead of replacing your entire progress history with a new test file. Why the "run the game in DX11" fix does not apply to Remastered
The PC version of Remastered uses DirectX 12 exclusively. Returning to an earlier game release is a separate option, not a renderer toggle for fixing the new version. Depending on the storefront, CD Projekt RED provides access to earlier Classic 1.32 and Next-Gen 4.04 branches. Those are options for players whose hardware or mod setup is better suited to an older release, but you will no longer be running the same Remastered build.Back up your saves before rolling back. Do not assume a save created by a newer version will work in an older one. If your issue is caused by a mod or driver, changing game branches also does not replace proper troubleshooting. We recommend treating rollback as an option after checking updates and requirements rather than as the first thing to try. When to contact CD Projekt RED support
If the game continues to crash after updating, verifying files, and testing without modifications, collect information for CD Projekt RED support. Include the game version, storefront, CPU and GPU models, driver version, and exact steps that lead to the crash. If the problem happens in one specific area, attach the relevant save and, if possible, a short recording. A reproducible report is much more useful than simply saying the game crashes. You can create a system report with DxDiag. Press Win+R, enter dxdiag, wait for the information to load, and choose Save All Information. Submit the report through the official support form rather than posting personal system data publicly. Attach only the files relevant to the problem instead of uploading your entire Documents folder.Sign in to leave a comment or rate this post.
