GTA 6 takes us back to Vice City, introduces Jason and Lucia, and opens up an entire state beyond the neon-lit streets. After years of waiting, there's been so much news about the game that it's easy to lose track. Here, we've gathered everything you need to know about Grand Theft Auto VI, including its release date and platforms, trailers, story, characters, Leonida map, gameplay changes, music, and editions.

When Is GTA 6 Coming Out, and on Which Platforms?

GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That's the date listed on Rockstar's website and in stores. Pre-loading begins on November 12, so you can download the game ahead of release instead of spending launch day watching a progress bar crawl across the screen. Unfortunately, it won't let you start the campaign a week early.

What does GTA 6 need to do better than GTA 5 to justify all these years of waiting?

When Is GTA 6 Coming to PC?

The PC situation is simpler than the rumors make it sound: Rockstar still hasn't announced a PC release date. Don't start marking early 2027 on your calendar just because you've seen it mentioned online. There are no official system requirements either. It's too early to buy a new graphics card specifically to meet GTA 6's supposed minimum specs, because there's nothing official to compare it against. We'd recommend waiting for a separate announcement if you plan to play on PC. A console launch doesn't automatically mean the game will appear on Steam, a subscription service, or a cloud gaming platform. Each would need its own availability details. At least buying a PS5 or Xbox for the November launch gives you a clear goal. Upgrading a PC for an unconfirmed set of requirements is still a gamble.

All GTA 6 Trailers: What to Watch and Why

The game now has four main videos. The first two introduce Leonida and its protagonists, the extended showcase explains what we'll actually be doing, and the launch trailer puts the couple's story back in the spotlight. If you're short on time, start with the extended look. It's a much better introduction to the game itself than trying to piece together its systems from a quick montage.

Trailer 1 - December 4, 2023

What sticks with you about the first trailer is how quickly Rockstar moves beyond the familiar postcard of palm trees and neon lights. We see beaches, swamps, car meets, and locals with plenty of material for their followers. It's a modern state where someone is bound to film any incident on their phone. Vice City still looks familiar, but the new game isn't planning to live on nostalgia for the 1980s.It's also our first introduction to Lucia, and our first glimpse of the criminal couple at work. Their story immediately centers on trust. Once trouble starts, you need to know who's going to stick around. Tom Petty's Love Is a Long Road plays over it all. The music, sunlit scenery, and people with questionable plans do a pretty good job of setting the mood for the new GTA.

Trailer 2 - May 6, 2025

The second trailer is worth watching for Jason and Lucia alone. Rockstar shows them reuniting after her release, spending time together, and getting back into the sort of business they really ought to avoid. Between the chases and gunfire, there are domestic moments and ordinary conversations. They make the protagonists feel like people who genuinely have something to lose.Their circle also gets much bigger, bringing in smugglers, musicians, club owners, and professional robbers. This whole crowd looks set to take the couple through very different sides of life in Leonida. The main song is Hot Together by The Pointer Sisters. The video itself was captured in-game on PS5, and Rockstar described it as roughly an even mix of gameplay and cutscenes. Think of it as an introduction to the story and setting, then move on to the next showcase for a closer look at how the game plays.

An Extended Look - August 27, 2026

An Extended Look runs for 26 minutes and 48 seconds and was captured entirely in-game on PS5. It premiered on Netflix before appearing on Rockstar's official website and YouTube. Here, we get a closer look at driving, shootouts, the protagonists' everyday lives, and things to do between missions. Unlike the short trailers, this showcase gives each scene enough time for us to understand what's actually happening. For example, a police chase shows both sides of the same escape. You can fire from the car, then take over the driving. Between the dangerous moments, the protagonists head home, choose what to eat, watch TV, and get ready to go out. Elsewhere, a streamer turns out to be hiding in the trunk of a stolen car. That's the GTA we know. You thought you were just taking a vehicle, and ended up with a passenger who has his own plans for the evening. We recommend this video to anyone more interested in how the game works than another gorgeous panorama. Watch how pedestrians react, how your partner behaves, and how free exploration differs from scripted missions. Those small scenes tell us a lot about the new installment. The size of the state alone tells us almost nothing about that.

Launch Trailer - October 15, 2026

The launch trailer brings the focus back to Jason and Lucia, their past, their relationship, and their attempts to escape the mess they're in. You can read more about its release in our GTA 6 launch trailer news. Where the extended look explains how the game works, this video reminds us whose story we're returning to Vice City for. The quick montage leaves plenty of room for speculation without revealing the course of the entire campaign. There's new music here, too: Flower in a Hurricane by Justice, featuring Tame Impala, SZA, and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. Justice also composed the game's original score. The song serves two purposes, accompanying the trailer and introducing GTA 6's musical direction. We'll come back to the soundtrack below.

What Is the GTA 6 Story About?

Jason and Lucia take on a job that's supposed to bring in easy money, but everything goes wrong. Afterward, different people are after them, and the pair find themselves caught in a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida. To get out, they need money and someone they can trust. They'll have to figure out the money part as they go. As for trust, each hopes to find it in the person beside them.
GTA 6
GTA 6
There's an obvious advantage to that setup: ordinary open-world activities have a place in the story. Robbing a store or finding a way to sell a stolen car isn't just about saving up for your next purchase. The protagonists are trying to earn their way out of their situation. In an interview with Famitsu, Rob Nelson explained that earning money outside story missions is tied to the plot's progression. So a trip across the state can be part of the bigger plan, even when you've temporarily wandered away from the next mission. The couple's relationship also depends on your actions. Jason and Lucia can remain romantically close or be partners in crime first and foremost, with their level of intimacy changing the interactions available. Without a close relationship, for example, they can't hold hands or kiss. Pursuing romance isn't mandatory, but you can work on rebuilding their relationship if you want to. Either way, they're still partners in crime. It's not so easy to walk away from the trouble they've landed in together.

Jason Duval

Jason Duval
Jason Duval
Jason wants a quiet, comfortable life, but he keeps choosing company that puts peace and quiet out of reach. He grew up around grifters and criminals, then tried to make a fresh start in the Army. After his service, he ended up in the Leonida Keys, working for local drug runners. Meeting Lucia promises to change things, although it's hard to say which way they'll go.Brian Heder helps him out with a place to live, letting Jason stay in one of his properties for free as long as he runs errands for him. It's a convenient arrangement, provided you don't ask too many questions about those errands. That connection immediately explains why Jason is so deeply involved in the islands' criminal world. Getting out of it takes more than deciding one day that things are going to be different.

Lucia Caminos

Lucia Caminos
Lucia Caminos
Lucia's father taught her how to fight when she was young, and life has given her plenty of reasons to put those lessons to use. Trying to help her family landed her in Leonida prison. Now she's out and determined to build the comfortable life her mother dreamed of back in Liberty City. But Lucia is done waiting for a lucky break. She already has a plan. She's every bit as important to the story as Jason, with her own past, personality, and ideas about where they should go next. The game lets you experience events through both protagonists, while their life together continues outside missions. That's what makes it especially interesting to see how often one person's plans line up with the other's wishes.

Who Else Will the Protagonists Meet?

GTA 6
GTA 6
Brian Heder represents the old smuggling days of Leonida. He has a boatyard, a third wife named Lori, and enough experience to leave the unpleasant parts of the business to other people. Jason's friend Cal Hampton is much happier at home with a beer, the internet, and Coast Guard radio chatter. While Jason is looking for a way up, Cal seems to have found a comfortable spot and has no intention of moving.Boobie Ike is a big name in Vice City. He turned street money into a business empire of real estate, a strip club, and a recording studio, and is now building Only Raw Records with Dre'Quan Priest. Their latest bet is the duo Real Dimez, made up of Bae-Luxe and Roxy. The friends have already had one musical breakthrough, endured a few difficult years, and are hoping to make it big again. For major heists, keep an eye on Raul Bautista. He knows how to put together a crew for a risky job, but he raises the stakes with every new score. For Jason and Lucia, knowing someone like him means access to big money and equally big trouble. Judging by the characters Rockstar has introduced so far, the couple won't be bored between music, smuggling, and bank robberies.

Do You Need to Play Vice City Before GTA 6?

GTA 6
GTA 6
You don't need to finish any of the older games to understand the new story. GTA 6 takes place in modern-day Vice City and the rest of Leonida, while GTA: Vice City was set in 1986. It's a new story, with a different time period and cast. The older game is worth playing for its own sake and to see the city's earlier incarnation, not as some mandatory opening chapter. There are still references, of course. In its description of the bonus Hawk & Little Morgan revolvers, Rockstar mentions the Vercetti Estate, a name longtime fans will recognize immediately. But an item's backstory doesn't mean Tommy is returning to the plot. Nelson also spoke to Famitsu about different versions of the world and the studio's fondness for looking back at older games. It's fun to spot familiar names, but there's no reason to turn them into a list of confirmed cameos just yet.

GTA 6 Map: Vice City and the Other Regions of Leonida

Leonida is a fictional state inspired by Florida. Vice City is a major part of it, but beyond the city are islands, swamps, industrial backwaters, and forests. Rockstar has introduced six main areas to explore. The differences between them matter more than simply comparing the map's size with GTA V. A drive from a beachfront hotel to a run-down motel should change more than the view from your window.

Vice City

This is where you'll find beaches, clubs, music, and people desperate to look successful. But even within the city, neighborhoods have their own personalities. Ocean Beach has pastel-colored hotels and white sand, Little Cuba has bustling bakeries, the Tisha-Wocka flea market sells knockoffs, and the port welcomes cruise ships. It's more interesting to think of Vice City as several different urban worlds sitting side by side than as one long neon-lit street.

Leonida Keys

The tropical islands look like the perfect place to put your worries aside and sit by the water. Jason has settled here, while Brian keeps his smuggling operation running. That means the docks and boats aren't just for fishing and scenic cruises. The story begins in the Keys, so our introduction to the state starts with island life before expanding into a much bigger web of problems.

Grassrivers

The swamps, mangroves, and alligators show us a completely different side of Leonida. City streets give way to water, vegetation, and airboats. Rockstar even hints that the alligators are far from the most dangerous things you'll find out here. For travelers, that's a good reason to leave the usual urban routes behind. For anyone planning to explore, it's a reminder to watch what might be hiding among the trees.

Port Gellhorn

People once came here on vacation. Now there are cheap motels, shuttered attractions, and empty shopping areas. Vice City's glamorous lifestyle gives way to people doing whatever they can to get by. The area's description has plenty of booze, painkillers, and gas-station energy drinks. That contrast tells you more about the state than another row of expensive cars. Prosperity hasn't reached everyone.

Ambrosia

Ambrosia runs on industry and old ways of doing things. The Allied Crystal sugar refinery provides jobs, while the local biker gang handles just about everything else. There are fewer postcard-perfect resorts here and more people who don't spend their days lounging by a pool. For a story about money and criminal connections, this part of Leonida makes just as much sense as a nightclub.

Mount Kalaga National Park

GTA 6
GTA 6
The northern part of the state is home to forests, hunting and fishing spots, and off-road trails. A trip here lets you escape the bustle of the city, although getting away from strange people isn't quite so easy. Rockstar has populated the surrounding countryside with mystics and radicals who prefer to keep their distance from the authorities. A quiet drive through the woods fits the game's overall mood perfectly. Trouble doesn't have to wait for you at a mission marker.A complete official map showing every mission and secret hasn't been released yet. Fan reconstructions can help us imagine how the regions connect, but we'll still have to explore the state for ourselves. Nelson explained that unexplored areas of the map will remain hidden until you visit them. We'll be uncovering Leonida gradually rather than getting an atlas with all the answers on day one.

What's Changed in GTA 6 Gameplay?

The most interesting changes involve things we've been doing in GTA for years. You can still steal a car, pull out a gun on the street, or disappear after a robbery, but there are more factors to think about with each decision. The game takes into account who saw you, what the police know, and how you normally behave. Here's what you should know before falling back into your old habits.

Switching Between Jason and Lucia

GTA 6
GTA 6
During free exploration, you can bring the protagonists together or let them go about their own business. While you're controlling one, the other carries on with their own routine. On the road, you can hand over the driving to your partner, switch to the passenger seat, and spend the ride on your phone or firing a weapon. This is more than swapping one character model for another. It's a different way to take part in the same situation.Missions depend on how each scene is designed. Some allow free switching, others hand control over automatically, and certain sequences are tied to a specific protagonist. So don't expect to play every mission entirely as Jason or entirely as Lucia. Rockstar uses both characters to show the side of the action that matters, while giving players more freedom between those moments.

Wanted System and Criminal Profile

The police respond to what they know about a crime. Witnesses, clothing, appearance, and vehicles all matter. If your car is already on their watch list, calmly driving around in it probably isn't a great plan. Changing your car or clothes can alter the description they're working with, although the exact outcome depends on what your pursuers have learned. The Heat system is tied to that information and the search for your character, so getting away from a chase doesn't always mean you're completely safe. There's also a separate criminal profile that evaluates how you usually operate. A careful robber and someone who opens fire at the slightest provocation get different reactions from the world. Nelson compared the general idea to the honor system in Red Dead Redemption 2, but without directly carrying over its rules or discounts for good behavior. What matters here is the kind of criminal you become. The more aggressively you act, the more aggression you may face in return.

You Can't Carry Your Entire Arsenal in Your Pocket Anymore

GTA 6
GTA 6
You can carry two concealed handguns and two long guns. You can't sling both long guns over your back at once, though. One has to stay in your hands. Spare equipment is stored in your vehicle or in Ammu-Nation gun lockers. That makes your car useful as a place to prepare for the next shootout, too.People can tell the difference between a gun slung over your shoulder and one you're ready to fire. In the latter case, they become wary and move away, while some residents may respond by drawing weapons of their own. There's now a meaningful difference between bringing a rifle for a job and walking through a crowd with it in your hands. We've collected the confirmed models and details of weapon storage in our GTA 6 weapons guide. Where you once could pull any gun from an enormous arsenal in the middle of the street, now you'll need to think about your loadout before leaving the car.

Stealing an Expensive Car Takes Preparation

You can assess a vehicle before stealing it, and how you get inside depends on its security. An older model might only need a lock-picking tool, while an expensive modern car will require a key-cloning device. Besides the alarm, there's also the problem of a tracker. You may have driven away, but the car is still telling the police where it is. Getting the door open doesn't mean you've pulled off a successful theft.Later, you'll have ways to deal with more advanced security and sell those vehicles. A car's condition also affects how much you earn. That creates a straightforward sequence: choose a target, overcome its protection, drive it away, and deliver it to the buyer in decent condition. You might still make it across half the city with your hood doing most of the work, but don't expect a great price afterward.

Food, Exercise, and Your Phone Are Part of Everyday Life

Jason and Lucia can gain weight, change their fitness levels, and work out at the gym. Exercise takes the form of minigames, while food provides temporary buffs. Training can also improve basic health and stamina stats. So a trip to the gym isn't just about changing how a character looks. Their lifestyle affects what they can do, too.Your phone is now a physical item the character holds, with apps for everything from banking and fitness to having a personal vehicle delivered. You can read other people's posts and send photos to your partner. The protagonists can't post their own pictures on social media because they're on the run. It's a nice touch given their situation. They can watch everyone else's madness all they want, but drawing the entire state's attention to themselves is probably a bad idea.

Things to Do Between Story Missions

The extended showcase includes basketball, workouts, racing, diving, skydiving, jet skis, and kayaking. Rockstar's description of Mount Kalaga National Park also mentions hunting and fishing. So a drive across Leonida could end somewhere completely different from where you planned to go. It's a familiar pleasure in GTA: spotting something interesting along the way and deciding that an important conversation can wait a little longer.
GTA 6
GTA 6
If you're looking to make money, your options aren't limited to story missions either. In an interview, a developer discussed car thefts, store robberies, jewelry stores and small banks, and raids on criminal gangs. Some of these jobs can be done together. Chance encounters also have their own personality. Someone you notice by the roadside might turn out to be a little story of their own, rather than background scenery on the way to the next shootout.Rockstar has also gone beyond the usual selection of wildlife by the roadside. Leonida will feature more than 170 species, including alligators, flamingos, manatees, pelicans, iguanas, and rhesus macaques. The last of those only sounds surprising until you remember that the real Florida is quite capable of springing surprises. Some animals can be tracked. That gives the world another reason to keep you outside the city, even on a day when you aren't planning to earn any money.

GTA 6 Music: Justice, Radio Stations, and a Separate Album

Music has several different jobs to do here. Justice composed the game's original score, radio stations fill our drives with songs and conversation, and Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album releases separately on November 19 with 34 original tracks. Don't confuse the album with the complete list of songs you'll hear on the radio. They're different parts of the soundtrack. You can already listen to previews of six stations on the official website:
  • Cocoteo FM - Modern Latin music.
  • Back Country Radio - Country music.
  • AfroBank FM - Amapiano, African classics, and other styles.
  • The Chamber - Metal.
  • Flash FM - Pop music.
  • Dirty South Classics - Southern rap and hip-hop.
That's just the portion of the airwaves Rockstar has revealed so far. The studio is also preparing talk shows and podcasts, so that familiar urge to sit in a parked car until an interesting segment ends is sure to return. For a first taste, we'd recommend listening to the station previews. They're an easier way to pick the mood for your future drives than a list of genres alone. It's especially nice to see Flash FM. The new Vice City has a musical link to our memories of the old one.

How Much Does GTA 6 Cost, and What's in Each Edition?

In the US PlayStation Store, Standard Edition costs $79.99 and Ultimate Edition costs $99.99. Prices vary by region. Standard includes the game, while Ultimate adds vehicles, weapon variants, clothing, special businesses, and extra activities. Choose based on whether you want those bonuses, not because you're afraid the regular edition won't let you finish the main story.
GTA 6
GTA 6
Ultimate includes the '95 Grotti Cheetah, Hawk & Little Morgan revolvers, personalized pistols for the protagonists, the Shitzu Squalo boat, and the '67 Vapid Dominator Buggy. The extra activities include a raid on a gang's base and a search for classic cars for collector Wyman. The bonuses are woven into the campaign. For example, the Cheetah is described as a vehicle for later events. You won't receive the whole package in one enormous delivery the moment the game begins. There's a separate Ultimate Edition Upgrade for Standard owners. So you don't have to pay extra in advance just because you're worried about missing your chance to upgrade. Decide whether you actually want those cars, cosmetic options, and additional activities. The game itself is enough to experience Jason and Lucia's story.Pre-orders come with the Vintage Vice City Pack, including a '55 Vapid Stanier sedan and a garage near Ocean Beach, outfits and hairstyles for both protagonists, and a weapon pattern. Digital orders also include one month of GTA+. Once the free period ends, the subscription renews at a charge unless you cancel. Check your store's terms before activating it, especially if that single month is all you want.

What's Inside the Box?

The physical edition of GTA 6 contains a download code, not a disc. Rockstar says so explicitly in its store. If you collect physical editions or want to lend the game to a friend later, bear that in mind before buying. A single-use code works differently from a disc. The upside is that once you've redeemed it, you can use the November 12 pre-load.The collector's package of physical memorabilia is sold separately and doesn't include the game. Think of the code-in-box edition, the in-game Ultimate Edition, and the box of collectibles as three different products. A fancy name on a collector's set doesn't mean there's a GTA 6 license inside. Check exactly what comes with the product you're buying.

Language Options, Graphics, and PS5 Pro

The Rockstar Store lists supported languages for GTA 6. However, the language list alone doesn't provide separate confirmation of voice acting in every listed language. Check the language details for your regional edition before buying. That's especially important with a download code, since discovering an unsuitable version after redemption would be frustrating. The PlayStation Store also displays a PS5 Pro Enhanced label. That confirms support for PS5 Pro features, but doesn't specify the exact frame rate in every mode. The extended showcase was captured in-game on PS5. We'll need the release version to assess how consistently the game runs on different consoles. It's also worth checking the final install size and day-one update closer to the pre-load. A figure from a random store listing doesn't necessarily match how much space the game will take on your console.

Will GTA 6 Have Co-op, and When Is Online Coming?

GTA 6 is announced as a single-player game. Jason and Lucia can work together, but that doesn't mean a two-player campaign. You control one protagonist while the game handles the other. So there's no reason to buy two copies expecting to play through the story together. Rockstar hasn't announced that kind of mode.Rockstar hasn't announced a schedule for the new online mode either. Character transfers from GTA Online, cross-platform play, and how online progression will work are also unconfirmed. If you're mainly waiting to play with friends, the November release date currently applies to the single-player GTA 6. Talk of a possible multiplayer launch in 2027 remains speculation until the studio makes a separate announcement. You can follow those updates in our GTA 6 section on NowGame.
