The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has been one of the most popular games for modding for years, but PC players used to have all the fun. On PlayStation and Xbox, the most you could hope for were community improvements that CD PROJEKT RED itself decided to add through major updates. Remastered changes that completely: on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, you can now choose and install user-created mods yourself. To make this possible, the developers integrated mod.io and added a dedicated menu directly to the game. On consoles, this is the main way to work with mods: no folders, no manual file copying, and no attempts to move files into the game from a USB drive.Image unavailablePC players also get some changes, and arguably more interesting ones. The new system works there too, but the familiar Nexus Mods and Steam Workshop are not going anywhere. To keep all the modding options for The Witcher 3 from becoming confusing, we'll go through every available method below and explain why a PC mod does not automatically appear on PlayStation or Xbox.
Which Platforms Support Mods?
Official Cross-Platform Mod Support is confirmed for:
PC;
PlayStation 5;
Xbox Series X|S.
On all three platforms, the shared ecosystem works through mod.io. The service does not require an additional payment from The Witcher 3 players. However, cross-platform does not mean that absolutely any PC mod can now be sent to PS5 with a single click. Sony and Microsoft have their own requirements for user-created content, while CD PROJEKT RED also checks compatibility with the service's rules. So yes, the catalogs will overlap significantly, but they will not be identical.
Surprisingly enough, you need to link them. You do not have to create the mod.io account in advance through a browser: the developers allow registration the first time you open the new in-game Mods menu. Still, we recommend doing it beforehand. That way, after installing Remastered, you will not have to stop halfway through exploring all the new settings to remember a password, confirm your email, and figure out which CD PROJEKT RED account you used back when you were still young and beautiful.Image unavailable
How to Install Mods Through mod.io
After installing The Witcher 3 Remastered, launch the game and open the new Mods menu. The first time you enter it, sign in to mod.io or create a new account, then link it to your CD PROJEKT RED account. Cross-Platform Mod Support will not work without this connection. From there, everything is much simpler than old-school PC modding. Find the mod you want in the catalog, open its page, and install it. The game will download the available files through mod.io and add them to your list of installed mods. After installation, we recommend returning to the list and making sure the mod is actually enabled. For larger mods, read the author's description carefully as well: some require a new game, a specific expansion, or additional files.Just please do not install a hundred mods at once, even if ten years of waiting have left you desperate to turn White Orchard into a completely different location. Start with one or two, test your save, and only then expand the setup. If something breaks, it will be much easier to identify the culprit behind the celebration.
How to Install Mods on PS5
On PlayStation 5, everything goes through mod.io and the game's built-in menu. The process is:
Update The Witcher 3 to the Remastered version.
Launch the game and open the Mods menu.
Sign in to an existing mod.io account or create a new one.
Link it to your CD PROJEKT RED account.
Open the catalog and choose the mod you want.
Install it and make sure it is enabled in the mod list.
That's it. You do not need to copy archives to a USB drive, look for PlayStation system folders, or somehow transfer files from Nexus Mods. None of that will work. Console access to user-created mods goes through the official mod.io system.Image unavailableThe PS5 catalog will also be smaller than the PC catalog. If your favorite mod exists on Nexus Mods but does not appear in the Remastered menu, that does not necessarily mean something is broken. Most likely, the author has not released a compatible console version yet, or it has not passed the platform requirements.
How to Install Mods on Xbox Series X|S
On Xbox, the process is almost identical to PlayStation 5. Install Remastered, open the Mods menu, sign in to mod.io, and link the account to CD PROJEKT RED. After that, choose available mods directly from the in-game catalog. You do not need a separate mod manager, USB drive, or PC for the installation itself. The difference between Xbox and PlayStation may become apparent in the available catalog. CD PROJEKT RED explicitly warns that each platform has its own content selection criteria. As a result, a specific mod can theoretically appear on one console while remaining unavailable on the other. If the mod you want is missing, we recommend checking the author's page first. Sometimes the console version is still undergoing review, while in other cases the mod may be technically impossible to port without substantial reworking.
Why Don't All PC Mods Work on PS5 and Xbox?
This is one of the main limitations of the new system. PC gives mod authors much more freedom to alter files, use third-party tools, and run custom scripts. Consoles do not offer the same level of freedom.Image unavailableOne particularly important rule applies to script mods. If an author wants to release such a mod on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, it must be created using the official REDkit. For simpler changes, such as textures or resource bundles, REDkit is not always required. Even meeting the technical requirements does not guarantee anything automatically. The mod must also comply with the rules of the specific platform, CD PROJEKT RED's requirements, and mod.io's terms. So do not expect the entire decade-old Nexus Mods library to suddenly appear on consoles on release day. The catalog will expand gradually.
Can You Install Nexus Mods on PS5 and Xbox?
Nope. Nexus Mods remains a PC option. On consoles, user-created mods are accessed through mod.io. If an author wants to bring a project over from Nexus Mods, they need to prepare a compatible version separately and publish it in the new ecosystem.Image unavailableThat means old guide instructions such as "download the archive and unpack the modXXX folder into the Mods directory" apply to the PC version. You do not need to follow those steps on PS5 or Xbox.
How to Install Mods on PC Through mod.io
If you do not want to deal with manual installation, the new built-in option is the simplest. Launch Remastered, open the Mods menu, link mod.io to your CD PROJEKT RED account, and install the projects you want from there. The biggest advantage is not even cross-platform support, but the fact that you do not need to manage folders manually. We recommend starting with this method if you have never installed The Witcher 3 mods before, especially if you only want a few cosmetic changes or small interface improvements.
For more serious modding, PC still offers far more options.
How to Install Nexus Mods on PC
CD PROJEKT RED has separately confirmed that the launch of mod.io does not replace Nexus Mods. The old method is still supported on PC. Before downloading anything, carefully check the mod's last update date and compatibility notes. Remastered makes major changes to combat, the interface, skills, and several internal game systems, so an old mod made for version 4.04 should not automatically be assumed to work with the new client. We recommend looking for a clear note such as Remastered Compatible or confirmation from the author that the current version works after the update. Then follow the instructions on the mod's own page. This matters because there is no single universal installation method for every The Witcher 3 mod.Image unavailableThe simplest mods usually contain a folder named something like "modName," which goes into the "Mods" directory inside the game folder. More complex mods may also change files in "bin," add their own DLC, menus, or scripts. If the author requires additional steps, follow those exact instructions. We do not recommend blindly dumping the contents of every archive into the game folder.
Do You Need a Mod Manager on PC?
For two small mods, not necessarily. For twenty, yes, very much so. A manager makes it easier to enable, disable, and remove files, and more importantly, it helps you understand what is actually sitting in the game directory. That is much more convenient than staring at a dozen folders called things like "modSomethingFinalNEW2" three months later and trying to remember what can safely be deleted. However, before moving to Remastered, we do not recommend automatically carrying over your old setup together with every manager, limit patch, and script utility. First, wait for confirmation that the latest versions are compatible specifically with Remastered.Nexus Mods is also preparing to distinguish between compatible and outdated projects, since a major update will almost inevitably break at least some older script-based mods.
How to Install Mods Through Steam Workshop
If you own the game on Steam, you can continue using Steam Workshop. CD PROJEKT RED has officially confirmed that support for it remains alongside Nexus Mods.Open The Witcher 3 Workshop page, choose the mod you want, and subscribe to it. Steam will download the associated files automatically. The same rule applies here as with Nexus Mods: check whether the project has been updated for Remastered. The fact that an old mod still exists in the Workshop does not guarantee that it will launch correctly after a major update.Image unavailableIf the game starts crashing after installation, disable the most recently added mod first instead of reinstalling all of The Witcher 3.
Which Is Better on PC: mod.io, Nexus Mods, or Steam Workshop?
If you want the simplest option, choose mod.io. Everything is built into the game, so you do not have to find directories manually or keep track of where an archive is being extracted.Steam Workshop is also convenient for one-click installation, but it is only available to owners of the Steam version and depends on which projects authors choose to publish there.Nexus Mods remains the most flexible option for serious PC modding. It has historically hosted an enormous The Witcher 3 library, including projects that will never reach consoles. We would not pick one platform "forever." Use mod.io for a few new cross-platform mods. If you need a specific project from Nexus, install it from there. Just remember to read the compatibility notes and requirements.
Do You Need to Install REDkit?
No, not if you only want to play. The Witcher 3 REDkit is primarily intended for mod creators. It provides access to tools similar to those CD PROJEKT RED used to build the game itself, allowing users to create quests, characters, items, animations, and even entirely new areas.Image unavailableRegular players do not need any of that. You can download mods through mod.io, Nexus Mods, or Steam Workshop without installing the editor. REDkit becomes important if you want to create your own content. It is also mandatory for script-based console mods.
Can You Create Mods Directly on PS5 or Xbox?
No. Consoles let you use approved mods, but not develop them. Creation happens on PC using REDkit or other supported tools. The author then uploads the project to The Witcher 3 section on mod.io and goes through the required approval process for the target platforms. In other words, the built-in PS5 and Xbox menu is a catalog and installer, not an editor.
Will Old Mods Work in Remastered?
This is an area where you should be especially careful. The fact that a mod exists for the post-Next-Gen version does not guarantee that it will work in Remastered. This is especially true for mods that change scripts, the interface, combat, or progression, since those are exactly the areas that have been significantly reworked in the new version. If you want to continue an old modded playthrough, do not update the entire setup blindly. Check the page of every important mod and make sure the author has confirmed compatibility.Nexus Mods has separately warned ahead of release that a major update will likely break a significant portion of older projects. For your first Remastered launch, we therefore recommend disabling your old setup entirely, starting the clean game, and reintroducing mods gradually.Be especially careful with old progression mods. Remastered completely reworks the skill tree, so any mod that altered the old abilities sits directly in the danger zone. We covered the changes to the system itself in our guide to the best skills and new progression in The Witcher 3 Remastered.
Can You Use Multiple Mods at the Same Time?
Yes, but compatibility depends on the individual projects. Two mods that change completely different things are less likely to interfere with each other. If both rewrite the same scripts, interface elements, or items, conflicts become much more likely.Image unavailableOn PC, complex setups have traditionally relied on additional tools for script handling and load order management. After Remastered launches, make sure those tools have also been updated for the new version. On consoles, it is better to move gradually: install a few mods, launch the game, check your save, and only then add more. A hundred mods at once sounds fun right up until Geralt starts flying over Velen without a head or pants and you have absolutely no idea which of the ninety-eight archives caused it.
How to Remove or Disable a Mod
If a mod was installed through the built-in mod.io system, open the Mods menu and disable or remove it there. In Steam Workshop, simply unsubscribe from the corresponding project and Steam will remove the associated files. With Nexus Mods, the process depends on how you installed the mod. If you used a manager, remove it through the manager. If you installed it manually, follow the author's instructions and delete exactly the files you added. We do not recommend simply opening the "Mods" folder and deleting everything in sight. Some larger projects place data in several directories, so this kind of "treatment" can leave half the mod behind in the game.
What to Do If the Game Won't Launch After Installing a Mod
First, think about what you changed most recently. If you installed a new mod five minutes ago and The Witcher 3 now refuses to launch, it makes more sense to disable that mod first than to blame your NVIDIA driver and reinstall Windows.Image unavailableDisable the most recently added mods and try launching the game without them. If everything works, check the author's page. You may need an updated version, an additional file, or another dependency mod. If you are using a large PC setup, the cause may be a conflict between several scripts.
Can You Use Cosmetic Mods Instead of Transmog?
Yes, but in Remastered you often do not need to. The game now includes built-in transmog, allowing you to keep the stats of one armor piece or weapon while using the appearance of another item. So for something simple like "I want to wear Geralt's old jacket without losing armor," you no longer necessarily need a separate mod.We explained how to unlock the new system through Yoana and Hattori in our guide to transmog and changing the appearance of armor and weapons.Mods are still useful for completely new models, hairstyles, textures, and other options that do not exist in the base game at all. But check Remastered's built-in features first. CD PROJEKT RED may already have solved the problem you wanted to fix.
Do Mods Disable Achievements and Trophies?
In the official Cross-Platform Mod Support FAQ, CD PROJEKT RED has not established a general rule stating that every installed mod automatically disables achievements or trophies.Because of that, we would not promise the opposite for every platform and every type of mod either. If you are playing specifically for a Platinum trophy or a rare achievement, it is safer to keep a separate clean save until the system has been fully tested in the release version. This is especially important for mods that directly make combat easier, change quests, or interfere with progression.
Which Mods Should You Install First?
We do not recommend starting Remastered with a massive mod collection. The new version already makes substantial changes to graphics, controls, combat, progression, and the interface. Play for at least a few hours without major overhauls first and see which old problems are actually still there. After that, start adding smaller cosmetic or quality-of-life mods. If everything works, move on to new quests, balance changes, and larger REDkit projects. That way, you will at least understand where Remastered ends and the community's work begins. And if something breaks, you will not have to troubleshoot the new game and twenty altered systems at the same time.
