This guide explains every major ending in the game, including what happens to Villedor, how Lawan and Hakon can survive, which group takes power, and whether there is any way to save Mia.Dying Light 2 Stay Human gives Aiden plenty of choices, but only a handful have a lasting effect on the finale. Decisions involving Hakon, Frank, the VNC Tower, Colonel Williams, and X13 shape the final sequence far more than most dialogue options or faction assignments made earlier in the campaign. Below, we break down the routes that matter and explain what each one changes.
How to Save Villedor Without Losing Lawan or Hakon
The closest thing Dying Light 2 has to a happy ending requires Hakon to reach the final mission alive. His survival creates a way out of the apparent choice between saving Villedor and saving Lawan. Aiden can focus on Mia while Hakon handles Lawan, allowing the missile strike to be stopped without sacrificing her.
Hakon
Hakon's fate is decided long before X13. Keep him alive whenever the story gives Aiden the chance:
When Hakon is hit by an arrow near the end of Revolution or Into the Dark, stay and help him instead of walking away. Doing so opens the side quest Sniper's Alley.
Finish Sniper's Alley. Much later, Aiden can meet Hakon again in Nightrunners, No Mercy, or Deals with the Devil. De-escalate the confrontation after the fights, then stop Lawan when she tries to kill him.

Frank's branch leads to Nightrunners, the Peacekeeper branch can lead to No Mercy, and Juan's branch can lead to Deals with the Devil. The quest name changes, but the requirement does not. Hakon needs to walk away from the church alive.
Colonel Williams
Chris Williams, usually called the Butcher, is tied to the Black Monday disaster and spends most of the story as one of Jack Matt's main enemies. The confrontation near the end of the campaign gives Aiden a clearer picture of what happened and forces him to decide whose version of events he trusts. The relevant choice appears in Now or Never. Aiden can cooperate with Williams or open the way for Jack Matt and the Peacekeepers.Colonel Williams, the ButcherColonel Williams, the ButcherWorking with Williams sends Aiden toward X13 without draining the submerged part of the city. Helping Jack Matt produces a different sequence in which the bulkheads are lowered and the Sunken City becomes accessible. This branch affects the route, several encounters, and the state of that district. It does not decide whether the missiles destroy Villedor. That decision comes later.
The Final Choice in X13
Once Waltz is defeated, the story reaches its decisive moment. The missiles are about to launch, Lawan has explosives ready, and Mia is barely hanging on. Aiden cannot personally deal with both problems at once.
[Let Lawan detonate the bombs] Aiden leaves Lawan behind and returns to Mia. The explosives stop the launch, so Villedor avoids the strike. Hakon changes the outcome if he survived the earlier quests: he reaches Lawan and gets her out before the facility is destroyed. Without Hakon, Lawan dies in the explosion.
[Save Lawan] Aiden abandons the demolition plan and goes after her. Lawan survives, but the missiles reach Villedor and cause massive destruction. A surviving Hakon can assist with Mia and may later leave the city with Aiden. If Hakon is already dead, Aiden eventually departs on his own.
For a finale where both the city and Lawan survive, keep Hakon alive and choose the option that leaves Lawan to finish the demolition. The wording makes the choice sound fatal for her, but Hakon provides the rescue that Aiden cannot. There is one more condition if you want Lawan to travel with Aiden afterward. Frank needs control of the VNC Tower in Broadcast, he must survive the attack in The Breakthrough, Hakon must still be alive, and the missiles must be destroyed.
Who Rules Villedor After the Ending
Saving the city is only part of the finale. If Villedor is still standing, the epilogue also reflects the political route Aiden followed. Early facility assignments are often mistaken for the deciding factor, but giving water towers and electrical stations to a faction mainly unlocks gameplay rewards. The VNC Tower decision in Broadcast is far more important to the story branch. The three main routes work as follows:
Hand the VNC Tower transmitter to Frank. This continues the Survivor and Nightrunner storyline. If Frank is later kept alive and the missiles are stopped, the epilogue shows the Nightrunners taking a leading role in Villedor.
Refuse Juan's offer in Welcome on Board, then place the transmitter under Jack Matt's control in Broadcast. Continuing down that branch leads toward the Peacekeeper version of the epilogue if Villedor survives.
Accept Juan's proposal in Welcome on Board and follow through with his transmitter plan in Broadcast. Staying on his branch through the late-game missions can produce the Juan and Renegade version of the ending.
This means there is no need to hand every facility on the map to one side just to secure a particular story ending. Facility control and story allegiance overlap in places, but they are not the same system. For the late-game route, pay particular attention to the VNC Tower.Juan provides the third major route. It begins when Aiden accepts his proposal aboard the PK ship. Later, during Broadcast, the transmitter must be used according to Juan's plan. From there, continue following his branch and make sure the missile strike is prevented in X13 if you want Villedor to remain intact.
Accept Juan's offer in Welcome on Board.
Carry out Juan's plan for the transmitter during Broadcast.
Stay on Juan's route and stop the missiles in X13 by leaving Lawan to detonate the explosives.
Can Mia Be Saved?
There is no route in which Mia makes a lasting recovery. Aiden can bring her out of X13, and some versions of the finale change who helps during the escape, but her condition is already beyond saving. She dies only a few hours after being taken out of the facility.Choosing Lawan over the demolition plan does not create a secret Mia ending either. The city suffers the missile strike, and Hakon can affect how the escape plays out if he is alive, but Mia still dies. In practical terms, the player's final decisions determine Villedor's fate and the survival of Lawan and Hakon, not Mia's long-term outcome.
