Specializations in Dune: Awakening are not available immediately. First, you need to reach Rank 5 with House Atreides or House Harkonnen and complete the corresponding faction questline across Hagga Basin and the capital hubs. This unlocks Landsraad Missions, which provide progression for five Specialization tracks: Combat, Sabotage, Exploration, Crafting, and Gathering. Each track provides permanent bonuses, but investing in all of them at once is inefficient. Some traits noticeably speed up progression almost immediately, while others only become useful closer to the endgame, and several upgrades can safely be skipped altogether. In this guide, we'll explain which Specializations to prioritize, where to stop during the early game, and which traits are actually worth spending Spice Melange on.Leave Sabotage for later, or level it gradually between Combat investments. It is also better to avoid investing heavily in Gathering until your main combat and production Specializations are already well developed.
How to Unlock Specializations
The Specialization system becomes available after reaching Rank 5 with House Atreides or House Harkonnen. To get there, you'll need to complete a series of faction missions spread across Hagga Basin and the capital hubs.Once the system is unlocked, you'll gain access to Landsraad Missions. These provide progression for five separate Specialization tracks. At the time the source footage was recorded, you could earn progress from up to 35 of these missions per week, with five bonus rewards available per day. Because of this weekly limit, it is important to decide in advance where you want to invest your points. A suboptimal choice will not ruin your character, but it can significantly delay access to the strongest bonuses.Which Specializations Are Available in Dune: Awakening
There are five Specialization tracks:- Crafting
- Gathering
- Exploration
- Combat
- Sabotage
How to Level Crafting
For solo play and early progression in general, Crafting is one of the most useful Specializations. It is worth leveling before the others because its early traits directly improve your equipment and base progression.Prioritize additional Augmentation slots for ranged and melee weapons. If you know you are not going to use one of these weapon categories, you can skip the corresponding trait and save some Spice Melange. For your main weapon type, however, the extra slot is extremely useful. You should also pick up Repair Master. This trait reduces the maximum durability lost when repairing equipment, so the large red damaged portion of an item's durability bar builds up more slowly.Consumable Batch Crafting is another useful trait. It is particularly effective if you regularly produce ammunition, consumables, Healkits, and large quantities of supplies for your base.It is also worth investing in Superior Spice Yield and bonuses to production in Chemical Refineries. The closer you get to the endgame, the more Spice you will need, so improving your refining efficiency early pays off later. When to Stop Leveling Crafting
For a new character, Level 31 is a good temporary stopping point. By then, you will have unlocked a second Augmentation slot for both melee and ranged weapons, providing a major boost to equipment flexibility. After that, you can switch to other Specializations. Later, return to Crafting and raise it to around Level 42 to unlock a second Augmentation slot for armor. In the long run, it is worth maxing out the track because the higher levels provide additional bonuses to durability, refining, and your chances of obtaining useful Schematics. However, there is no need to max Crafting before developing your other Specializations.Which Crafting Traits Should You Take First
If your Spice Melange is limited, prioritize upgrades that directly affect your equipment and production. Additional Augmentation slots are more valuable than most secondary bonuses. Repair Master also pays off quickly, especially if you fight frequently and need to repair your gear often.Augment Fabrication Mastery becomes more appealing if you craft a lot of gear during the low and mid tiers. If you plan to rush through the early game and only start seriously crafting equipment later, you can postpone this trait. How to Level Gathering
Gathering provides bonuses to resource extraction, weight-related mechanics, and other utility systems, but its early-game value is noticeably lower than that of the other tracks. It is still worth investing in roughly the first ten levels. They are relatively cheap and provide useful resource bonuses, so a small investment pays for itself quickly. After that, the returns become less significant. Additional resource yield is useful, but investing heavily here means delaying Crafting, Combat, or Exploration, whose bonuses have a much larger impact on your overall progression. If your character is primarily focused on resource gathering, you can invest more heavily in this track. For combat-focused or general-purpose builds, however, it is better to stop after the early levels and return to Gathering much later. Is It Worth Investing in Weight Reduction
Gathering includes bonuses that reduce the burden of carrying bodies when using Deathstills and other related systems. These can be useful if you frequently harvest water and resources this way, but they are not as universally valuable as increased vehicle speed, additional Augmentation slots, or combat bonuses.Because of this, they are only worth taking if your playstyle actually revolves around these mechanics. For most players, they are a low priority early on.How to Level Exploration
Exploration is one of the most universally useful Specializations. It increases inventory capacity, improves vehicle efficiency, reduces the drawbacks of long-distance travel, and provides additional bonuses for extended expeditions. This track is particularly useful in the Deep Desert. The more inventory space you have and the longer your vehicles can operate efficiently, the less often you need to return to base after clearing Testing Stations, crashed ships, and other points of interest. How Far Should You Level Exploration
Level 20 is an excellent early target. This is where you unlock Vehicle Speed Bonus, which increases maximum vehicle speed by around 15%. The difference is immediately noticeable, especially when using a Scout Ornithopter. It is also useful for cargo and combat vehicles, and in PvP it helps both when chasing another player and when trying to escape. After Level 20, you can temporarily leave the track alone. Crafting and Combat generally provide more value during the early game, so there is little reason to invest deeply in Exploration right away.Which Exploration Traits Are Worth Taking Later
Higher levels unlock useful bonuses to loot obtained from containers and hidden caches. Hidden Caches at around Level 40 is particularly valuable because it can increase the amount of resources found in loot containers. This makes it a strong endgame farming option if you regularly visit Testing Stations, crashed ships, and other locations filled with valuable containers.Vehicle sandstorm damage reduction, Vehicle Recovery Cost Reduction, fuel efficiency, and some climbing-related bonuses can safely be skipped if you are short on Spice Melange. Fuel is relatively easy to obtain in the endgame, and recovering a vehicle is usually not expensive enough to justify prioritizing these traits. How to Level Combat
After your early investment in Crafting and reaching Level 20 in Exploration, you should start focusing primarily on Combat. This track increases damage, Damage Mitigation, maximum health, stamina, and grants additional skill points. This makes it particularly important for endgame content. If you plan to regularly clear Testing Stations, complete Landsraad Missions, tackle difficult PvE activities, or participate in PvP, Combat will eventually become one of your most important Specializations. Why Combat Is More Important Than Sabotage
Combat improves both your damage and survivability at the same time. Damage Mitigation provides a universal defensive benefit for most builds. Sabotage mainly improves narrower mechanics, including stagger, damage against staggered enemies, and certain headshot-focused builds. This makes Combat useful for almost any character, while the effectiveness of Sabotage depends heavily on your weapon choice and playstyle. How Much Should You Invest in Combat
Once you have reached Level 31 in Crafting and Level 20 in Exploration, you can safely direct most of your new points into Combat. The track becomes especially valuable at higher levels because reaching Level 100 grants a significant number of additional skill points along with major bonuses to health, stamina, damage, and Damage Mitigation. How to Level Sabotage
Sabotage is best treated as a secondary Specialization that complements Combat rather than a standalone primary path. It offers bonuses to stagger damage, headshots, and certain control mechanics. This makes it a good fit for builds using heavy melee attacks, shotguns, and weapons that rely heavily on staggering enemies. If you mainly use a sniper rifle or weapons that barely interact with stagger mechanics, a large portion of the track will be much less useful.Which Sabotage Traits Are Worth Taking
One of the most interesting traits unlocks at around Level 40: What's Theirs is Mine. It causes enemy corpses to provide additional loot, including rare higher-tier components. This is especially useful when repeatedly clearing Testing Stations and other locations packed with powerful enemies.Landsraad Contributor is also useful. Even a few extra percentage points of contribution add up over time and help you progress through the relevant Landsraad activities faster. If your build focuses on headshots, Head Hunter is worth taking. If headshots are not an important part of your playstyle, there is little reason to spend Spice Melange on it.Which Sabotage Traits Can You Skip
You do not need to spend points on increased scanning range, slower enemy recognition, reduced Landsraad bribe costs, and other narrow utility bonuses right away. Increased explosive barrel damage is also questionable. At high levels, environmental explosions deal too little damage to justify a significant investment. It is better to save your Spice Melange for stronger effects or spend it on Combat, where almost every level provides a more universal benefit. How to Split Points Between Combat and Sabotage
After getting the essential early levels in Crafting and Exploration, direct most of your resources into Combat. For every large batch of points invested in Combat, you can put roughly a quarter to a third of that amount into Sabotage. This allows you to gradually pick up useful bonuses from the secondary track without slowing down your main combat progression too much.If your build barely uses stagger or headshots, you can postpone Sabotage entirely until Combat reaches around Level 70.Which Specializations Should New Players Level First
For a new character, the easiest approach is to progress in stages. Start with Crafting and raise it to around Level 31 to unlock the key Augmentation slots and early production bonuses. Then raise Exploration to Level 20 for the Vehicle Speed Bonus. At the same time, you can take the first few levels of Gathering because they are inexpensive and provide useful improvements to resource collection. After that, shift your main focus to Combat. This track has the biggest impact on difficult PvE content and preparing for the endgame.
Optimal Specialization Leveling Order
If you want a simple progression route without wasting Spice Melange, first raise Crafting to Level 31. Then take Exploration to Level 20 and invest in roughly the first 10 levels of Gathering. After that, start developing Combat aggressively. You can gradually level Sabotage alongside it, especially if you use shotguns, heavy attacks, or a headshot-focused build.Later, return to Crafting and raise it to at least Level 42 for the second armor Augmentation slot. From there, choose your direction based on the content you play: fully develop Combat, invest more deeply in Exploration for Deep Desert farming, or pick up specialized Sabotage traits.Which Traits Should You Avoid Buying Early
The biggest mistake is unlocking every available bonus simply because it appears along your progression path. You will need a huge amount of Spice Melange, so secondary upgrades are better left for later. In Exploration, do not rush to take fuel efficiency, Vehicle Recovery Cost Reduction, sandstorm damage reduction, and some of the climbing-related bonuses. In Sabotage, you can postpone scanning-related traits, enemy recognition bonuses, Greasing Palms, and increased explosive barrel damage. There is also no need to invest deeply in narrow Gathering bonuses unless resource collection is one of your character's primary roles.Focus on Augmentation slots, repairs, vehicle speed, combat stats, health, stamina, and useful loot bonuses. These provide the most noticeable benefits throughout the game. What to Level for the Endgame
Once your core Specializations are developed, your priorities gradually shift toward Combat and fully leveling Crafting.Combat is essential for difficult Testing Stations, repeatable missions, and PvP because it directly increases both damage and survivability. Crafting lets you get more out of top-tier equipment, Augmentations, and production. After that, you can invest further in Exploration for more inventory space, better loot, and more convenient long-distance expeditions. Sabotage complements certain combat builds well, while Gathering is worth maxing once the other key tracks are complete or if resource collection is your character's main role. This progression order lets you unlock the strongest bonuses faster without wasting rare Spice Melange on effects that have very little impact during your first few dozen hours.Sign in to leave a comment or rate this post.
