Co-op shooters are having a strong year in 2026. Long-running favorites keep attracting squads, several live-service games have received major updates, and newer releases are competing for the same evenings with friends. Below are the best co-op shooters worth playing in 2026.

Deep Rock Galactic

Release date: May 13, 2020Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|SSubgenre: first-person shooter, procedural caves
Space dwarves mining minerals on the most dangerous planet in the galaxy have become a co-op classic for good reason. Deep Rock Galactic is built around four classes, Engineer, Driller, Scout, and Gunner, and each one solves a different problem. Engineer builds platforms, Scout lights enormous caverns and reaches distant resources, Driller creates tunnels through almost anything, and Gunner keeps swarms away from the team. The fully destructible terrain and procedural cave generation still make every mission feel slightly different.
In 2026, Deep Rock Galactic remains one of the easiest co-op shooters to recommend because sessions are compact, teamwork feels natural, and failure is usually funny rather than exhausting. It also has a famously welcoming community built around one simple greeting: "Rock and Stone!" If you have around 45 minutes and a few friends, it is still difficult to beat.

Back 4 Blood

Release date: October 12, 2021Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|SSubgenre: first-person co-op shooter
Back 4 Blood is Turtle Rock Studios' spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead. It supports up to four players, features eight Cleaners with different bonuses, and uses a card system that changes character builds and mission conditions. The final version includes the three major expansions Tunnels of Terror, Children of the Worm, and River of Blood.
There is one important caveat in 2026: active development ended in 2023. Turtle Rock moved on to its next project and Back 4 Blood no longer receives new content or balance patches. The servers remain online and the game is still fully playable, while recent English Steam reviews sit in the Mostly Positive range. Its best feature remains the deck system, which lets you build around healing, reload speed, melee combat, ammunition support, or other squad roles before the mission begins.

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide

Release date: November 30, 2022Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|SSubgenre: first-person co-op action
Fatshark has changed Darktide dramatically since launch, and 2026 has been especially busy. The free Beyond the Hive update introduced Expeditions, sending strike teams outside Hive Tertium into the open wastelands of Atoma Prime for the first time. In June, the paid Skitarii class joined the roster, while the October Depths of the Damned update added a new story mini-campaign and another mission beneath Tertium.
The melee combat remains the main reason to play. Darktide combines firearms with the parries, dodges, heavy attacks, blocks, and close-range crowd control that made Vermintide work. Its class roster has expanded far beyond the original four, and the talent systems now support much more specialized builds. If your group wants a shooter where a chainsword, power weapon, or shovel can matter as much as a rifle, Darktide is one of the strongest choices.

Payday 3

Release date: September 21, 2023Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|SSubgenre: first-person co-op heist shooter
Payday 3 had a rough launch, but Starbreeze has spent the following years rebuilding large parts of it. In 2026 the game received reworked heists, movement improvements, new stealth interactions, Crimebonds, new contracts, and an Unreal Engine 5 upgrade. The third-anniversary update also brought a rewritten Campaign Mode, Weapon Perks, a Shooting Range, and additional enemy improvements. All paid heists were folded into the base game in September, making the current package much easier to understand than the original DLC structure.
The core appeal has not changed. Four players enter a location with a plan and decide whether to keep things quiet or let the robbery collapse into a full gunfight. One player watches cameras, another handles locks and objectives, someone controls civilians, and someone else covers the escape route. Payday is at its best when the perfect stealth plan fails in thirty seconds and the squad somehow improvises its way out with the money.

Ready or Not

Release date: December 13, 2023Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|SSubgenre: tactical first-person shooter, SWAT simulator
Ready or Not is the most methodical and stressful co-op shooter on this list. You play as SWAT officers in the fictional city of Los Sueños, clearing buildings, rescuing hostages, disarming threats, collecting evidence, and arresting suspects when possible. The game supports up to five players in co-op and now offers crossplay across its supported platforms.
Gunfights are deliberately dangerous. A mistake in a doorway can end a run almost immediately, civilians may panic in unexpected ways, and suspects can surrender instead of forcing a firefight. Much of the appeal comes from the procedures around shooting: door wedges, breaching tools, flashbangs, ballistic shields, mirrors, room clearing, and constant communication. It is an excellent choice for a squad that enjoys planning more than rushing.

Helldivers 2

Release date: February 8, 2024Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|SSubgenre: third-person co-op live-service shooter
Helldivers 2 remains one of the flagship co-op shooters of the current generation. Four players drop onto hostile planets, complete military objectives, gather resources, fight Terminids, Automatons, or Illuminate forces, and then try to survive extraction. The 2026 Devoid of Liberty update pushed the war deeper into Illuminate territory and introduced new missions and mutated enemies, while new Warbonds continue to expand the arsenal.
The defining feature is friendly fire, which is always active and frequently hilarious. Stratagems let players call down support weapons, turrets, orbital attacks, airstrikes, vehicles, and other battlefield tools through input combinations. The game is now available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, making it much easier to assemble a mixed-platform squad than it was at launch.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2

Release date: September 9, 2024Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|SSubgenre: third-person co-op action shooter
Saber Interactive is still supporting Space Marine 2 deep into its third year. Anniversary Update II arrived on October 1, 2026 and added Chaos Siege, a PvE spin-off that lets players control Chaos Space Marines against Tyranids, Cadians, and loyalist Space Marines. The same update introduced the Crucible System, where players voluntarily add Penances and negative modifiers in exchange for additional progression and rewards.
The main co-op structure remains built around three-player squads in Operations, while the campaign also supports co-op. Space Marine 2 works because its melee and ranged systems are designed to flow into each other. A bolt rifle softens a swarm, a chainsword finishes the front line, and executions restore momentum before the next wave arrives. If your group wants something heavier and more cinematic than Darktide, this is the obvious alternative.

Mycopunk

Early Access release: July 10, 2025Platforms: PCSubgenre: first-person looter shooter, fungal sci-fi
Mycopunk is a four-player mission-based looter shooter in which a crew of rusty robots fights a spreading fungal infection. The style mixes strange sci-fi, bio-horror, absurd comedy, and very fast movement. Players bounce through vertical levels, collect weapons and upgrades, and build increasingly ridiculous combinations out of hundreds of handcrafted modifiers.
After missions, the team returns to an orbital ship to regroup and prepare for the next deployment. The project is still in Early Access as of October 9, 2026, with version 1.0 currently scheduled for October 20. It is much smaller than most games on this list, but that is part of the charm. With friends, it feels like a surprisingly warm and chaotic co-op looter shooter hiding inside one of the strangest settings of the year.

Borderlands 4

Release date: September 12, 2025Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2Subgenre: first-person looter shooter
Borderlands 4 brought the series to the planet Kairos with four new Vault Hunters: Vex, Rafa, Amon, and Harlowe. The familiar loop remains intact, with absurd quantities of randomized weapons, skill-tree experimentation, boss farming, and a constant stream of loot. New traversal systems such as gliding, dodging, and fixed-point grappling make the combat spaces more mobile than in the earlier games.
Online co-op supports up to four players across supported platforms, with crossplay and individual loot. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S also support two-player split-screen. Borderlands 4 is one of the safest recommendations here if your group primarily wants to shoot things, compare increasingly ridiculous guns, and keep building characters without the punishment of an extraction economy.

John Carpenter's Toxic Commando

Release date: March 12, 2026Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|SSubgenre: first-person co-op horde shooter
Saber Interactive returned to massive zombie hordes with John Carpenter's Toxic Commando. The game leans into 1980s action-horror, bad jokes, enormous crowds of infected enemies, and four-player co-op. Squads move through large areas on foot and in vehicles, complete objectives, upgrade skills, and fight everything from ordinary undead to much larger bosses.
The Swarm Engine allows the screen to fill with huge numbers of enemies at once, which gives the game the same kind of controlled chaos that worked in World War Z. Vehicles are a major part of the fun because the squad can pile into one machine, drive across the map, and keep shooting on the move. It is not subtle, but that is exactly the point. If your group wants loud co-op without worrying about competitive players, Toxic Commando is an easy recommendation.

Deep Rock Galactic: Rogue Core

Early Access release: May 20, 2026Platforms: PCSubgenre: first-person co-op roguelite
Deep Rock Galactic: Rogue Core turns the original game's formula into a faster and more combat-focused roguelite. A run begins with limited equipment, then the team descends through procedurally generated stages, salvages weapons, collects Expenite, and builds temporary upgrade combinations as the danger escalates. Permanent progression between runs unlocks more Reclaimer Weapons, Phase Suits, and Suit Mods.
Early Access launched with five playable Reclaimers: Guardian, Falconer, Retcon, Spotter, and Slicer. Their roles are much more rigid than the original DRG classes. Guardian protects space and restores armor, Falconer fights with an aerial drone, Retcon can rewind to recover from dangerous situations, Spotter marks and weakens enemies while supporting ammunition, and Slicer specializes in aggressive melee combat. Runs usually last around 45 to 50 minutes, and the pressure increases the longer the squad spends chasing optional objectives.

Gears of War: E-Day

Release date: October 6, 2026Platforms: PC, Xbox Series X|S, Game PassSubgenre: third-person cover shooter
Gears of War: E-Day returns the series to the beginning of the Locust invasion, fourteen years before the original Gears of War. Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago are younger, the tone is darker and closer to horror, and the campaign can be played solo, in two-player split-screen on console, or with up to four players online.
The major co-op addition is Horde Siege, a 12-player evolution of Horde built around three squads operating on a large shared battlefield. Each four-player squad takes its own objectives while crossing paths with the others, collecting Energy, upgrading equipment, and working toward a final fight and extraction. At launch, the four classes are Assault, Breacher, Marksman, and Medic, each with a dedicated loadout, passive bonuses, progression, and Tactical Gear. The Coalition has also rebuilt movement, cover, and destruction in Unreal Engine 5 while trying to preserve the heavy feel associated with classic Gears. Horde Siege adds weapon mods, armor mods, class progression, larger maps, and changing mission objectives. For a group that wants cinematic third-person combat without giving up a serious cooperative mode, E-Day is one of the strongest new options of 2026.
