In Season 15 of Diablo 4, the Horadric Cube lets you create items based on classic Runewords from Diablo 2. One of the strongest options is Enigma: it turns Evade into the Sorcerer's Teleport, increases Skill Ranks, Movement Speed, and Maximum Life, while also reducing incoming damage. You do not necessarily have to wait for every required Rune to drop, either. The Horadric Cube can upgrade Runes, convert accumulated resources into specific Runes, and help turn lower-tier drops into the ones you actually need. In this guide, we'll explain where to farm Runes, how Rune upgrades work, and which Runewords are particularly useful.
Runes can drop from various open-world activities, including Helltides and Tree of Whispers objectives. However, one of the most effective sources is the Prime Evils. As you progress through the Torment difficulties, their encounters become increasingly rewarding and can provide large numbers of Runes alongside Mythic Uniques, Sigils, and gear with Greater Affixes.You do not need to farm a specific boss for every individual Rune. One of the sources we checked repeatedly farmed Baal and gradually obtained most of the required set from him. Baal is particularly convenient because the route through the Worldstone Keep is relatively short. Once you memorize the layout, you can finish a run quickly and immediately start another.Image unavailable
How to Craft Enigma
To craft Enigma, you need a Common white Chest Armor and three Runes:
Jah
Ith
Ber
After transmutation, the Chest Armor becomes Enigma. Its defining effect replaces the standard Evade with a Teleport similar to the Sorcerer's ability.Image unavailableEnigma also provides additional Ranks to all Skills, increased Movement Speed, Damage Reduction, and Maximum Life. This combination of mobility and universally useful stats makes it one of the most interesting Runewords of the season.
How to Craft Stealth
Stealth is considerably cheaper than Enigma and works well during earlier stages of progression.To craft it, you need a Common white Chest Armor and the following Runes:
Tal
Eth
Image unavailableIn the current version, Stealth no longer has the Teleport effect. However, the item still provides several useful stats at once, including Attack Speed, Movement Speed, Damage Reduction, Maximum Life, Resource Generation, and Impairment Reduction. Its low cost makes it a good Runeword for a character that does not yet have the resources required for Enigma.
What Other Runewords Are Worth Crafting?
The best choice depends on your class and build. For characters that can use a Shield, Spirit is particularly interesting, as it provides additional Ranks to all Skills, Attack Speed, Maximum Life, and Maximum Resource.Barbarians using Shout-focused builds may benefit from Call to Arms, which significantly increases the Ranks of Shout Skills and provides additional bonuses while a Shout is active.For Druids, Rain is another interesting option. This Runeword increases Ranks to Nature Magic Skills and can trigger Tornado and Cyclone Armor effects.
For most builds, however, Enigma remains one of the most universal options. Turning Evade into Teleport is useful almost regardless of which class you play.
How to Craft a Missing Rune
If a particular Rune refuses to drop, open the Rune crafting section of the Horadric Cube. Some specific Runes can be crafted directly from other Runes instead.For example, the targeted recipe for Jah requires 1 Cem Rune, 5 Rare Runes, and 5 Legendary Ritual Runes. Similar recipes exist for several other high-value Runes, so if random drops are not cooperating, check the corresponding recipe directly in the Horadric Cube.Rare and Legendary Runes can be farmed efficiently in the Undercity. The Greater Tribute of Harmony is particularly useful because it increases the amount and quality of Rune rewards. Lower-tier Tributes are also worth keeping, since supported Tribute types can be upgraded through Amalgamation in the Horadric Cube. If you are short on basic Tributes, random Magic Tributes can also be crafted at the Occultist using Sigil Powder. Sigil Powder can be obtained by salvaging Infernal Hordes Compasses, Nightmare Dungeon Sigils, and other Dungeon Keys.
How to Upgrade Runes with the Horadric Cube
Season 15 also includes hidden Horadric Cube recipes that recreate part of the classic Rune upgrade system from Diablo 2. Lower Runes can be combined into the next Rune in the chain. For example, three Tal Runes become one Ral Rune.Image unavailableAt the upper end of the low-Rune chain, gems are also required. The progression works as follows:
3 Tir → Eth;
3 Eth → Ith;
3 Ith → Tal;
3 Tal → Ral;
3 Ral → Ort;
3 Ort → Thul;
3 Thul + Chipped Topaz → Amn;
3 Amn + Chipped Amethyst → Sol.
There is an important gap after Sol: there is no Horadric Cube recipe that upgrades Sol into Mal. The high-Rune ladder begins separately with Mal:
2 Mal + Flawless Amethyst → Ist;
2 Ist + Flawless Ruby → Vex;
2 Vex + Flawless Emerald → Ohm;
2 Ohm + Flawless Diamond → Lo;
2 Lo + Grand Topaz → Ber;
2 Ber + Grand Sapphire → Jah.
This allows you to gradually turn accumulated lower Runes from each ladder into the ones required for expensive Runewords. In particular, the final two recipes provide a direct route from Lo to Ber and then from Ber to Jah, making them especially important when working toward Enigma.
What to Do with Unwanted Runes
Do not immediately throw away lower-value Runes. In addition to the fixed upgrade recipes above, the Horadric Cube has an Amalgamation system for converting accumulated Runes. For example, five Magic Runes can be turned into a random Rare Rune, while five Rare Runes can produce a random Legendary Rune.The exact result is random, but this provides a useful way to recycle large collections of Runes that your build does not need.The resulting Rare and Legendary Runes can then be used in targeted Rune crafting recipes. Because of this, it is generally worth collecting almost every Rune while actively farming. Even a Rune that is completely useless to your current character can eventually become part of the materials needed to craft Jah, Ber, or another Rune required for your Runeword.
