With the launch of Season 15, Diablo 4 introduced the Rebirth system. If you have been dragging the same Barbarian around for several years, have grown attached to their appearance, and do not want to create yet another nearly identical hero from scratch, you no longer have to. An old character from the Eternal Realm can now be moved into the Seasonal Realm so you can continue playing them there.
Do not think of Rebirth as a full progression transfer. Your hero will not burst into the new season at maximum level with a finished build and an inventory packed with Mythic items. After the process, they start at Level 1, just like a completely new Seasonal character. What mainly carries over is the character's identity: class, name, appearance, state, some cosmetic preferences, and accumulated playtime. In this detailed guide, we'll explain how to prepare for Rebirth, what you absolutely need to move into the Stash, and which data remains after entering Season 15.
What Is Rebirth in Diablo 4?
Rebirth converts an Eternal character into a Seasonal character. It converts the existing character rather than creating a copy. After you confirm the process, that same hero leaves the Eternal Realm, appears in the current Seasonal Realm, and starts progression again from Level 1. That means the old max-level version of the character will not remain behind. If you want to keep a separate hero in the Eternal Realm while starting the season with the same class, it is easier to create a new character manually.Image unavailableRebirth does not provide a practical leveling advantage either. A newly created Seasonal character and a Reborn character both start at Level 1. The system is primarily intended for players who are attached to a particular character and want to continue that hero's story from season to season instead of creating a dozen nearly identical copies.
What to Do Before Rebirth
This is where you should avoid rushing straight to the confirmation button. Before Rebirth, the character must be completely free of equipped gear and items in their personal inventory. We recommend logging into the Eternal Realm with that hero first and calmly checking every slot. Remove weapons, armor, jewelry, and all other equipped items, then move everything from your bags that you want to keep into the Eternal Stash.Items placed in the Eternal Stash will not disappear. Your Reborn character simply will not be able to use them in the Seasonal Realm. They remain in the Eternal Realm, where eligible characters can still access them. If anything is left on the character, Diablo 4 will warn you before Rebirth. The game will let you either remove the items or destroy them. You cannot complete Rebirth at all while the character still has equipped items or anything left in their personal inventory.
How to Rebirth a Character and Move Them Into Season 15
Once everything is prepared, return to the Character Select screen and choose the hero from the Eternal Realm that you want to move into the season. The Rebirth option will be available in the menu. Before confirming, check two things again: the character's class and their state. Rebirth does not let you turn a Barbarian into a Paladin or convert a Normal character into Hardcore at the same time. Those properties remain exactly as they were before the process.Image unavailableNext, start Rebirth and read the warning about any remaining items. If the character has no gear equipped and the personal inventory is empty, confirm the transition. The character will move into the Seasonal Realm and appear there at Level 1. From that point, you can begin the season exactly as you would with a newly created hero.
What Carries Over After Rebirth?
Rebirth mainly preserves information tied to the character themselves rather than their power.The following remain after the transition:
character class;
name;
appearance;
Normal or Hardcore state;
total playtime on that character.
The last point is especially nice for players who genuinely stick with one hero for years. The playtime counter does not reset after every Rebirth, so the character gradually builds their own history across multiple seasons. You cannot change class. If your Eternal character was a Barbarian, they remain a Barbarian in Season 15. The same applies to state: a Hardcore character remains Hardcore after Rebirth.
Which Cosmetic Items Carry Over?
Blizzard also allows you to preserve your selected character appearance. If you save it as an Ensemble, the cosmetic preferences currently in use can carry over after Rebirth.These include:
transmogs;
pigments;
mounts;
mount accessories;
pets;
portal cosmetics;
headstones.
Before Rebirth, we recommend opening the Wardrobe and saving your current look as a separate Ensemble. That way, you not only keep the character themselves but also begin the season looking almost the same, as far as the system allows. Naturally, this applies only to cosmetic appearance. A Unique helmet equipped on the character does not magically become a Seasonal item just because you are using its transmog.
What Does Not Carry Over After Rebirth?
Now for the important part. Rebirth does not let you bypass the seasonal reset. After the transition, you lose the character's current level and start again at Level 1. Your finished build, progression, and equipment do not travel into the season with you.Image unavailableThe following do not transfer:
character level;
finished build;
equipment;
items from the character's personal inventory;
items you moved into the Eternal Stash beforehand — they remain safe, but stay in the Eternal Realm.
So the process is extremely simple: put everything valuable into the Eternal Stash, use Rebirth to move the character themselves into the season, and rebuild their power from scratch.
Does Paragon Progress Carry Over?
No. Rebirth does not transfer a character's completed progression. The hero returns to Level 1 and progresses through the current season again. That is exactly why we do not recommend using Rebirth in the hope of getting a head start. An old character is no stronger here than a newly created one. You are preserving their name, class, appearance, and history, not transferring accumulated power.Account-wide systems continue to work according to their own seasonal rules and are not a Rebirth bonus. For example, starting in Season 15, War Plan progression is shared between eligible characters on the same account depending on Realm, state, and character type. Rebirth itself does not grant any additional points.
What Happens to a Hardcore Character?
If you Rebirth a Hardcore character, they remain Hardcore. You cannot switch to Normal during the process.And this is where we recommend thinking twice before confirming. Rebirth moves the existing hero, so you cannot use it as a convenient way to remove Hardcore status.If you want to play Season 15 without the risk of losing the character after one bad encounter, create a separate Normal hero.
Can You Change Class During Rebirth?
No. Class is part of the character data that Rebirth deliberately preserves. That means you cannot turn a Necromancer into a Paladin during the process. If you want to try another class in the new season, create a new character or choose a different Eternal hero of the class you want to Rebirth.The same logic applies to Rebirth as a whole: the system is specifically designed to continue the story of one particular character. Completely changing their identity while moving them into a season would defeat the point.
Can You Rebirth the Same Character Every Season?
That is exactly what the system was created for. Blizzard specifically preserves the character's total playtime across Rebirths, so you can carry the same favorite hero through future seasons again and again.When a season ends, that character returns to the Eternal Realm as usual. Once the next season begins and the hero again meets the requirements for Rebirth, you can use them for another Seasonal start. Instead of building an army of "Barbarian1," "Barbarian2," and "Barbarian_Season15," you can keep using the same character with the same appearance, name, and accumulated playtime.
Rebirth or New Character — Which Should You Choose?
There is practically no difference in leveling speed: in both cases, the season begins at Level 1. So the choice should not be based on efficiency, but on who you want to play. We recommend Rebirth if you like your existing character, want to preserve their name and appearance, continue tracking total playtime, and plan to use the same class again.Creating a new hero is easier if you want a different class, state, or completely different appearance. You also will not need to unload the old character first and move their items into the Eternal Stash. Most importantly, do not treat Rebirth as a loophole for transferring wealth out of the Eternal Realm. It is a convenient way to move the hero themselves into the season, not the results of their previous life. Leave the gear at home, reset to Level 1, and go back to killing demons from the beginning.
