In The Witcher 3 Remastered, old builds from version 4.04 can no longer be copied over one for one. CD Projekt RED completely reworked the skill tree: abilities now have prerequisites, every skill has three ranks, and many old bonuses have been changed or moved to different branches. That means a decade-old screenshot of the most broken Euphoria build is useful only as a rough idea. Geralt has to be rebuilt from scratch.
The good news is that the core playstyles are still here. Fast and Strong Attacks, Signs, alchemy, and witcher gear still work extremely well together, but Remastered rewards proper synergy much more than simply stacking a handful of formerly overpowered skills. Below are four builds we recommend for different playstyles, including Death March!.If you are still getting used to the new tree and have no idea where to spend your first points, start with our guide to the best skills in The Witcher 3 Remastered.
Euphoria: the best all-around sword and alchemy build
The Witcher 3 RemasteredThe Witcher 3 RemasteredIf you want a single setup that performs well in almost any endgame content, we still recommend Euphoria. This mutation turns Toxicity into additional sword damage and Sign Intensity, so decoctions and potions strengthen Geralt in several ways at once. The old setup had to be rebuilt after the Remastered rebalance, but the basic idea remains the same: keep Toxicity high, support yourself with alchemy, and deal most of your damage with swords.Grandmaster Manticore gear is the best fit for this setup, although you can also use a more aggressive combination built around light armor. In the Combat tree, work toward Whirl and Rend: Whirl tears through groups, while Rend is excellent for punishing bosses during short openings. In Alchemy, Acquired Tolerance, High Tolerance, Protective Coating, and other skills that make high Toxicity safer are especially useful.
Mutation: Euphoria.
Armor: Manticore School gear. Alternatively, use Feline gear or a mixed set focused on critical damage.
Weapons: Aerondight for monsters, plus a strong relic or witcher steel sword for human enemies.
Best for: endgame, Death March!, and players who actively use potions and decoctions.
Before a serious fight, drink two or three suitable decoctions, apply the right oil, and only then engage. We do not recommend chasing maximum Toxicity just to inflate the number on the character sheet. If the meter is already draining your Vitality and preventing you from using Swallow or White Honey when needed, a few extra percentage points of damage are not worth it.
Bloodbath: the best pure sword build
The Witcher 3 RemasteredThe Witcher 3 RemasteredIf opening the alchemy menu only makes you want to close it again and draw your sword, go with Bloodbath. Each successful melee hit gradually increases Attack Power until the fight ends, while taking damage resets the accumulated bonus. That defines the entire playstyle: stay mobile, dodge, avoid unnecessary hits, and let your damage build over the course of the fight.Remastered works especially well with strings of Fast Attacks followed by a heavy finisher. Keep Whirl for groups and Rend for large single targets, while Razor Focus, Resolve, and Undying help you make better use of Adrenaline. We recommend Feline School gear as the foundation if you are confident in your dodges, or Wolven gear if you want a more forgiving hybrid setup.
Mutation: Bloodbath.
Armor: Feline School gear for maximum pressure or Wolven School gear for a more balanced hybrid.
Best for: players who want to focus on sword combat without constantly managing Toxicity.
The main thing is not to turn Whirl into a button you simply hold until everything dies. Against shield users, large monsters, and enemies with punishing counterattacks, it is much better to wait for an opening, land a short combo, and move back out of range. As long as you avoid taking damage, Bloodbath keeps making every following attack more dangerous.
Griffin School: the best Sign build
A Sign-focused Geralt is more interesting in Remastered mainly because of the new skill tree and the synergies between different Signs. We do not recommend trying to level Aard, Igni, Quen, Yrden, and Axii equally. It is much more effective to choose a primary combination and keep the remaining Signs as tools for specific situations. The most reliable setup right now is built around Yrden. Cast Magic Trap, keep enemies inside the field, follow up with Igni or Aard, and refresh Quen when needed. Grandmaster Griffin gear is perfect for this playstyle, and in the late game you can pick Magic Sensibilities to let Signs deal critical hits. If you especially enjoy Aard, Piercing Cold is a strong alternative.
Mutation: Magic Sensibilities. For an Aard-focused build, use Piercing Cold.
Armor: full Griffin School set.
Mutagens: Greater Blue Mutagens.
Core skills: Magic Trap, Supercharged Glyphs, Melt Armor, Firestream, Exploding Shield or Active Shield, Far-Reaching Aard, Resonance.
Best for: crowd control, safer play on high difficulties, and players who enjoy Signs.
Start fights with Quen, then place Yrden and force enemies to fight on your terms. Do not spam Signs the instant your Stamina recovers. Sometimes it is better to wait a second for an enemy to step back into the trap, then hit them with Aard or Igni. This version of Geralt wins not by casting as often as possible, but by making sure half the enemies can barely reach him for most of the fight.
Ursine School: the best build for Death March! and survivability
The Witcher 3 RemasteredThe Witcher 3 RemasteredUrsine School gear remains an excellent choice if surviving a mistake matters more to you than squeezing out another ten percent of damage. Heavy armor provides strong resistances, Strong Attacks pair well with Adrenaline, and Quen gives you another layer of protection. On Death March!, this build is especially comfortable against monsters that can tear through a lightly armored Geralt in just a couple of bad hits.Build your main damage around Strong Attacks and Rend. Quen is enough on the Sign side, while spare points are better invested in Adrenaline and defense. In the late game, the Mutated Skin mutation works particularly well: accumulated Adrenaline Points further reduce incoming damage, making the build extremely durable in longer fights.
Mutation: Mutated Skin. Euphoria is a more aggressive alternative.
Best for: Death March!, bosses, and players who prefer heavy hits and a large margin for error.
Playing a tank in The Witcher still does not mean standing in front of an archgriffin and trading blows face first. Treat the extra defense as permission to make one mistake: survive the hit, refresh Quen, recover, and wait for another opening to use Rend. This way, an Ursine build still deals solid damage without forcing you to reload after every mistimed dodge.
Which build should you choose early in the game?
Mutations only become available in Toussaint through the Blood and Wine expansion, so there is no point in building your character around Euphoria or Bloodbath during the first few dozen hours. Early on, we recommend choosing one attack type, adding Quen, and avoiding the temptation to scatter points across the entire tree. The easiest starting setup is Fast Attacks, Quen, and the first suitable witcher gear you can get. Once you reach Velen, you can move toward Griffin School gear for a Sign build, then switch to Feline later if you want more sword damage. Ursine gear becomes available considerably later in Skellige, so it is better viewed as a transition into the midgame rather than a starting build.Installing Remastered automatically resets skills on an old save because of the redesigned system. If you return with a level 40 character, do not immediately spend every point from memory. Pick one of the builds above first, then follow the new prerequisite paths toward its key skills.
What is the strongest build?
The Witcher 3 RemasteredThe Witcher 3 RemasteredIn terms of overall late-game performance, we would still put Euphoria in first place. It offers one of the highest damage ceilings while also letting you take advantage of powerful decoctions, oils, and potions. The tradeoff is that you need to understand the alchemy system and constantly keep an eye on Toxicity. If you just want to draw your sword and head out on contracts, we recommend Bloodbath. For a more forgiving Death March! run, use Ursine gear with Mutated Skin. If you are tired of sword-focused builds, Griffin gear built around Yrden and Magic Sensibilities changes the rhythm of combat entirely and, in our view, remains one of the most interesting ways to replay Remastered.Do not forget about the new transmogrification system either. Wearing the gear that best fits your build no longer means staring at the same armor for the entire game. If you like the stats on Feline or Griffin gear but not the appearance, you can change how it looks. We explain the system in more detail in our guide to transmogrification and reforging.
