Cheats and console commands in Valheim let us change character skills, teleport around the world, tame animals, spawn items and creatures, control weather, build without resources, and much more. The system has changed several times since Early Access, and Valheim 1.0 introduced achievements and a new cheat confirmation step. In this guide, I have collected the current console commands and explained how to enable them.

How to Open the Console in Valheim

On current versions of Valheim, the console can be enabled from the game settings on supported platforms. On PC, the old launch-option method also still works.

Steam

  • Open Valheim and go to Settings, then Gameplay. Enable the Enable Console option if it is available in your current build.
  • Alternatively, open Steam, right-click Valheim, select Properties, and find Launch Options under the General tab.
  • Add -console to the launch options.
  • Launch the game and press F5 while inside a world.

Microsoft Store and PC Game Pass

  • Open the Valheim installation folder. The default location is usually C:\XboxGames\Valheim\Content.
  • Create a shortcut for Valheim.exe.
  • Open the shortcut properties and add a space followed by -console to the end of the Target field.
  • Launch the game through that shortcut and press F5.

Xbox

Enable the console under Settings → Gameplay if necessary. Iron Gate's developer-mode documentation lists LB + LT + Start as the controller shortcut for opening the console. Current console builds can also use an expanded bumper and trigger combination depending on the platform version.Once the console is open, type:
devcommands
The old imacheater command is obsolete and has not been required for years. In Valheim 1.0, the first time we try to run an actual cheat after enabling developer commands, the game shows a warning. Type:
confirmcheats
This confirms that we understand the consequences and allows cheat commands to run.
Important for Valheim 1.0: most gameplay-changing developer commands can mark the current character as having used cheats and block achievements. Spawned items can also be marked as cheated. The harmless freefly camera command is one of the exceptions documented by Iron Gate.
A later Valheim 1.0 hotfix added an official opt-in command that allows achievements even after using devcommands or mods:
yesiuseddevcommandsbutiwantmyachievementsanyway
Iron Gate deliberately gave this command an absurdly long name. Enter it without spaces.

Valheim Cheat Commands

After entering devcommands and confirming cheats when required, we can use the commands below.

  • model [0/1] - switches between the two character body types.
  • hair [name] - changes the hairstyle.

Items, Building, and Creative Commands

  • spawn [name] [amount] [level] - spawns an item, creature, or prefab using its internal ID. Example: spawn Wood 50.

  • inventoryclean - drops items that no longer fit inside the current inventory grid.
  • location [name] [SAVE] - spawns a location in front of the player. Always be careful with this command. Adding SAVE prevents the location command from disabling normal world saving until a restart.

Creatures and Combat Cheats

  • killall - kills nearby creatures, including tamed animals, so use it carefully.
  • killenemies - kills nearby untamed creatures and enemies while leaving tamed animals alive.
  • killtame - kills nearby tamed creatures.

World Commands

  • setkey [key] [value] - adds or changes a global world key.
  • removekey [key] - removes a global key.

Achievement and Statistics Commands in Valheim 1.0

  • yesiuseddevcommandsbutiwantmyachievementsanyway - opts the current character back into achievement eligibility after using devcommands or mods. This command was officially added after the 1.0 release.

How to Spawn Items in Valheim

One of the most useful console commands is spawn. The basic format is:
  • spawn [internal name] [amount] [level]
For example:
  • spawn Wood 50
  • spawn Iron 30
  • spawn Coins 100
Internal prefab names do not always match the name shown in the inventory, so use the help command, Tab autocomplete, or a current item-ID list if a spawn command does not work.
In Valheim 1.0, items created with spawn can be marked as cheated. Picking up such an item can temporarily affect achievement eligibility for another character as well.

How to Enable Creative Mode in Valheim

Valheim still has the old debug mode that effectively works as a creative mode. We no longer need the obsolete imacheater command. To activate it:
  • Open the console with F5.
  • Enter devcommands.
  • Enter confirmcheats if the game asks us to confirm cheat usage.
  • Enter debugmode.
After that, the main keyboard shortcuts are:
  1. B - toggles free building and crafting without resource costs.
  2. Z - toggles character flight.
  3. K - kills nearby untamed creatures.
  4. L - removes nearby dropped items.
We can also use nocost and fly directly from the console instead of relying on the debugmode hotkeys.

Do Valheim Cheats Work on Dedicated Servers?

Not in the same way as in a local world. Commands such as god, spawn, and debugmode are developer cheats and normally run only on the machine hosting the world. A player connected to a vanilla dedicated server cannot simply enable them locally.Server administrators still have access to normal moderation commands such as kick, ban, unban, banned, and save. The server owner manages administrator permissions through adminlist.txt.
