Season 15 of Diablo 4 introduced a new system of seasonal socketables called Soul Splinters. There are eight types in total, and each provides a powerful bonus paired with a significant drawback. One increases Attack Speed but raises Primary Resource Costs, another greatly reduces incoming damage at the cost of Movement Speed, while a third removes your Critical Strike Chance entirely in exchange for a direct damage multiplier.In this guide, we'll cover all eight Soul Splinters, how to farm them, and the current effects of their Unique versions in patch 3.2.1. We'll also explain which options we recommend for general builds and which are better reserved for specific setups or farming.

How Soul Splinters Work

Soul Splinters are socketed into Jewelry, meaning your Amulet and two Rings. You can equip up to three different Splinters at once, and you cannot equip two copies of the same type. Leoric's Crown also interacts with the system by counting as Jewelry, allowing Soul Splinters to be placed in the helm's sockets. This is why some endgame builds use Splinters there instead.Each Splinter is tied to a particular demon or artifact and replaces a regular gem. In addition to its unique effect, it grants Resistance to a specific damage type. The exceptions are Splinter of Hellfire, which provides Resistance to All Elements, and Splinter of the Black Soulstone, which increases All Stats.Do not confuse them with the Splinters of Evil tied to Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto. That is a completely separate Season 15 system connected to the Prime Evils' Iconic Powers and War Plans progression. If that's the system you're looking for, we've already covered it in our separate guide to Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto's powers.

Soul Splinter Rarities and How to Upgrade Them

Soul Splinters come in four rarity tiers: Magic, Rare, Legendary, and Unique. The higher the rarity, the stronger the positive effect and Resistance bonus, while the main drawback usually remains unchanged.Upgrading is done through the Horadric Cube using Amalgamation. Five identical Splinters of the same type and rarity combine into one Splinter of the next rarity. Because of this, we don't recommend discarding weaker versions simply because they don't immediately fit your build. Five copies can still be used for the next upgrade tier, and crafting a Unique Soul Splinter from scratch requires a large number of duplicates.

Where to Find Soul Splinters

The easiest way to target farm them is through Nightmare Dungeons with a specific Gem Reserve affix. Gem Reserve chests inside these dungeons can also drop the Soul Splinter associated with that gem. Seven of the eight types can be targeted fairly reliably:
  • Splinter of Anguish: Ruby Reserve;
  • Splinter of Sin: Topaz Reserve;
  • Splinter of Lies: Sapphire Reserve;
  • Splinter of Pain: Emerald Reserve;
  • Splinter of Damnation: Amethyst Reserve;
  • Splinter of Hellfire: Diamond Reserve;
  • Splinter of the Mother: Skull Reserve.
We recommend using Escalation Sigils together with the War Plans node that adds extra portal choices between floors. This gives you a much better chance of seeing the Gem Reserve you need instead of relying entirely on random drops. Splinter of the Black Soulstone is not reliably tied to a specific Gem Reserve, so it cannot be consistently target farmed this way.There are alternatives. In Kurast Undercity, a Cabochon Merchant can sell Soul Splinters if you unlock the appropriate War Plans node and encounter the right goblin. High-level Prime Evil encounters can also drop Unique Soul Splinters directly, allowing you to skip the long Horadric Cube upgrade chain. If you're after one specific Splinter, however, we still recommend starting with Nightmare Dungeons because they at least let you influence the type of loot you receive.

Splinter of Anguish: Andariel

Unique effect: +20% Attack Speed and Critical Strike Chance, but Primary Resource Costs are increased by 30%. The Splinter also provides Fire Resistance.This is one of the most versatile offensive choices of the season. We recommend Splinter of Anguish for most fast-attacking and Critical Strike builds, as long as your character already has reliable Mana, Fury, Essence, or other Primary Resource recovery. The drawback is much more noticeable early on, so don't equip it just for the attractive +20% bonus if it leaves you making two attacks and then waiting ten seconds for your resource to recover.

Splinter of Sin: Azmodan

Unique effect: Maximum Life is increased by 50%, but Maximum Primary Resource is reduced by 30%. The Splinter also provides Lightning Resistance.This is an excellent defensive choice for builds that barely care about their resource pool size. If your setup restores resources quickly, uses free skills, or simply doesn't depend on having a large Mana or Fury pool, the extra 50% Life provides a huge survivability boost. For builds whose damage or core mechanics scale directly with Maximum Resource, however, we recommend choosing something else.

Splinter of Lies: Belial

Unique effect: Gold and Crafting Material drop rates are increased by 100%, and you gain 25% Bonus Experience from kills, but you are permanently Weakened and Vulnerable. The Splinter also provides Cold Resistance.This is purely a farming option. Permanent Vulnerable can quickly remind you why Belial should never be trusted if you're pushing a difficult Pit tier or fighting dangerous bosses. On a comfortable difficulty, however, the bonus Gold, materials, and Experience are excellent. We recommend keeping Splinter of Lies specifically for leveling and fast farming in content your character can already clear without trouble.

Splinter of the Black Soulstone

Unique effect: after killing an enemy, your character absorbs its soul for 10 seconds. Each soul increases your damage dealt by 2.5% but also increases your damage taken by 1%. The effect stacks up to 200 times and does not refresh the duration of existing stacks. Instead of Resistance, the Unique version grants +50 All Stats.The numbers look absurd on paper, but it's important to remember the second half of the effect. Your damage rises extremely quickly in dense enemy packs, but so does the risk of dying to the first serious hit. We recommend Splinter of the Black Soulstone for fast clears and builds that can kill enemies before they have a chance to retaliate. Against a tough boss with no steady supply of additional targets, the effect is considerably less useful.

Splinter of Pain: Duriel

Unique effect: Damage Taken is reduced by 25%, but Movement Speed is reduced by 30%. The Splinter also provides Poison Resistance.This is a simple and extremely powerful defensive option. A 25% reduction to incoming damage is useful for almost any character, which is why Splinter of Pain regularly appears in endgame builds. The main drawback is the loss of mobility. If your build is already slow, it can make the character unpleasant to play. We recommend compensating for the penalty with Boots, movement skills, or other Movement Speed bonuses.

Splinter of the Mother: Lilith

Unique effect: you become Unhindered, and touching enemies makes them Vulnerable for 10 seconds. After touching 250 enemies, you are Stunned for 4 seconds. The Splinter also provides Physical Resistance.This is a very specialized option. Being able to pass through enemies and automatically apply Vulnerable sounds useful against dense packs, but the guaranteed four-second Stun can trigger at the worst possible moment. We recommend Splinter of the Mother only for builds that genuinely need this mechanic. It's difficult to call it a universal choice.

Splinter of Hellfire: Na-Krul

Unique effect: damage dealt is increased by 50%, but you lose 100% Critical Strike Chance. The Splinter also provides Resistance to All Elements.Everything depends on the build here. If Critical Strikes are the foundation of your damage, Splinter of Hellfire effectively breaks the build, and the 50% bonus does not make up for it. Damage over Time builds, setups with guaranteed Critical Strikes, or other mechanics that do not rely on normal Critical Strike Chance can get an enormous multiplier with almost no meaningful downside. We recommend checking exactly where your build's damage comes from before socketing this Splinter.

Splinter of Damnation: Skarn

Unique effect: after killing a group of special enemies, Monster Power increases by 1 and Experience gained increases by 25% for 25 seconds. The Splinter also provides Shadow Resistance.This is another option primarily intended for leveling and farming. The Splinter makes subsequent fights harder, but rewards you with more Experience while you continue clearing Elite packs quickly. We recommend using it in content your character already handles comfortably. Trying to push your absolute difficulty limit while voluntarily making monsters stronger is usually not the best idea.

Which Soul Splinters Are the Best?

There is no single option you can mindlessly equip in every build because the entire system is designed around tradeoffs. Still, several Splinters are noticeably more versatile than the others.For most offensive builds, we'd look at Splinter of Anguish first. Attack Speed and Critical Strike Chance are extremely strong if your build can handle the increased resource costs. Splinter of Pain is one of the best survivability options if you're willing to sacrifice some Movement Speed. Splinter of the Black Soulstone can provide enormous damage during fast clears, although every additional stack makes each mistake more dangerous.For farming, we recommend Splinter of Lies and Splinter of Damnation. The first accelerates Gold, material, and Experience gains, while the second adds even more Experience after killing Elite groups. Splinter of Hellfire should always be evaluated against your specific build. For a setup that doesn't rely on normal Critical Strikes, it can be one of the strongest multipliers of the season. For a Critical Strike build, it's almost guaranteed to make your character weaker.

Which Three Soul Splinters Should You Use Together?

A general-purpose trio should be built around which drawbacks your build can safely ignore, not simply which effects show the biggest numbers. For a typical endgame build, we'd start with Splinter of Anguish + Splinter of Pain, then choose the third slot based on your goal: Black Soulstone for fast clearing, Sin for additional survivability, or Lies for farming.Don't force three offensive effects into the build at any cost. If Anguish leaves you without resources, Black Soulstone turns your character into a glass cannon, and Hellfire removes your Critical Strike Chance, the impressive tooltip numbers won't matter. In Season 15, the best Soul Splinter setup is the one where the drawbacks interfere with your particular build as little as possible.

Should You Upgrade Soul Splinters to Unique Immediately?

Yes, if you've already settled on your build. The drawbacks generally do not become less severe at higher rarity tiers, while the positive bonuses increase. This means there is little reason to keep using a Magic version for long. You're already taking almost the full downside while receiving a much smaller reward.We recommend keeping every duplicate of the type you need and gradually combining them through the Horadric Cube. If a Splinter doesn't suit your build at all, don't rush to invest resources into it just to reach maximum rarity. First, craft Unique versions of the two or three effects you'll actually use.

Don't Salvage Soul Splinters With Regular Gems

There is one more unpleasant quirk in the current version: the game categorizes Soul Splinters as gems. This means that when salvaging gems in bulk at the Jeweler, you can accidentally destroy the Soul Splinters you've been saving and turn them into ordinary Gem Fragments.There is no way to get them back afterward. If you're collecting duplicates for Amalgamation, we recommend moving your Soul Splinters into the Stash before salvaging unwanted regular gems. It's a small habit that can easily save you several hours of farming.
