Transfiguration is one of the riskiest Horadric Cube features in Season 15 of Diablo 4. It can add an extremely powerful damage multiplier or another bonus effect to an item, but it can also replace a useful affix and permanently prevent any further modifications. This means you should never Transfigure an unfinished item. In this guide, we'll explain how the system works, which Tuning Prisms to use, and why you should always have a replacement item ready before the final Transfiguration.

What Does Transfiguration Do?

Transfiguration allows the Horadric Cube to apply an additional modification to an item that is already close to finished. The possible results include extremely powerful affixes, such as separate multipliers to Physical, Fire, Shadow, and other types of damage. Bonuses like these can provide a significant boost to an endgame build.However, Transfiguration can also produce negative results. It may replace or remove a stat you need and add an affix that is completely useless for your build. For example, a build that specifically cannot afford to have additional Maximum Life may accidentally receive exactly that bonus. Because of this, you should only Transfigure an item if you already have at least a decent replacement ready.

Why Transfiguration Should Be the Final Step

After Transfiguration, an item can receive the Unmodifiable tag.Once this happens, you can no longer:
  • Enchant it;
  • Temper it;
  • Masterwork it;
  • add Sockets;
  • change its other properties.
In practice, the item should already be completely finished before you reach this stage. Before using Transfiguration, make sure you have imprinted the correct Aspect, completed all necessary Tempering, added every Socket you need, and finished Masterworking. Forgetting even a single step can ruin an otherwise excellent item because there may be no way to go back and fix it afterward.

How the Entropic Tuning Prism Works

The Entropic Tuning Prism makes Transfiguration more predictable. It removes the riskiest possible outcomes, but it also prevents some of the most powerful positive results from appearing. This makes it the safer option if you do not want to gamble an almost-finished item for the strongest possible upgrade.The Entropic Tuning Prism is most useful when you're already happy with the item and simply want an additional improvement without exposing it to the most extreme Transfiguration outcomes. Keep in mind that using this Prism guarantees that the item becomes Unmodifiable afterward.

How to Add a Second Aspect to an Amulet

Amulets have a special Transfiguration option. The Kullean Tuning Prism allows the item to remain Modifiable after Transfiguration while adding a second Legendary Aspect.This lets an Amulet use its main Aspect alongside another useful bonus Aspect that would normally have to occupy a different equipment slot.This is especially valuable because Amulets increase the effectiveness of certain Aspect powers. A well-chosen second Aspect can therefore provide a significant boost to a build. For example, one of the builds shown in the source uses this method to add an Aspect that allows the character to maintain Berserking continuously.

How to Prepare an Item for Transfiguration

First, finish working on the item's regular affixes through the Horadric Cube and the Occultist. Then imprint the Legendary Aspect you need and complete Tempering. After that, add all required Sockets. Finish Masterworking and make sure the item is already ready to use as the final version for your build without any further changes.Only then should you move on to Transfiguration. If you get a bad result, you may no longer have the option to simply return to the Cube and continue normal crafting. This is why the source strongly recommends preparing a replacement copy of the item before taking the risk.

When Is Transfiguration Worth the Risk?

Transfiguration is primarily intended for endgame gear after you have exhausted most conventional upgrade options. If an item still has poor base affixes, bad Tempering, or the wrong Aspect, there is no reason to use this system yet.It is much more efficient to first create a genuinely strong base item and only then attempt to turn it into something close to perfect.
